“Angelica, what’s the current situation in Aoma Village?” She had already picked up a few details from the conversation between the two young guards earlier. But without knowing the specifics, she wasn’t sure how to proceed.
Angelica politely handed Yaeger a glass of water and began to explain, “It’s very serious. Right now, more than three hundred villagers are quarantined inside the church. The worst part is that many of the clergymen have been infected too. There’s no one left inside to care for the sick. If things get worse, a mass casualty event is likely.”
Yaeger took the glass, sipped briefly, then set it down and fixed her gaze on Angelica. “It’s definitely a serious situation. What’s the local Lord planning to do about it?”
Despite her words, Yaeger didn’t find the situation particularly alarming. After curing both Angelica and her father, she had already grasped the full nature of the virus—and she could deal with it easily. As long as no one had died yet, it wasn’t truly a crisis in her eyes.
“His Excellency sent some doctors a few days ago, but they were all infected. Since then, no new doctors have come. We were simply told the village was under quarantine. From what I’ve heard, other nearby villages have taken similar measures,” Angelica said calmly.
Now that she knew Yaeger could solve the problem, the tension in her heart had completely faded. She was visibly calmer.
‘This Lord must be one of Alicia’s subordinates. He’s competent. The [Starfall Disease] is far more resilient than any normal illness. Traditional medicine won’t work on it. But ordering a quarantine so quickly and limiting the spread to one area—that was the right move.'
Yaeger gave silent praise to the Lord she had yet to meet. If anyone had been allowed to leave the docks, the virus could have spread across the entire kingdom. The outcome would’ve been catastrophic.
“The virus doesn’t spread quickly,” Yaeger said softly, “but it will still infect a lot of people over time.”No one could predict whether it would mutate. After all, even a virus seeks survival. The end goal of any virus is to reach symbiosis with its host. A virus that kills its host is ultimately a failure in evolutionary terms.
‘No… this virus wasn’t natural. It was created by those apostles to trigger the event…' Recalling the devastation it once caused, Yaeger discarded her earlier theory completely.
There was no chance of symbiosis. This virus was engineered to kill—everything.
‘Eliminating the virus isn’t hard. The real problem is that I can’t be seen in public.' Yaeger gently tapped her lips with a finger, deep in thought.
As a fugitive of the Empire, revealing her identity was out of the question. There was no way the villagers would trust a masked stranger to treat them, no matter her intentions.
She slowly turned her head toward Angelica. In the past, this beautiful village maiden might have been someone of great influence. Even if she didn’t command everyone's respect, her word would’ve been enough to earn the villagers’ trust. But now, Angelica was seen as the source of the plague—the village scapegoat.
In truth, even if Angelica hadn’t jumped in to save him that day, those sailors would have done it anyway.
“Princess, do you intend to help the villagers?” Angelica asked quietly.
“Do you want me to?” Yaeger responded gently.
After everything she’d been through, Yaeger would’ve understood if Angelica no longer wished to help them. But Angelica quickly shook her head. “It’s not that, Princess. I truly hope you’ll save them.”
“You don’t hate them?” Yaeger asked instead of giving a direct answer. She wanted to know how Angelica truly felt.
“I do,” Angelica admitted with a nod. “But not enough to just stand by and watch them die.”
“Good. That’s honest of you,” Yaeger said, gently patting her head.
She was a kind soul—one worthy of kindness in return.
“Once this is over, I’ll reward you,” Yaeger added, though she didn’t say what the reward would be.
Angelica didn’t ask. She was too overwhelmed with happiness to think clearly.
At first, Angelica had seen Yaeger as something terrifying, someone to avoid. But ever since the reservoir incident, that fear had slowly transformed into admiration.
Ding! Angelica’s Favorability toward you has increased by 10,000 points. Your relationship status is now…
Ding! …
Yaeger blinked, amused, as the notification kept chiming over and over. Lately, it felt a little too easy to earn Favorability points. But after thinking about it, she realized it made sense.
‘Well, except for Rosalina—that pervert. Everyone else’s Favorability seems perfectly reasonable.'
Whether it was Layna the pharmacist, Princess Kastina, Allie, or Aurora… She had done something significant for each of them.
‘And my Charm stat is maxed out. It’s only natural that people warm up to me this quickly.' With that thought, Yaeger let it go. There was no need to overthink something that only benefited her.
The system alert finally stopped once their relationship status reached ‘Intimate.’
“Angelica, do you know any way to quickly earn the villagers’ trust?” Yaeger asked.
After a moment of thought, Angelica slowly shook her head. “It’s difficult. And with how serious the plague is, gaining their trust will be even harder.”
“I see,” Yaeger replied, not at all surprised.
“But…” Angelica hesitated. “There might be one way.”
“What is it?” Yaeger leaned in, her face drawing close to Angelica’s.
“Wah!” Angelica flinched and leaned back in alarm.
“Sorry, I got a little carried away,” Yaeger said, quickly sitting upright again.
“No, it’s fine!” Angelica responded quickly, cheeks flushed as she straightened up.
“Go on, tell me your idea,” Yaeger encouraged. She couldn’t afford to linger at the docks. This problem had to be solved quickly.
Angelica took a deep breath, gathered herself, and said slowly, “Princess, I think the church is the best place to start.”
As soon as she said it, Yaeger felt a spark of inspiration. “Of course! That clears everything up. Why didn’t I think of it sooner? The people here trust the Church of Light almost as much as the Empire itself.”
In just a moment, she had a solid plan.
“Angelica, we’re going to the church—now!” With that, the two of them moved to set out.
Jade City’s martial law had finally been lifted. Players swarmed out of the gates in celebration, like prisoners tasting freedom for the first time.
“Half of you, track down the Black-hearted Princess. The rest, level up around the outskirts. We’ll pressure her from both fronts!”
Inside the Adventurers’ Guild, Taurus delivered a rousing speech to his core team. Beside him, S.K.Y. quickly typed up the speech to distribute it across the entire guild. But no one noticed that his pupils were growing slightly redder.
