Reborn as a Tough Army Wife
Chapter 141 - 136: Quitting (Third Update)

Chapter 141: Chapter 136: Quitting (Third Update)

She followed the young soldier to the entrance of the military base and from a distance saw Luo Zhiming standing there with a large backpack on his back.

As soon as he saw Fang Pingying, Luo Zhiming waved his hand, "Sister-in-law, I’m here."

Fang Pingying slightly frowned and nodded at him.

As soon as she approached, Luo Zhiming started to complain, "What’s wrong with Big Brother’s unit? I told them I’m Camp Chief Luo’s brother, but they just wouldn’t believe me and strictly refused to let me in, insisting on calling you out. Do they really think I would impersonate someone?"

Fang Pingying glanced at the young soldier guarding the gate, pulled Luo Zhiming aside, and said in a low voice,

"It’s the military’s regulation. No matter who it is, they must show proof and verify their identity. You can’t just say you’re the Battalion Commander’s brother and expect them to believe you. What if some criminals tried to infiltrate the base pretending to be someone else? It would throw the base into chaos."

Luo Zhiming pursed his lips and said no more after hearing this.

After a short wait, he asked again, "Where’s my Big Brother?"

"Your brother is at work." Fang Pingying looked at the bag behind him and found it a bit odd. If he had left his job, what about all the stuff he had brought initially? Why was there only one bag left? She asked uncertainly, "What’s up? Did you come today because you have something to discuss with your Big Brother?"

Luo Zhiming hemmed and hawed, feeling somewhat embarrassed to tell Fang Pingying, then asked again, "Can you get someone to call out Big Brother? I have something to discuss with him."

"Can’t you just tell me instead? Your brother can’t leave work just like that." Fang Pingying gave him a look and directly asked, "Besides, are you on leave today? Isn’t the construction site operating?"

As soon as Luo Zhiming heard ’construction site,’ his face darkened and then he said, "I quit working there. I came here today to stay for a few days and have Big Brother find me another job."

"You quit?" Fang Pingying raised her voice when she heard he really quit, and seeing that the guard kept watching them, she pulled Luo Zhiming aside again, continuing, "Why did you quit? Is the work too hard, or what’s the issue?"

As soon as Luo Zhiming heard this, he started complaining non-stop, "And to think my brother said the job was easy – I think it’s even harder than plowing fields back in the countryside."

"You have to work a full twelve hours, from eight in the morning until eight at night just standing there, you can’t even move around, only two days off per month, staying there every day is like being in prison, right?"

"Just because of this, you quit?" Fang Pingying asked, somewhat incredulously.

To Fang Pingying, such work didn’t seem like a big deal at all, and they had even discussed it thoroughly at home.

If you’re getting paid so well for a month, how can it be that you just do whatever you feel like every day?

Luo Zhiming, sensing the tone of Fang Pingying’s voice, said impatiently, "Sister-in-law, you’ve never worked outside, you don’t know how tough it is. If you don’t believe me, try standing there for twelve hours a day, not being allowed to roam around, and see how many days you can last."

"As long as there’s money to be earned, I wouldn’t mind working twelve or even sixteen hours," Fang Pingying retorted with a glance, her tone annoyed, "Moreover, you just said that they only asked you to stay put, not to carry bricks or do laborious work for twelve hours a day. How can you not handle that?"

Zhiming curled his lips and replied in a low voice, "Saying I shouldn’t do manual labor like hauling bricks, sometimes I have to."

Fang Pingying knew it was pointless to try to make it clear to him and didn’t bother to argue, so she asked, "So what do you plan to do now, go back home?"

Upon hearing this, Luo Zhiyong immediately shared his plan, "Go back home? I’m thinking of staying at your place for a few days first. Let Big Brother find me another job. Didn’t you mention there was work guarding the warehouse before? I think guarding the warehouse is better, at least I won’t have to do manual labor, and I’m willing to do that."

Seeing Zhiming’s demeanor, what Fang Pingying really wanted to say was that he probably wouldn’t be able to do anything, since guarding the warehouse still meant standing guard for twelve hours a day. Did he actually think there was such a thing as receiving money without working?

Seeing Zhiming like this, Fang Pingying didn’t want to bring him back to her place.

Because she knew that if Luo Zhiming knew they had a place for him to stay, he would run to them whenever he didn’t feel like working, and they surely wouldn’t have any peaceful days to live.

So, Fang Pingying didn’t immediately take Luo Zhiming back to her place, still considering whether to find him a hostel to stay in for the time being. She would rather spend some money now than deal with the troubles later.

But just then, Luo Zhiyong and Huang Lin happened to return from their office work outside.

Seeing Fang Pingying and her company, Luo Zhiyong was visibly surprised.

Especially when he saw Zhiming carrying his belongings, Zhiyong immediately called out to him, "Luo Zhiming, what’s going on here?"

"Big Brother..." Just a moment ago, Zhiming kept asking where his big brother was, but now seeing Luo Zhiyong, he became timid and hesitantly stuttered without being able to form a complete sentence.

Fang Pingying finished the sentence for him, "He says the construction site is too tough, having to stand for twelve hours a day, and he says he’s done with it."

Upon hearing this, Luo Zhiyong’s face darkened and he furrowed his brow tightly as he stared at Zhiming, "Luo Zhiming, what do you want?"

Zhiming didn’t dare look at Zhiyong, but he couldn’t just stay silent forever, so he nervously spoke in a low voice, "Big Brother, the work on the construction site is really too hard. Besides having to get up early and finish late every day, we only get two days off a month. Even when I asked for time off, the boss wouldn’t allow it and kept nagging, saying if I like working there I should stay, otherwise just leave. The way he said it, it’s like who would even fancy doing that job."

Hearing this, Luo Zhiyong was completely infuriated and couldn’t help but yell, "Luo Zhiming, right now you should fancy that job because what else do you think you’re doing in the city? You think you’re here to enjoy life?"

"On the other side, just guarding stuff every day, and you’re paid 35 dollars a month. What more do you want? Think about how much you could earn in a month working the fields at home."

"It’s not just about casually guarding stuff. I even have to help move bricks," Zhiming said cautiously, not daring to talk back, only murmuring softly.

"Those in charge of materials have to help move bricks?" Huang Lin asked in disbelief.

He had seen the working conditions at his uncle’s construction site and knew that, normally, those in charge of materials wouldn’t have to move bricks. At most, they might help unload some items during idle times, and it wouldn’t be particularly heavy work.

But before Zhiming could respond, Zhiyong, furious, yelled at him again, "Even if they asked you to move bricks, if you can do it, just help out a bit, what’s the big deal? It’s not like that tiny bit of work is going to kill you."

Seeing the veins in Zhiyong’s forehead bulging out from anger, Fang Pingying quickly pulled him aside and spoke softly, "Take it easy when you talk. We are in the military, don’t cause a bad impression."
