Chapter 614: Chapter 613 Disagreements
Lin Aijia and her son returned home with groceries to find Lin Xia had already come out of the bedroom and was sitting in the living room.
Upon seeing Lin Xia, both Lin Aijia and her son showed their enthusiasm.
"Lin Xia’s here! Have you been here for a long time?"
"Brother Hongli! Aunt! I’ve been here for quite a while!"
"Well, have a seat then!" Yu Hongli greeted Lin Xia cheerfully and then headed into the kitchen with the groceries.
"Lin Xia! Did you just get back? I even went to your place the other day to give you a heads-up, but no one was home!" Lin Aijia seemed a bit too excited, her voice quite loud.
Lin Xia’s eyes narrowed slightly, and she couldn’t help but whisper a reminder, "Aunt! The baby’s about to sleep after feeding, could you lower your voice?"
Lin Aijia waved her hand dismissively, "Ah! It’s okay! My sweet grandson doesn’t mind the noise! Lin Xia! You’ve seen the baby, haven’t you?"
Lin Xia chuckled softly, "Yes! I’ve seen him! He’s so good-looking and chubby too!"
Lin Aijia grinned widely, "Right? He looks just like Hongli did as a baby, as if he was cast from the same mold! Absolutely adorable!"
Lin Xia smiled faintly as she listened to Lin Aijia excitedly chatter away, secretly amused to herself. She had stared at the newborn for a long while earlier and couldn’t figure out whether he resembled Luo Yue or Yu Hongli.
But here, her aunt confidently insisted he looked like Yu Hongli.
Seeing that they had started chatting, Luo Xinyan got up and also went into the kitchen.
Lin Aijia hadn’t spoken two sentences before she was itching to see the baby again. She walked briskly to the door of the southern bedroom and cracked it open slightly.
Upon seeing Luo Yue holding the baby upright and gently patting his back, she opened the door fully.
"Look, the baby isn’t asleep yet! Lin Xia! Come back in and take another look!"
With Lin Aijia eagerly inviting her, Lin Xia stood up, somewhat awkwardly, and followed her into the bedroom.
Luo Yue’s expression was neutral, showing neither happiness nor anger.
Yet Lin Xia still sensitively picked up on her displeasure.
Lin Aijia either did it on purpose or didn’t notice, "Luo Yue, let me hold the baby! You take a break!"
Luo Yue didn’t move, "Mom, the baby is almost asleep. Wait until he wakes up before you hold him!"
Lin Aijia was slightly put out, "But he isn’t asleep yet, is he? I’ll just rock him a bit, and he’ll sleep soundly in no time. That’s how I soothed you and Hongli when you were little!"
Luo Yue’s brows furrowed and she couldn’t hold back any longer, "Mom, did you wash your hands after coming in from outside?"
"Nope!" Lin Aijia’s face grew even darker, "I didn’t touch anything filthy outside, what’s there to worry about? Besides, I’m his grandmother, he wouldn’t despise me!"
Lin Xia massaged her temples, never having expected her aunt to adopt such an attitude after becoming a grandmother.
"Aunt! Don’t hold him just yet! The baby is so little and has such weak immunity, not like us adults. There are so many germs outside, don’t get the baby sick!"
Luo Yue looked at Lin Xia gratefully. Indeed, that was what she was thinking.
But if they pressed on, her mother-in-law certainly wouldn’t be pleased, and it might even lead to resentment and a rift between them.
Yet for her child’s health, she couldn’t let her be so unhygienic.
Lin Aijia, feeling a bit sheepish, lowered her hands, "Fine! I’ll wash my hands thoroughly before holding him!"
She knew her daughter-in-law worked at a hospital and was particular about cleanliness, but she considered herself to be quite hygienic.
Why did everything she do start feeling wrong ever since she took leave to help with the confinement period?
Luo Yue’s lips moved, but in the end, she said nothing more.
Lin Xia gently pushed Lin Aijia out of the bedroom and closed the door behind them.
After washing her hands in the bathroom, Lin Aijia was drawn into a chat with Lin Xia and never made it back to the bedroom.
Later on, Lin Xia checked the time and decided it was time to take her leave.
Luo Xinyan insisted that Lin Xia stay for dinner, "Lin Xia! Don’t go! Stay and have dinner before you leave!"
Yu Hongli also hurriedly tried to keep her, "Lin Xia! Why are you leaving? Stay here to eat! We bought quite a lot of food!"
Lin Xia refused with a smile, "No, thanks! I’ve got things to do! I’ll come over some other time when I’m free!"
"That’s fine! Whenever you’re free, just come over!"
"Sure! This child is just too charming! I will definitely come!"
"I’ll go downstairs to see her off. You all carry on with what you were doing!" Lin Aijia insisted on escorting Lin Xia downstairs.
Seeing this, neither Luo Xinyan nor Yu Hongli could possibly stop her.
When they got downstairs, Lin Xia unlocked her bicycle and wheeled it out, but Lin Aijia suggested walking with her for a while.
Lin Xia had a clear idea in her mind; her aunt must have something to say to her.
But since Luo Yue’s family lived upstairs, and she feared they might overhear, she planned to walk further away.
Indeed, as soon as they reached the next building, Lin Aijia began to speak.
"Ah, Lin Xia! How come I never realized before that Luo Yue and her mother are so talkative?
They are so restrictive with the newborn! I talked about shaping the baby’s head and binding the legs!
The mother and daughter firmly disapproved! Your Brother Hongli is no different—he just listens to whatever they say!
I am the real grandmother, could I possibly harm my own grandson? If we don’t do these things now, later his forehead and the back of his head... even if he’s a boy, it won’t look good..."
Having held back her words, Lin Aijia finally found someone to listen.
Lin Xia’s hand tightening on the handlebars was a subconscious reaction. What should she say to persuade her aunt?
"Aunt! Luo Auntie and the others are nurses; they know more than we do! You should listen to them!"
Lin Aijia asserted confidently, "What about being nurses? Even if Luo Yue is a nurse, isn’t this her first time having a baby?
How could they know more than us who have been elders for years? Which of you didn’t have your heads shaped or legs bound when you were little? Otherwise, do you think your legs could be so straight and shapely?"
Lin Xia unconsciously looked down at her own legs; indeed, they were quite straight!
But she had never had a child and didn’t really understand if all this was right or wrong.
Still, subjectively she wanted to side with Luo Xinyan and the others.
"Aunt! You can’t always think like that! You think as a grandmother you can’t harm your grandson, but could they as mothers and maternal grandmothers harm the child?
No matter what, nurses know more than we laypeople do!
Also, even if my sister-in-law doesn’t understand much because she hasn’t had children, hasn’t Luo Auntie given birth herself? Look how straight Luo Yue’s legs are! I think they are even straighter than mine!"
Lin Aijia was left somewhat speechless by Lin Xia’s words, but she still felt what she believed in was right.
"Anyhow, I still think that what the older generation handed down isn’t wrong!"
"Aunt! It’s better to clear your mind and not be like this. It just makes everyone uncomfortable when there’s a fuss! And in the end, it’s Brother Hongli who suffers! It’s tough on him between the two sides; do you just want to be comfortable?"
As soon as her own son came up, Lin Aijia’s stubbornness faded considerably.
"Am I not doing all this for their own good? And yet, they show no appreciation!"
"Enough! Children and grandchildren will make their own fortune!"
Lin Aijia was slightly swayed by Lin Xia’s persuasion and couldn’t help bringing up Lin Xia’s own situation.
"By the way, I heard from your dad that you’re selling your house?
Lin Xia, that house is so nice; if you can avoid selling it, you should! Wouldn’t it be great if your older brother could live in the third-floor apartment here when he gets married?"
