Chapter 504: Chapter 503: You Sure Are Nosy

"What else can an apartment be like? It’s the same as a bungalow! Just no need to go outside to use the toilet!"

She was not about to lead these people to her son and daughter-in-law’s place. What if they found out where it was and started showing up for no reason?

Her son had finally found a bride to his liking, and the couple was doing quite well. She couldn’t let these people come and stir up trouble.

Zhang Lanxiang felt Lin Aijia was putting on an act, and she curled her lip in disdain, "Aunt! Listen to yourself, can an apartment really be the same as a bungalow? It has a toilet and you don’t even need to light your own fire!"

Turning to Liu Shuqin, who was beside her, she said, "Mom! You’ve lived so many years without ever stepping foot in an apartment, haven’t you? Do you want to take a look and see what it’s like?"

Liu Shuqin felt caught between a rock and a hard place. She hadn’t missed the resentful look her daughter had given her earlier, and she partially regretted having blurted out to the second child’s family about Yu Hongli having an apartment.

But to tell the truth, she really did want to go up and take a look at Yu Hongli’s apartment. When had she ever lived in such a place in all her years?

"Let’s just get going! Those who want to see can go after Lin Xia’s wedding is over, when things have settled down!"

Lin Aijia looked helplessly at Liu Shuqin, her tone laced with blame, "Mom! Why do you keep meddling in other people’s business!"

If it were their family who had paid for the house, she would have the confidence to bring her family over to take a look.

But it was Luo Yue’s stepfather who bought it, so who are they to go over there with such fanfare?

Zhang Lanxiang let out an exaggerated "Ay!" "Aunt! How can you talk about the old lady like that!

If you don’t want us to go, just say so! We would all understand! After all, it was the stepfather who bought the apartment for your daughter-in-law... Your Hongli probably can’t call the shots..."

Though she envied Yu Hongli’s good fortune, she couldn’t help but despise him for being like a son-in-law living with the wife’s family, which was a disgrace!

At the mention of her words, Lin Aijia was so angry that she no longer cared about keeping up appearances, "Who says my Hongli can’t call the shots? What if I just don’t want you to go? What about that?"

She had always known what kind of person Zhang Lanxiang was, but ever since their Hongli had found a partner and gotten married, her envy of their family had only increased.

It seemed abnormal if Zhang Lanxiang didn’t say something sarcastic or try to sow discord whenever they met.

Zhang Lanxiang gave a feigned laugh, "Aunt! Why are you getting so worked up? I was just teasing you!"

"Is that your idea of a joke?" Lin Aijia said angrily, her chest heaving, "You’re just jealous that our Hongli married a good wife and now we’ve bought an apartment..."

"Aijia! Keep it down!" Yu Changbai actually couldn’t stand Zhang Lanxiang, but they were there to attend Lin Xia’s wedding, and it wouldn’t do to start a fight before even arriving. What would that look like?

"We’re not jealous at all!" Zhang Lanxiang denied emphatically, "Besides, what’s there to envy? The house isn’t in your son’s name!"

Lin Fang was so anxious she could hardly stand it, desperate to get to Lin Xia’s place to see if that guy who drove her there would also be present. But here was her mother going back and forth endlessly with her aunt.

Unable to hold back, she urged, "Mom! Please, just keep it down!"

Lin Aiye wanted to smooth things over, but Lin Aiguo, who was several meters ahead, beat him to it, "What’s with all this whispering and wasting time? Can we get moving? If you don’t want to go then just forget it and take the bus back home!" Lin Aiguo burst out in frustration.

Lin Aijia snorted coldly and strode forward, no longer paying any attention to her.

Zhang Lanxiang gave Lin Aijia a blank stare and muttered under her breath, "What’s so great about you!"

She glanced at her dejected daughter-in-law in the back, holding the child and rolled her eyes in disdain, thinking that she certainly couldn’t rely on her son and daughter-in-law to make something of themselves. Now it all hinged on whether her daughter Lin Fang could marry someone rich who could afford to buy her an apartment.

All of a sudden, her eyes lit up as she remembered the man Lin Fang had set her sights on; she wondered if he would be present at Lin Xia’s wedding...

Unaware of all this, Jiang Mingyuan, having finished his meal and made small talk, felt like an outsider. Expecting more guests and the scarcity of space inside, he excused himself in advance.

"Lin Xia! Lu Zheng! I’ve got things to attend to at my shop, I’ll be taking off! Call me if you need any help!"

"Sure! Second Brother, let us walk you out!" Lin Xia and Lu Zheng said together as they escorted him to the door.

Standing outside smoking by the screen, Lu Pengcheng saw Jiang Mingyuan leaving and quickly stepped forward to inquire, "Leaving already? I appreciate the effort, young man! Thank you!"

Jiang Mingyuan waved his hand politely, "Uncle! You’re too kind! It was nothing!"

Lu Zheng gestured to Lu Pengcheng, "Dad! Go back inside! We’ll see him off!"

"Alright!" Lu Pengcheng put out his cigarette and watched the trio walk towards the gate before he went back into the house.

Jiang Mingyuan glanced at Lin Xia, who was about to become someone else’s bride, her demure figure contrasted with Lu Zheng’s towering presence; a tumult of emotions stirred within him.

He had known Lin Xia for no small amount of time, having watched her grow from nothing to something.

No one knew better than him the hardships and fatigue she had endured along the way.

Although he had let go of his affections, regarding her as a sister from then on, watching the girl he fancied marry someone else wasn’t exactly pleasant.

However, in the face of Lu Zheng’s constant vigilance, he didn’t want to cause any unnecessary misunderstandings between the couple, so he refrained from saying anything out of line.

"Lin Xia! Bring everyone to the shop later for a meal!"

It wasn’t like the warm days when weddings could be celebrated with outdoor stoves, if they used the big pots inside the house to cook, the kang would be too hot to sleep on at night.

Lin Xia didn’t stand on ceremony with him, "Okay! Second Brother, thanks for your trouble! Sorry to have called you early this morning!"

She felt thankful for having Second Brother; otherwise, if they had to look for a car at the last minute, who knows how long Lu Pengcheng and the others might have had to endure the cold.

"Why the formality with me! I’m off then!!"

"Second Brother! Drive carefully!" Lin Xia told him.

Jiang Mingyuan smiled at her, opened the car door, and was just about to get in and drive away.

Just then, Lu Qing came running out of the gate with a small bag on her back, "Second Brother Jiang! Could you give me a lift? I want to visit Jiang Mingqing!"

Jiang Mingyuan paused for a moment, but soon regained his composure, "Sure! Get in!"

Lu Qing’s eyes crinkled with joy as she chirped an elated "Okay" and quickly climbed into the car, not forgetting to wave goodbye to Lin Xia and Lu Zheng at the door.

Lu Zheng looked on understandingly; he was well aware of his cousin’s feelings, yet he doubted Jiang Mingyuan shared the same sentiments.

As Lin Xia watched the car disappear into the distance, she thought to herself that it was likely a case of unrequited love.

Lu Zheng affectionately ruffled the top of her hair, teasing her, "The car’s out of sight! Still watching?"

Lin Xia suppressed a laugh and playfully protested, "Can’t I have a look? You’re quite controlling!"

Lu Zheng’s lips curved into a smile, "Of course! I plan to look after you for a lifetime!"

Lin Xia teased back, touching his nose, "It’s more like I’ll be looking after you for a lifetime!"
