Chapter 492: Chapter 491 I’m Really Envious of You
Lin Xia replied with a light smile, "We’re doing great! We’re getting married soon!"
She didn’t know why, but looking at Ji Man sitting across from her, every move she made seemed to exude a sense of strangeness.
Could it be the long time since they last saw each other? Had they grown unfamiliar?
Actually, since she and Ji Man had met at Yecheng University, they got along quite well.
Ji Man was her first female friend after her return!
Latter on, Ji Man often visited her stall.
Although Ji Man’s intention wasn’t really about the alcohol, as she had her sights set on Jiang Mingyuan, Lin Xia felt their relationship was quite good.
It was after Jiang Mingyuan opened his restaurant, and they both stopped going to Yecheng University, that they didn’t see each other as much.
"Really?" Ji Man’s face lit up with surprise, her eyes also flashing with joy, "Ah! Congratulations! I thought you guys were going to date a lot longer before getting married! Make sure to let me know in advance, so I can help out!"
She really hadn’t expected Lin Xia to settle things so quickly with that guy from out of town.
This time, Jiang Mingyuan would probably give up completely, right?
"Thank you! I’ll definitely tell you when the time comes!" As Lin Xia spoke, she poured hot water into the steeped teacup and handed it to Ji Man while asking about her situation, "Have you been very busy with work these past few months? Why haven’t you come to see me? You seem to have lost quite a bit of weight, haven’t you?"
Before, Ji Man’s figure was not apparent because of her cotton clothing, but now, after taking off her coat, her thin frame was evident in her patchwork sweater, and the veins on her hands gripping the cup were very pronounced.
Ji Man showed a bitter smile, "Ah, busy indeed! I’m almost dead from going to work every day! Sometimes on Sundays, when I finally have a day off, my mom pushes me into matchmaking...
So, I’m constantly in a frenzy and haven’t sought you out to avoid making you worry."
Lin Xia asked curiously, "So, have you met someone suitable now?"
Ji Man going on matchmaking dates was a good thing; it’s said that for a woman to chase a man is like a veil away, but it also depends on whether the man loves her. If there’s no spark, it’s hard to expect any results.
And a girl’s best years are but a fleeting few; youth passes quickly. It’s always better to wake up early than to delay and waste one’s life.
Ji Man shook her head, "No!" Then she smiled with a look of reflection, as if with some emotion, "Lin Xia! How could I be as smoothly sailing as you? To find someone who fits me so well and to be getting married soon! I’m truly envious of you!
How come I don’t have your kind of luck? Is it because I’ve never suffered since I was young?"
She felt that Lin Xia was truly blessed; frankly, she didn’t think she was inferior to Lin Xia in any way.
From looks and height to family and work, she was better than Lin Xia in all aspects, yet in Jiang Mingyuan’s eyes, there was only Lin Xia!
This was also the reason she didn’t want to hang out with Lin Xia after being straightforwardly rejected by Jiang Mingyuan.
She knew Lin Xia had a close relationship with Jiang Mingyuan and would definitely know about it.
She didn’t want to see pity and sympathy in Lin Xia’s eyes, nor did she want to hear Lin Xia’s lofty words of comfort.
Because she didn’t need Lin Xia to do that! It would only make her feel more pathetic, pitiable, and ridiculous!
"Ji Man! How is that possible? Isn’t it good to never have suffered? It’s just that your destiny hasn’t arrived yet! You are so beautiful; maybe when destiny comes, you’ll get married quickly too!"
Lin Xia had always found the concept of destiny fascinating; she believed that everyone would have their own destiny, it was just that the arrival time of that fate was uncertain!
"Maybe!" Ji Man slowly twirled her cup and asked the question she most wanted to ask, "Lin Xia! How’s Jiang Mingyuan doing lately? Does he have a girlfriend yet?"
Lin Xia sipped her tea lightly. She had anticipated Ji Man would bring up Jiang Mingyuan, "He’s doing well! He’s currently looking for a girlfriend! Oh, and I’ve recognized his mother as my godmother!"
She chose not to mention that Zhao Da Nainai was currently at her place, helping her sew a quilt.
Ji Man flashed a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes, "Well, aren’t you something! So, now he’s practically your godbrother?"
"Right!"
Ji Man said half-jokingly and half-seriously, "I’m not kidding, Lin Xia! You really have a way with men! From Jiang Mingyuan to your partner, they’re all so good to you! I’m dying of envy! Do you have any secrets? Teach me a thing or two?"
Lin Xia hooked her lips, her smile fading slightly, "There are no secrets!"
"Just kidding! Don’t take it seriously!" Ji Man shifted the topic at ease, "Lin Xia! How are you going to live after you get married? Isn’t he from out of town? Are you going to live in his hometown?"
Lin Xia’s mood became much more subdued, "My younger brother still has to sit his university entrance exams; I’m not going anywhere for now! If I were to go, it would have to be after he’s done with university..."
Ji Man’s smile bloomed at the corners of her mouth, "That’s true! Is your brother still doing well in his studies?"
"He’s doing okay!" Lin Xia responded cheerfully, but regarding the things happening in her life, she didn’t want to mention any of it to Ji Man.
The two parted ways at the restaurant’s door after the meal. Watching Ji Man’s retreating figure, Lin Xia sighed softly. Perhaps the friendships between women were always more fragile than those between men.
She could distinctly feel the peculiar taste in Ji Man’s smile and the difference in her words. The reason for it went without saying.
Lin Xia shook her head to clear the sighs welling up inside her and bought some food before heading home.
As she approached her house, she could hear Zhao Da Nainai and Song Zhiya laughing loudly inside.
Though she didn’t know what they found so amusing, she too curved her lips into a smile.
When she entered the Eastern House, she saw the two on the kang, faces flushed with laughter and the remnants of mirth still visible around their eyes.
"Godmother! Cousin! What are you talking about? You seem very happy?"
Song Zhiya glanced at the items in Lin Xia’s hands, then wiped her eyes and told her with a laugh, "Lin Xia! Auntie was telling me about the silly things your second brother did when he was little. It’s downright hilarious! How could he do such things?"
The prospect of laughing at those memories she had never experienced growing up in the south was irresistible to her.
Lin Xia was incredibly curious, "What kind of silly things?"
She thought to herself how thoroughly her godmother was throwing her son under the bus, sharing these stories behind his back. What would her second brother think if he knew his mother talked about him this way?
Zhao Da Nainai grinned, "Your second brother was such a mischievous kid when he was young. In the dead of winter, he’d stick his tongue out to lick an iron bar and got it stuck... Thankfully, he was clever enough not to yank it off in a panic, otherwise he would have ripped off some skin and started bleeding..."
"Ha ha..." Lin Xia also laughed heartily. She never would have guessed that her second brother, who now seemed so composed, had done such a foolish thing!
It took Zhao Da Nainai three days to finish sewing the quilt for Lin Xia.
During those three days, her relationship with Song Zhiya advanced by leaps and bounds, and their lively chats, full of laughter, astonished both Lin Xia and Luo Xinyan, who shared meals together at the same table.
When Song Yinran came over and saw Zhao Da Nainai, he too was surprised at how close his daughter had become with Lin Xia’s godmother...
