Reborn as a Rich Woman in the Eighties -
Chapter 337 - 336: Is He Worth Marrying?
Chapter 337: Chapter 336: Is He Worth Marrying?
Lin Yu had been quiet since she got married and did actually keep to herself for a while.
But once her pregnancy began to show, and she came to the store and ran into Lin Xia, she carried her face high with pride, occasionally snorting with disdain.
Lin Xia had no interest in engaging with her, lest she blame Lin Xia if she were to have a miscarriage.
After the New Year, business was typically slow. Lin Xia knew this pattern, so she wasn’t anxious or frazzled about it, taking it as a chance to rest when things weren’t busy.
Ding Ling and Sun Xiaoli in the shop watched this stark contrast and both felt a bit indignant on behalf of Lin Xia.
There’s a mutual understanding between people, some you can confide in, and others you can’t.
Lin Xia felt touched, she hadn’t misjudged them.
She told them to occupy themselves with knitting or other crafts during the slower times.
However, Chen Gang’s family across the street couldn’t accept this.
They had also done well before the New Year, so the sudden drop in sales after the holiday left Chen’s mother quite upset.
With plenty of free time at her job and not much to do, and now that her daughter-in-law was pregnant and could not spend all day in the store, she visited the store frequently.
Unhappy with the bad business, she found fault with the sales staff over everything, be it a spot not cleaned properly, or things not tidied up quickly enough.
Everyone has their pride, and it takes a lot of patience to greet someone with a smile after being insulted as if they were less than nothing.
As a result, one of the girls straight up quit.
Chen’s mother was at a loss for a while as she didn’t know the exact prices of the goods, and one person definitely couldn’t handle it.
Afterward, Lin Yu had her uncle Qian Chunsheng’s daughter Qian Jie brought in.
Chen’s mother was quite satisfied with her, after all, she was a relative of Lin Yu’s and quite good at chatting, so she was kept on the job.
Lin Xia knew Qian Jie, the Qian family had visited her home over the years, and she didn’t have a good impression of this girl.
Filled with jealousy, Qian Jie watched Lin Xia’s store across the street, questioning why Lin Xia, who was once inferior to her in every way, was now the boss with money, while she had to work for Lin Yu’s in-laws and even take a few scoldings.
It was simply too unfair.
But Lin Xia only came to this store in the mornings and evenings, and generally left after a short while, so Qian Jie hadn’t found the opportunity to assert her presence.
Even though it was the off-season, many items had sold out over the New Year.
So Lin Xia still needed to go to restock supplies.
Lin Xia didn’t trust leaving Lin Qiu alone at home, so she waited until Friday to go to the provincial capital for restocking.
Now that she had money, Lin Xia certainly didn’t want to make things difficult for herself.
However, at that time, sleeper train tickets couldn’t just be bought with money; one needed an introduction letter from their workplace.
When she had dealt with the greenhouse license, she had registered with a collective unit, and with some favors it was quite easy to get an introduction letter.
After a night on the sleeper train, Lin Xia arrived at the provincial capital feeling refreshed.
She went ahead and bought her return train ticket, but unable to get a sleeper berth, she reluctantly settled for a hard seat instead.
Then Lin Xia boarded the bus to the wholesale market to purchase supplies.
This trip, her main goal was to stock up on items for the cosmetics shop; she also needed to get some fabric and accessories, but not as much as before.
Compared to two years ago, the provincial capital of ’84 had changed significantly.
The city wasn’t the only thing undergoing rapid changes; the pedestrians on the streets were no longer limited to riding bicycles.
Lin Xia saw quite a few people riding motorcycles, knowing that most of them were the ones who got rich first through doing business.
Very few people going to work in this era could afford motorcycles.
Lin Xia first headed to the wholesale market, as she had a diverse range of goods to buy. It took her until one in the afternoon to gather everything and pack it up.
At home, Lin Qiu and Lin Dong were busy in the clothing store, one operating the sewing machine and the other sitting next to the cutting table, reading a book.
Madam Wu came in carrying a bowl of food.
"Oh, Lin Dong is here too!" After saying this, she grinned at Lin Qiu, "I’ve made some new meat dishes and thought I’d bring some over for you. Since Lin Dong is here too, you should eat it while it’s hot!"
Lin Qiu hurriedly put down her work and, with a smiling face, accepted the offer, "Madam Wu, thank you, you’re too kind! Always bringing us something delicious to eat!"
Madam Wu waved her hand, "No need for formalities with me, you’re not strangers! By the way, has your sister gone out?"
Lin Qiu replied with a smile, "Yes! She’s gone to the provincial city!"
Madam Wu wore a worried look, glancing at the Lin siblings, "Then you must make sure to lock the doors well when you sleep at night!"
"Don’t worry, Madam Wu! I am home, after all!" said Lin Dong cheerfully.
His elder sister had decided to go to buy supplies specifically when he was home because she worried about her second sister being at home alone.
"Okay, I’ll head back home then!" Madam Wu then left.
Lin Qiu called out to Lin Dong, "Dongzi, try some!"
Lin Dong leaned over to look at the not-so-many pieces of meat in the bowl, picked up a piece, and tasted it, "Hmm, not bad indeed! Once you marry into their family, you won’t have to worry about Madam Wu’s cooking not being tasty!"
"Stop teasing! If it’s tasty, you can have it all!" Lin Qiu wasn’t very interested in the meat, unlike Lin Dong, whose eyes lit up at the sight of it.
Knowing that his second sister preferred vegetarian dishes, Lin Dong didn’t stand on ceremony and quickly cleaned out the meat in the bowl.
Lin Qiu didn’t rush to return the bowl. She simply rinsed it with water and placed it on the side of the cutting table, thinking of asking Wu Zhengyang to take it back when he came over.
Seeing Lin Qiu wipe her hands and sit back down at the sewing machine, Lin Dong teased her with a mischievous smile, "Second sister, has Wu Zhengyang mentioned when he will marry you?"
Lin Qiu slapped his back a little too hard, "Keep your voice down! What will people think if they hear you!" The two families lived so close that any loud conversation could be overheard.
Lin Dong pretended to cover his mouth but laughed, "Second sister, why are you blushing? Look, your face is all red!"
Lin Qiu glared at him. She did feel her cheeks warm with embarrassment, especially because Wu Zhengyang had mentioned just a few days ago that if she wasn’t ready to marry so soon, they could simply get engaged for now.
This left her feeling conflicted.
On one hand, she was not opposed to getting engaged to Wu Zhengyang; on the other hand, she hadn’t figured out how to discuss it with her elder sister and did not know if she would agree.
Now that she saw her brother had grown into a young man and there were no outsiders in the store, Lin Qiu wanted to have a quiet chat with Lin Dong.
"Dongzi, what do you think of Wu Zhengyang? Is he worth marrying?"
Lin Dong shook his head and mused, "I think he’s quite good! As for whether he’s worth marrying, that’s for you, my second sister, to decide. Anyway, I have no objections!"
"What do you think about us getting engaged first?" Lin Qiu continued to ask.
Scratching his head, Lin Dong admitted, "I really don’t know about that! You should wait for our elder sister to come back and ask her."
How could a student like him make such a big decision?
Feeling somewhat nervous, Lin Qiu asked, "Do you think sister would agree? During the New Year, Wu Zhengyang mentioned he wanted to get married, and I flatly refused him;
later when I told our sister, she supported my decision and said a lot... she wanted me to stay home and be single for a few more years..."
