Chapter 316: Chapter 315: Why Can’t They Get Married?
When Lin Aiguo arrived at the clothing store, Lin Qiu was ironing freshly made clothes on the ironing board.
She looked up and saw Lin Aiguo entering, quickly greeting him, "Dad! You’re here!" She no longer felt the fear towards him as she used to.
As soon as Lin Aiguo stepped inside, he noticed the stove burning brightly, "Hmm! Hard at work! This little room is quite warm!"
Lin Qiu pulled out the iron plug, planning to iron in a moment, "Yes! The stove is really easy to use! Dad, did you come for something?"
"Your Sister Hongmei is getting married next month! I hurried over to let you know!" Lin Aiguo bent down to warm his hands near the stove.
"Ah! Really? Does my sister know about it?" Lin Qiu handed him a stool.
Yu Hongmei had been dating her partner for several years, so the news of her marriage didn’t surprise Lin Qiu much.
"She knows, I just came from her place, she said the gifts will arrive but not the person!" He actually wanted to talk to Lin Qiu about her partner, but their relationship had just started to improve, and he feared that saying too much might backfire.
So he asked, "Where’s Lin Dong?"
"In the yard sawing wood!"
"Alright! Carry on with your work!" Lin Aiguo went straight through the back door into the yard.
Lin Dong, wearing a hat and gloves, and clad in a black cotton jacket, was busy working.
When he saw Lin Aiguo emerge from the door, "Dad! What brings you here?"
"I’ve come over for a bit of business!" He repeated the news of Yu Hongmei’s wedding.
As father and son chatted, Lin Aiguo also lent a hand with the work.
Mrs. Wu from next door came out to pour water and, hearing the noise, knew that Lin Aiguo had come to their house, so after finishing with the water, she headed to Wu Zhenghong’s barbershop.
Wu Zhenghong was busy giving someone a haircut when she saw the look on her mother’s face and knew there was something she wanted to say.
"Mom! What’s up?"
Mrs. Wu glanced at the neighbors from the front yard, who were also getting haircuts, and knowing that some matters shouldn’t be discussed in front of them.
"You go about your work! I’ll tell you later!"
When only the two of them were left, Mrs. Wu whispered to Wu Zhenghong, "Dahong! Lin Qiu’s dad has come to our place! He’s working in the yard with Lin Dong right now! I’m thinking, should we not sit down with him and Lin Xia to discuss Xiaoqiu’s relationship with Dahong."
Now that the two of them were getting along well, although she sometimes worried Xiaoqiu might forget about his mother once he got married, Lin Qiu seemed to have a good temperament, not likely to cause trouble.
So she was thinking it would be good to settle their marriage soon, in hopes of having grandchildren earlier.
"Mom! Sitting down to talk is fine. We live nearby anyway, and they get along well. Xiaoqiu is not young either, but Lin Qiu will only be twenty after the new year. Would they agree?" Wu Zhenghong voiced her concern, since the two had only been dating for half a year.
Mrs. Wu didn’t think Lin Qiu’s family would disagree, "How would we know if we don’t talk about it? I’ll ask him when your brother comes back!" She still wanted to know her son’s thoughts.
Wu Zhenghong went along with her, "Right! We should consider Xiaoqiu’s feelings! Whether he wants to get married early! If he does want to, and Lin Qiu is willing too, Lin Xia is quite reasonable; she shouldn’t object... As for their father, he seems to be alright..."
When Wu Zhengyang returned home from work, Mrs. Wu asked him whether he wanted to marry Lin Qiu sooner.
Wu Zhengyang certainly wanted to get married; he wasn’t getting any younger, and he and Lin Qiu got on well and were in love. Getting married sooner would give him peace of mind.
However, he still had to ask Lin Qiu her thoughts on this matter.
When he did, Lin Qiu told him they should at least continue to date for another year or two.
"Xiaoqiu! Why?" Wu Zhengyang didn’t understand, "Aren’t we doing quite well together? Don’t you want to marry me?" He felt somewhat disappointed when he heard Lin Qiu’s words.
All along, they had been getting along very well, and he was confident in how much Lin Qiu cared about him.
Lin Qiu knew that Wu Zhengyang was sincere about her, but bringing up marriage now felt too soon.
She explained softly, "My sister hasn’t even married yet! How can I marry before her? Besides, I’m not old enough to marry yet!"
Actually, she wasn’t all that certain, but the fact that her sister was unmarried and she herself was young could serve as valid reasons.
Wu Zhengyang felt helpless but couldn’t do anything about it. After all, Lin Xia was indeed unmarried, and Lin Qiu, being the younger sister, was also very young.
When Mother Wu heard that her son said to continue dating and talk about it later, she understood it must be because Lin Qiu hadn’t agreed. Otherwise, she knew her son’s reactions well.
She angrily went to complain to Wu Zhenghong.
"Dahong! How could our youngest not want to get married? It must be Lin Qiu who doesn’t want to tie the knot! The kid is taking all the blame upon himself, not wanting to marry now, hmph, she’ll regret this one day!"
If it came to a breakup, a man could always find someone younger at any time, but she wondered what this young lady would do then.
Wu Zhenghong didn’t feel there was an issue, as Lin Qiu was only twenty that year and there was no rush.
"Mom! I’ve noticed how you tend to overreact to things. Lin Qiu is so young, and it’s not like Lin Xia and her partner are going to get married immediately. In my opinion, there’s nothing wrong with what she’s saying! Are you actually hoping that our youngest fails to end up with Lin Qiu in the end?
I don’t mean to be harsh, but if our youngest doesn’t continue with her, where else could he find such a wife? Someone beautiful and good-natured who can earn money too?
Now Lin Xia has even opened a cosmetics store, and I hear the business is doing very well. She wouldn’t let her own sister suffer..."
Mother Wu waved her hand dismissively with a sheepish expression, "How could I truly think that? I just feel frustrated!" She also knew that with their family’s status, finding someone like Lin Qiu was indeed like searching for a needle in a haystack.
But as a mother-in-law, she always struggled with an inherent sense of superiority concerning her son.
Lin Xia had no idea this incident had happened, as Lin Qiu hadn’t mentioned it to her afterwards either.
Mother Wu kept probing with well-meaning questions about how Lin Xia’s relationship was going and when the wedding would be, meeting her twice afterwards.
Lin Xia sensed something was odd and asked Lin Qiu what was going on.
Lin Qiu candidly told her the whole story, "...Sister! You haven’t married yet, how could I possibly get married?"
Lin Xia smiled, "Why can’t you get married? If I never marry, does that mean you never will either?"
She had once thought that if things didn’t work out with Lu Zheng, she wouldn’t look for anyone else, so there was a significant possibility that she might never marry!
Lin Qiu felt that such a scenario was simply impossible, "How could that be! You and Brother Lu will surely get married after Dongzi starts college!"
She and Lin Dong had privately discussed this topic before.
"Silly girl! You can’t make assumptions about these things! Let’s talk about your situation first!" Lin Xia also wanted to keep her younger sister at home for another year or two. After getting married and starting a family, where would she find the freedom and ease she has now?
So, when Lin Qiu said she didn’t want to marry, Lin Xia was very supportive.
