Chapter 185 - 184: Did Not Sleep Well
Chapter 185: Chapter 184: Did Not Sleep Well
The night was deep, yet Lin Xia hadn’t fallen asleep.
Whenever she thought about Lu Zheng sleeping in the Western House just across a living room, she simply couldn’t find sleep.
She wondered if he felt the same.
Reflecting on everything that happened during the day, she still found it unbelievable.
She felt it was surreal, yet it had truly happened.
The words he said by the riverside seemed to still echo in her ears, every single one.
Lin Xia covered half her face, thankful that Lin Qiu was already fast asleep, snoring softly, unaware of her blushing cheeks.
How could she possibly not be moved by Lu Zheng? But liking someone didn’t mean she had to possess them.
His looks and qualifications were too good; he deserved someone better, someone more suited for him.
Yet, seeing his persistence, she felt somewhat sorry for him.
Perhaps it was better this way, to start off as friends.
Who knew what the future held? They would take it one step at a time.
In the Western House, Lu Zheng was also awake, his hands behind his head as he gazed at the ceiling in thought.
His ears were very sensitive, and he had heard that someone in the Eastern House had not yet slept, which made the corners of his mouth rise slightly.
She must also be finding it as hard to sleep as he was, right?
He was leaving tomorrow, and it was uncertain when they would meet again.
But now his heart was somewhat relieved; he had expressed his feelings and had seized the initiative.
Even if that second brother returned safely and confessed his feelings, with a sister like that, Lin Xia surely wouldn’t...
Although the young girl hadn’t agreed, he could tell her hesitation wasn’t due to a lack of affection for him, but because of family ties and the gap between them.
What of it?
Lu Zheng didn’t care; all he cared about was him and her.
The night was destined to be sleepless...
Lin Xia got up late the next morning. By the time she dressed and came out, Lin Qiu had already prepared breakfast and was about to set it on the table.
Lu Zheng was there too, looking fresh and helping out. Judging by his damp hair, he appeared to have already washed up.
"Wash up and eat!" Lu Zheng said with an amused look at Lin Xia.
She wore clothes for going out, but her face still had the dazed look of someone newly awake, which made her look very cute.
He really wanted to ruffle her hair, to pinch her cheeks.
Lin Xia’s face flushed. She hummed a response and quickly went to brush her teeth and wash her face.
She couldn’t help but think that he was making himself very much at home, as if he were in his own house!
Lin Qiu silently observed their little interactions and could now be certain, her future brother-in-law was settled.
Once Lin Xia had made herself presentable, both Lin Qiu and Lu Zheng were sitting at the table waiting for her.
Seeing this, Lin Xia said, "Why aren’t you eating? Go ahead! It’ll get cold!"
Lu Zheng’s eyes were soft as he looked at her with a faint smile, "Waiting for you!"
"Let’s eat! Hurry up and eat!" Lin Xia grabbed a bun, bowed her head, and started eating. She didn’t know why, but the normally bland porridge suddenly tasted delicious.
The three of them ate breakfast in silence, and Lin Qiu felt a bit superfluous.
"Sis! I finished knitting big brother’s sweater last night. I’ve got to go to my master’s house today; I already missed one day yesterday, and she must be overwhelmed with work by now!"
Lin Xia looked up, "Then you should go!"
She knew that nowadays, Lin Qiu did a lot of the work for Madam Tao, and having already missed a day yesterday, it was not good to delay further.
Although she understood what was on the little girl’s mind, she couldn’t point it out in front of Lu Zheng.
"Okay!" Lin Qiu covered the smile at the corner of her mouth with the act of drinking porridge.
Lu Zheng hooked his lips slightly, very pleased with his future sister-in-law’s actions, as it provided him with more time to spend with Lin Xia.
Lin Qiu finished her breakfast quickly and left the house.
Lin Xia and Lu Zheng were only halfway through their meal, eating slowly.
Lu Zheng looked at Lin Xia across the table and asked, "Did you sleep well last night?"
Lin Xia glanced at him and then lowered her eyes, "Yes, I did!"
"Hmm!" Lu Zheng spoke forthrightly, "I didn’t sleep well!"
"Unaccustomed to the new place, perhaps?" Lin Xia commented offhandedly.
Lu Zheng told the truth, "No! I couldn’t sleep thinking that you were sleeping in the next room!"
"You... just eat your food!" Lin Xia’s face grew hotter, wondering when he had learned to say things like this.
He was always so stern; it turned out it was all an act.
Lu Zheng didn’t let up, he inquired, "Couldn’t you also not sleep because I was in the next room?"
"Not at all! I slept very well!" Lin Xia retorted, biting into a bun fiercely as if to vent her frustration.
Lu Zheng raised an eyebrow, a playful smile dancing in his eyes, "Really? Then why did you get up late?"
"I... What’s wrong with lying in for a bit?" Lin Xia avoided looking at him, her head bowed.
Last night, the later it became, the less she managed to sleep, only drifting off in the latter half of the night. They must have been quiet, which is why she didn’t hear anything and woke up late.
Lu Zheng watched her chew slowly and then suddenly said, "I’m leaving this afternoon! Besides the intestine and the sweater, is there anything else you want me to bring to your brother? Have you got any messages for him?"
Lin Xia actually wanted to buy a watch for her brother, but that was definitely not possible now.
"No more errands! Just tell him to take care of himself! Everything is fine at home and he doesn’t need to worry about us!
And don’t learn from our second brother’s situation! Tell him to look after himself!" She knew her eldest brother weighed a lot on his mind, and if he knew about their second brother’s unclear situation, it would surely trouble him.
Lu Zheng nodded, "Okay! Anything else?"
"No, that’s it!"
"Don’t you have anything to say to me?" Lu Zheng sat up straight.
Lin Xia coughed lightly to hide the fluttering in her heart, "You too, take care!"
"I will!" Lu Zheng gazed intently at Lin Xia, "Lin Xia! I know you don’t dislike me. It’s just because of the many concerns and entanglements that you haven’t said yes directly, but I’m willing to give you time... I’ll wait for you... no matter how long it takes..."
Lin Xia’s emotions were a mixed bag, and she couldn’t bring herself to say something that went against her heart.
"Lu Zheng..." She was about to speak when suddenly the front door sounded; someone entered directly.
Lin Qiu had left, and no one had gone out to close the door.
Lin Xia hurriedly stood up to look into the courtyard, only to see that the person who entered was not just anyone—it was their second brother they had all been searching for!
"Second Brother!" Lin Xia rushed into the courtyard, excited, to see Jiang Mingyuan with messy hair and a scruffy beard, his clothes dirty and disheveled.
He had placed many big and small bags of items around him.
Jiang Mingyuan, seeing Lin Xia’s reddened eyes, forced a smile, "Lin Xia! You must have been anxious, eh? There was a little problem on the road!"
Lin Xia spoke swiftly, "You really worried us to death! Old Lady Zhao had such concern for your absence that her heart ailment acted up, and she even visited my house with your sister yesterday!
And Sheng Yijin, we’ve been searching for you these past few days! What exactly happened to you?"
Jiang Mingyuan hurriedly asked, "How’s mom now? Nothing serious, right?"
"She’s fine! But who knows if that would be the case if you hadn’t come back!"
Just as Jiang Mingyuan was about to explain, he noticed a tall and handsome man walking out of the house. His heart lurched, and feigning composure he asked, "Lin Xia! Who is this gentleman?"
