Chapter 154: Chapter 153 Can I?
Lin Xia helped Lin Chun arrange the dishes and dumplings by the bed and briefly shared with him the origin of the two of them.
"...I only just found out that the Lingzhi mushrooms I sold were all bought by his aunt..."
Lin Chun put down his chopsticks, dumbfounded, "That’s really too much of a coincidence!"
He had known when his big sister was selling those Lingzhi mushrooms! That was the seed money for her business.
Lin Xia agreed, "Yeah! Who could have thought? If I had known he was in the same unit as you, I definitely would have given her a discount back then..."
Fortunately, the next time she sold them to Meifang, the situation between them was fairly okay and not as tense as it had been the first time.
Lin Chun said solemnly, "Actually, it’s nothing much! Xiaoxia, don’t think too much... Big brother just does his work, doing his duty is enough! We don’t deal with those illusions..."
Lin Xia nodded, "I understand! Big brother, please eat your meal!"
Lin Xia took care of Lin Chun in the hospital for a few more days, attending to him while her mind was still preoccupied with the two back home.
When she had left in a hurry, she had only left a message for Lin Dong to leave twenty dollars.
If nothing major happened, this money should be enough for them.
But she was worried that on one hand they might panic, and on the other, she feared that Lin Aiguo and others might come looking for them.
Also, her second brother had been sending goods on her behalf for several days now and should have returned by then.
After leaving the hospital, Lin Chun was set to go back to his unit to recuperate, where the medical staff could take care of him.
Lin Xia also went to see the place where he lived and worked, and though she didn’t turn that many heads outside, once at this place, several men were outrightly staring at her;
some even grinned at her sheepishly, making her feel especially embarrassed.
She knew they meant no harm; their unit simply had too few women and was mostly a man’s world. Seeing a woman was just out of curiosity.
The people in Lin Chun’s group even saluted Lin Xia and then sneakily exchanged glances with Lin Chun.
Lin Xia couldn’t help but feel that these were a bunch of lovely people!
After touring around, Lin Xia prepared to get into the car to leave.
Lu Zheng personally drove her, which made her feel quite flattered.
Along the way, they didn’t talk much, just making occasional small talk.
But as they neared the station, Lu Zheng suddenly said, "Lin Xia! Can I write to you in the future?"
Lin Xia was slightly startled, she hadn’t expected him to ask her that.
She couldn’t possibly say no!
"Of course!"
"Great!" Lu Zheng curled his lips, seemingly quite pleased.
Lin Xia hesitated but still expressed her concern, "Lu Zheng! Please take care of my big brother then!"
"With me here, rest assured!" Lu Zheng promptly promised.
Lin Xia felt relieved and thought she should make some gesture in return, "Then... I’ll send you something delicious in a few days!"
"Great!"
The laughter in Lu Zheng’s voice was discernible to Lin Xia, and for some reason, she felt her face heating up.
Why was it that despite it being late May, with the jeep’s window slightly open, allowing the breeze in, she still felt hot?
Lu Zheng dropped her off at the station and used his connections to secure her a sleeper berth.
Lin Xia felt even more embarrassed. She had initially planned just to buy a hard seat and didn’t want him to spend any money. However, Lu Zheng assertively led her along, not allowing her to stray even half a step from him.
The two chatted leisurely while waiting for the train, and afterwards Lu Zheng escorted Lin Xia to the sleeper compartment and gave her a couple of reminders before he got off the train.
Yet he didn’t leave immediately after standing outside the compartment, but just watched Lin Xia inside with a faint gaze.
Lin Xia smiled and waved at him, signaling that he could go ahead if he had other things to handle.
He shook his head, however, and stood there until the train started moving.
The last expression Lu Zheng left in Lin Xia’s eyes was a smile with the corners of his mouth lifted; she realized then that he looked exceptionally handsome when he smiled.
Lin Xia sat on the lower bunk feeling odd, as even she could tell that his feelings towards her were not ordinary.
Yet his every move revealed his extraordinary background, and with his strikingly handsome appearance, despite their few encounters, she felt that she never presented a good image in any of them.
What exactly were his feelings towards her ...
Lin Xia covered her warm face, afraid to think any deeper.
She carried too many responsibilities and had too many constraints, and felt she didn’t match him at all.
That woman named Meifang clearly came from a well-off family, and Lu Zheng’s mother, whom she had also met, definitely didn’t lack in poise and dress either.
With such a family background, how could he possibly take an interest in her?
Lin Xia forcefully slapped her own face, trying to calm herself down.
Perhaps she was overthinking things; there was no aspect in which she could attract him.
Maybe it was just pity, like that time she was curled up at the junction of the train compartments, and he gave her his seat—it was nothing more than a compassionate act prompted by seeing her in distress.
After thinking it over seriously, she decided she wouldn’t seek relationships or marriage in the future. After arranging everything for her family, she would live freely alone—so why think about these things?
But the human heart is complex and changeable. Lin Xia tried to control her thoughts, yet Lu Zheng’s handsome and stern face kept flashing before her eyes.
She knew she wasn’t emotionless towards Lu Zheng; it was just that she didn’t dare to harbor expectations, fearing that the ultimate heartbreak would throw her into an abyss she could never climb out of.
She thought about a lot on the journey, and by the time Lin Xia got off the train, her mind was clear, leaving those chaotic thoughts behind for the moment.
When she arrived home and saw someone inside, her heart settled upon finding the door bolted from within.
She knocked a few times, and Lin Qiu came out to open the door for her.
No sooner had Lin Qiu seen Lin Xia than she started speaking anxiously, "Sis, you’re finally back! How’s our big brother? Is he alright? After receiving your message that he was fine, Dongzi and I have been really worried!"
Lin Xia calmly bolted the door and walked inside with Lin Qiu as she replied, "He’s alright! Doing well ..."
After they sat down, she briefly learned about the military matters from Lin Qiu. She then asked, "I’ve been worried about you two as well! Was everything okay at home? Did Dongzi go to school? Why didn’t you go to Aunt Tao’s house?"
Lin Qiu replied, "We’re all good! Dongzi went to school early!
I would have left later because of a stomach upset. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been here when you got back!"
Knowing they were all fine, Lin Xia finally felt completely relieved.
"What happened to you? What did you eat? How could you get a stomach upset? Did Second Brother come home? Has he returned from his delivery?"
She figured it had been several days, and he should have been back by now.
"I’m not sure! Must have eaten something bad!" Lin Qiu exchanged words with her, "Second Brother came back a few days ago. He came home after delivering goods, knew you weren’t home, and went to see Big Brother, and he told me and Dongzi to approach him if we needed anything!"
Lin Xia asked, "Oh! And the goods?"
"They are in the living room! Sis, haven’t you had dinner yet? Let me make something for you!" Lin Qiu hurried to the kitchen.
Lin Xia also came out of the bedroom, "Okay, sure! Just keep it simple! I’ll check the goods first!"
