Chapter 124 - 123 Reunion
Chapter 124: Chapter 123 Reunion
On the train, Lin Xia idly observed the passengers in the compartment, thinking that people were still quite genuine at times like this.
They chatted about everything under the sun, and she wasn’t as reserved as before, occasionally striking up a conversation with those sitting next to her.
The slow train stopped at each station, so it didn’t move quickly, with people constantly getting on and off.
After twelve o’clock, the carriage gradually quieted down as people leaned or sprawled, each trying to find a way to sleep.
Lin Xia saw the man opposite her lying on the small table. She leaned against the hard seat’s backrest, closed her eyes, and also dozed off.
When the train stopped at the next station, Lin Xia became aware that it wasn’t moving and woke up. The seat opposite her was empty, presumably the person had gotten off.
Fresh, brisk air poured into the carriage, invigorating her spirit. Lin Xia looked out the window, not knowing which station they had reached.
Lin Xia rubbed her eyes and yawned, thinking it was just right that the small table was now free for her to lie down on to sleep.
But her eyes instantly widened when she saw the man who had given up his seat for her boarding the train.
Lin Xia felt a surge of happiness. She had been too aloof last time, and this time she could properly thank him.
But she was a bit conflicted, unsure whether she should greet him. What if he just ignored her? Wouldn’t that be terribly embarrassing?
Lu Zheng boarded the train, looking for a seat, and unexpectedly saw the interesting little girl blinking at him with an expression that suggested she was weighing something up; it was particularly amusing in the dead of night.
The girl bit her lip as if she had made a decision and waved to him, "Comrade! There’s a free seat here!"
A smile crossed Lu Zheng’s face, and he headed straight for her seat.
By the time Lu Zheng settled down, Lin Xia heaved a huge sigh of relief. The two looked at each other but didn’t quite know what to say.
Lin Xia, more outwardly expressive through her business dealings, ventured, "Comrade! Thanks for last time!"
If it weren’t for the seat he had passed to her, she might have ended up squatting at the junction of the carriages all night and gotten off the train feeling even worse.
Also, her initial attitude wasn’t good, yet he hadn’t held it against her. This made her feel quite remorseful; she couldn’t quite measure up to his magnanimity.
"You’re welcome," Lu Zheng said indifferently.
Last time, he had only helped the girl because he couldn’t bear to see her squeezed in there; he had found his own behavior inexplicable afterward.
He hadn’t expected to encounter her again.
Lin Xia pursed her lips; she had almost forgotten this man was poker-faced, but no matter, she intended to be magnanimous as well.
She struck up the conversation again, "So, are you on a business trip or heading home?"
"Heading home," Lu Zheng replied, and that was the end of that.
Lin Xia coughed lightly, feeling a twinge of awkwardness. She somewhat regretted inviting him to sit down across from her. The thought of having to face him until the next morning made her grit her molars in silent frustration.
Lu Zheng saw the subtle expressions on her face, and a trace of amusement flickered through his eyes. He wasn’t used to making small talk, but he was quite willing to listen to her.
The girl before him was expressive, her eyes lively and sincere. She regarded him as someone who had helped her, and her voice was pleasant to listen to, its crispness soothing to the ear.
Noticing her discomfort, he finally spoke, "Do you travel by train often?"
Lin Xia quietly exhaled, relieved; his previous demeanor had been quite intimidating.
"Yeah, I have to go back and forth every once in a while!"
"For business?"
Lin Xia shook her head, "No!"
Lu Zheng’s eyes flashed with surprise, but he politely chose not to continue asking questions.
Lin Xia glanced at the people next to her, now all drowsy, and leaned closer to him across the small table, whispering, "I’m going to buy something!"
Lu Zheng nodded, realizing the implication behind her words.
For the two of them, not being well-acquainted, even exchanging these few words was quite good.
Later, Lin Xia kept lifting and bowing her head as drowsiness overcame her, and after confirming that he wasn’t using the small table, she leaned on it and closed her eyes to sleep.
Lu Zheng maintained his upright sitting posture without moving. At first, he gazed out the window, lost in thought.
Later, his gaze occasionally and stealthily swept over Lin Xia’s head and profile.
He knew it was impolite to do so, yet he couldn’t control his urge to observe her.
This young girl, whom he had encountered several times, always intrigued him.
Her hair was pitch black, shining glossily under the dim light. Sleeping, she resembled an innocent child, with long eyelashes, a small nose, and slightly upturned red lips that made her look adorable.
Lu Zheng didn’t know what had come over him, wondering why he was staring at a young girl. He justified it by the fact that they were sitting opposite each other.
Lin Xia woke up groggily and looked around the carriage and out the window, only to find that the man opposite her had disappeared.
She instinctively looked around, but his figure was nowhere to be seen within her field of vision.
Lin Xia guessed that he hadn’t gotten off the train, probably just moved to another seat.
She lay back down on the small table, gazing into the murky darkness outside the window, wondering when dawn would break.
That’s when she caught a faint whiff of smoke, and turning her head sharply, she saw him.
Lin Xia immediately guessed that he had likely gone to the junction area between carriages to smoke, laughing inwardly at how particular he was about not smoking inside the compartment.
Lu Zheng looked at her drowsy state, "You’re awake!"
"Yeah! Comrade, you should take my place and sleep on the table for a while," Lin Xia quickly sat up, vacating the small table she had occupied.
"Thanks, but no need!"
"Oh!" Lin Xia didn’t say more; after all, she had offered, and whether or not he slept was his own issue.
The hardest part of a train journey in a hard seat is not being able to stretch one’s legs, always cooped up. Lin Xia excused herself to move around a bit next to her fellow passengers; otherwise, she would have been really uncomfortable.
When she returned, the man opposite her was leaning back in his seat with his eyes closed, either resting or asleep.
Having slept a while already, Lin Xia wasn’t tired anymore. She stared out at the night sky, lost in thought, unaware of the exact time since it was still dark and she had no watch.
Eventually, out of boredom, she turned her gaze back to him and noticed that if he didn’t open his eyes, from his facial shape to his features, he was quite handsome.
In her mind, Lin Xia idly mused, but his eyes were simply too cold, like icy shards, and he never seemed to show any expressions. She had seen him a few times and never noticed him smiling.
Later, she got sleepy again and fell asleep on the small table, waking up only when it was dimly light outside.
Lin Xia followed everyone else in washing up, then got a basin of hot water and returned to her seat. After some thought, she asked, "I brought a lot of boiled eggs and fried dough cakes. Would you like some, comrade?"
"No need, thanks!" Lu Zheng waved his hand, not accustomed to eating in such an environment.
Lin Xia didn’t insist. The fried dough cakes with eggs had cooled down but were not too stiff; she added some pickled vegetables, rolled one up, and began to eat with great relish.
Lu Zheng wanted to laugh again. She was the first girl to eat so freely in front of him, and she seemed to enjoy her food immensely.
