"That should be easy." Huxian said softly. "Plunge yourself into the void, and comprehend the law."

As soon as she said that, Ash felt his body become so heavy, and he eventually fell into the bottomless void. Once he was inside the void, he could still hear Huxian’s voices from above.

"Will Master be okay? Where did he go?"

"Worry not, Shanguang. He will be just fine."

When Ash was being enveloped by the void, Huxian focused on Shanguang’s training after she gave her a training routine for Shanguang to hunt some wild animals in the forest which she generated from her boundless power as a Transcendent Immortal Beast.

Even though he was a powerful Immortal Beast, Ash does not have a sufficient Mana Affinity to be able to feel the mana.

"We’re going to build your physical strength first. This will cost you lots of energy and time. But at least we aimed for one type of Mana at the moment," explained Huxian, guiding Ash to go down deeper into the void.

Entering the most bottom layer of the void, Ash could feel the coldness felt very damp, thick, and viscose, and there was not a single source of light. Very dark. Ash only relied on Huxian’s voice as he went down.

"Every layer of this void has one type of Mana. Luckily for us, this layer has the very foundation of all life. Which is Fire Mana. Similar to Yang Qi, Fire Mana generates heat. However, this type of energy is wilder and more destructive." acknowledged Huxian.

"Okay, should I clad myself with Yin Qi?" Ash remarked. He was starting to feel the heat.

"Do we?" Huxian replied, a faint smirk plastered on her face. "A Mage would not need any protection from Mana. They relied on their instinct and all of their senses to befriend it. Well, if you are lucky... there will be a sun above your head. And from it, you should be able to draw and comprehend the law of Fire Mana."

Ash listened carefully to Huxian’s lectures. She taught the young phoenix about the fundamental knowledge about the energy that could set an entire galaxy ablaze in a fiery inferno that would burn for eons. If only Huxian hadn’t mysteriously learnt this law from a Mage Warrior cladded in a black shroud, Ash wouldn’t be able to learn this confidential knowledge which was not written in any book or scripture that circulated amongst elite cultivators.

"But you’re right, we do need a torch. No, you need a torch. The tiniest one," said Huxian before she flicked her fingers and a baby flame appeared above his face.

Ash was surprised to see the fire that suddenly appeared. The memory of that morning’s nightmare when Tienxing was brutally murdered, it relapsed in his mind, and reflexively, he tried to fly away.

"Are you alright?" Huxian frowned upon hearing a faint squeaking noise from him. She then moved the tiny flame at Ash’s face to check his condition.

The expression on his face looked different from before. His eyes continued to stare at the fire, and he didn’t seem to hear Huxian’s question.

"Hey, it’s just a baby flame. It won’t hurt you. Your body was made from the oldest source of fire of all." Huxian moved the fire until it touched his shoulder to get his attention, and it worked. "A baby flame," she repeated once more convincingly.

"Do you have anything to tell me?" Huxian asked, as she noticed his panting breath.

"No... I’m good," answered Ash. Trying to focus on the present and chase away the image of the terrifying battle that had killed Tienxing. "I’m ready. Baby Flame is much better. I guess."

Huxian narrowed her eyes as if to scrutinise the young phoenix, whether he was lying or not. "Fine. Shall we begin?"

The training that Ash has to do is actually straightforward. Following his goal to increase Mana Affinity and Sensitivity Ash must carry out several rituals.

All the rituals were carried out in this cramped, damp and very dark void for indefinitely. However, because there’s only one tiny flame above his head, Ash didn’t know for sure... how many days, or years had passed since the training had begun.

He could feel all the muscles within his body were burning, while his dripping sweat had made his father drenched with sweat. The muscles in his body were already numb, but he didn’t stop before Huxian told him to stop. Infusing his body with chaotic energy.

After what seemed like eternity, Ash felt all of his muscle was being restructured, from inside out. His muscles in the wings, shoulders, chest, stomach, thighs, ankle, even his talon. Everything had been enhanced significantly.

The beguiling ritual that Ash did was the most basic stage for someone who was determined to become a Mage in the Althean Great Continent, or any other universe where Mana was readily available in abundance.

And mostly, Fire Type Mage came from the people willing to put everything on the line to surpass their limit. Some even did extreme training in seclusion to attain unprecedented height and even fight with a cultivator toe to toe.

In contrast to Cultivators, who have been blessed since birth with inherited Qi Affinity from their parents, Mages know better what the metaphor from zero to hero truly means.

Ash didn’t complain and did what had to be done.
