Chapter 1179: Telling Su Bing
Chapter 1179: Telling Su Bing
Editor: EndlessFantasy Translation
Really, if anyone was to blame, it was that irresponsible scoundrel Xu Ye—the same Xu Ye who let Su Mo bear not one, not two, but three children for him and then vanished like mist.
Perhaps he had been a good soldier. Perhaps he had served his country with honor and accolades. But none of that could erase the undeniable truth: he was a terrible man and an even worse father.
Gu Zi had agreed to let the children attend Xu Sheng’s birthday celebration for two reasons. First, because Xu Sheng himself was innocent in all of this. And second—though she’d never admit it aloud—because she was curious. Curious to see what kind of family the illustrious Xu clan really was.
But now that she had seen it all with her own eyes, she only felt a deeper, heavier ache for Su Mo. This sprawling mansion—so vast it had corridors that echoed with every footstep—wasn’t big enough for Su Mo and her three children?
Xu Ye had slipped away in secret, returning to the capital to resume his life of ease and privilege, likely without a single thought of ever going back for Su Mo or the children he left behind. The sheer audacity of it.
Gu Zi didn’t want to dwell on it any longer. She dabbed away a tear that had escaped the corner of her eye and went off to find Su Le, who had just devoured a mini cupcake and had cream smudged along her cheeks and the corners of her mouth. With practiced care, Gu Zi wiped her clean and then led her off to wash her hands.
Yu Fang returned with drinks and caught sight of this quiet scene—and immediately felt a twinge of guilt.
She had been the one to ask her second son, Xu Fan, to retrieve the children once he had tracked them down. In her heart, she had truly believed that the children must have suffered terribly all this time—raised by an uncle and aunt instead of their biological family. Surely, no one could care for them as deeply as their real grandmother and uncle would.
But these past few days had changed her. She had seen it for herself: how responsible Gu Zi and Su Shen were. Not only had they taken the three children in, but they had raised them with extraordinary love and care. The children were polite, happy, and so well-behaved—it was impossible not to see that they were thriving. It was no wonder Xu Fan had refused to bring them back.
Yu Fang could tell. These children were truly happy in that little household.
She had once been so determined to see the children "return to their roots," to be officially recognized by the Xu family. She hadn’t considered anything beyond that.
But now, in hindsight, she could see how deeply the Xu family had failed them. If the truth about their parentage ever came to light, she wasn’t so sure the children would forgive them. Su Shen and Gu Zi might never allow the Xu family near the kids again.
So maybe this—this quiet, unspoken understanding—was best. She could still show love to her grandchildren, even if she never claimed them. Whatever Xu Sheng had, she would make sure the other three had it too. She would move heaven and earth, if she had to.
After the meal and sweets were done, Xu Sheng enthusiastically led the group up to the third floor for a "grand tour."
As they walked, he gestured animatedly, "This is my grandfather’s private gallery. All these paintings are his prized collection—very expensive. That one over there, he bought overseas many years ago. Cost him a small fortune!"
Su Li, eyes flitting from painting to sculpture, asked curiously, "Where is your grandfather today? We haven’t seen him at all."
Xu Sheng hesitated, caught off guard. "My grandfather’s been ill for a long time," he said softly. "He’s bedridden, so he can’t come out to see anyone."
But inside, he was dying to introduce his grandfather to them—to show him that he had two more grandsons and a beautiful little granddaughter. Maybe it would lift the old man’s spirits, maybe even bring him a little strength. Who knows? Maybe that would be enough to start getting better.
He just couldn’t understand why his father and grandmother refused to tell Su Bing and the others the truth. He had overheard snippets—something about Grandma feeling guilt over Su Bing’s mother.
Well then, maybe it should be him. Maybe he was the one who should tell Su Bing the truth.
Xu Sheng’s eyes shifted to Su Bing, who was trailing slightly behind the group. His gaze lingered.
Su Bing frowned, his voice frosty, "Why do you keep staring at me? Is there something on my face?"
Snapping out of it, Xu Sheng quickly looked away. "No, no. Nothing like that. Let’s just keep exploring. Su Li, you know all the fun games—how about you think up one for us to play after the tour?"
Now that was music to Su Li’s ears. He grinned, "Your house is huge, and there are so many rooms. How about we play hide-and-seek?"
Xu Sheng’s eyes lit up. "That’s perfect! Once we finish walking through this corridor, let’s start. First round—Su Li, you’re the seeker."
After a quick rundown of the remaining paintings, they began their game.
Su Li covered his eyes and started counting. "You guys better hide fast! I’ll start looking once I hit one hundred! One... two... three..."
Xu Sheng didn’t rush to hide. Instead, he quietly followed Su Bing, matching each step, waiting to see where he would go. The moment they rounded a corner and he was sure no one else was around, Xu Sheng darted forward and grabbed Su Bing by the wrist.
"Su Bing," he said urgently, "I need to talk to you. Come with me."
Su Bing’s eyes narrowed. He flung off Xu Sheng’s hand and said coldly, "What kind of boy tugs and pulls like that? Walk ahead—I’ll follow."
Xu Sheng led him to the end of the hallway, stopping at a door he opened gently. The faint scent of traditional herbs floated out.
Su Bing stepped inside and was immediately hit by the smell of medicine. He scanned the room—simple, tidy, with a piece of medical equipment humming quietly by the bed. On the bed lay an old man, silver-haired and gaunt, his cheeks sunken, his face etched with countless lines. He was asleep, his breathing shallow.
The sight made Su Bing’s chest tighten. He didn’t know why, but an inexplicable pressure filled his lungs. Something painful curled in his throat.
He turned to Xu Sheng and asked in a low voice, "Who is this?"
