Chapter 1090: My Husband and Children
Editor: EndlessFantasy Translation
A few days passed in the blink of an eye, and before anyone could catch their breath, the much-anticipated registration day arrived.
Gu Zi was up at the crack of dawn, diligently washing up and putting herself together with extra care. It was her first day reporting to university, and she was determined to make a stellar first impression.
Although Su Shen had promised to drive her, his car hadn’t yet arrived in the capital. The best-case scenario? They’d have to hail a cab from the roadside, or worse—cram onto a crowded public bus.
It was registration day after all, and if the streets were too packed to catch a ride, it would be a complete mess. So she made sure to be early.
Yet, to her surprise, just as she stepped out of the alley with all three children in tow—breakfast eaten and spirits high—there, parked elegantly at the end of the lane, was a sleek little sedan.
Su Shen strode over and, with an exaggerated gentlemanly flair, opened the door. "Miss Gu," he said with a teasing smile. "Your carriage awaits."
Gu Zi couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow as she ushered the kids into the car. "Don’t tell me you bought another car here? I distinctly remember you saying you’d have the old one shipped over."
Su Shen started the engine, steering them effortlessly onto the road. "Please, I still have a wife and three kids to feed. I wouldn’t dare splurge. This one’s rented—for a few days at least."
Gu Zi gave his arm a playful pinch. Look at this middle-aged man learning how to crack jokes. Amused, she leaned back in her seat.
The car soon merged onto the main boulevard, flanked on either side by towering ginkgo trees whose golden leaves framed the avenue like a scene out of a film.
Bicycles whizzed past them in waves, painting a very specific picture of the times—a landscape that, in the future, would disappear when bicycles were no longer allowed on main roads. For now, though, the nostalgia was sweet, and Gu Zi’s mood brightened.
Su Shen, who already seemed to know the route well, had them at the university gate in no time. As she stepped out of the car with Su Le in her arms, she turned to the two older boys still sitting stiffly inside.
"Come on, aren’t you curious to see the university your mother’s going to attend?" she coaxed.
Su Bing and Su Li exchanged a glance and gently shook their heads. "It’s okay, Mommy. We’ll stay in the car with Little Sister. We’ll wait for you."
Of course, they wanted to go with her. But the thought lingered: what if someone asked who they were? She looked so young—too young, perhaps—for two such big boys to call her ’Mom.’ They didn’t want to put her in an awkward position.
Gu Zi looked at their silent expressions and understood everything.
Truthfully, it had been her idea to bring the kids along today. She figured, if they were going to live here long-term, there was no point in hiding. Better to show up with her husband and kids now than have rumors spiral out of control later. After all, she wasn’t the only married student with children in this era. There was nothing shameful about it.
She looked at her sons and said firmly, "No. I want my classmates to see that I have a family—a husband and children I’m proud of. Su Bing, Su Li, are you really not going to support your mother on her big day?"
Hearing that, Su Shen’s heart turned warm and mushy like melting marshmallows. He gently took Su Le from her arms and said to the boys, "Come on, don’t hold your mom up. Let’s go."
At the school gate, lines of bright-eyed student volunteers—young men and women with red armbands stamped with bold white characters reading Volunteer—stood at attention, greeting every newcomer with unbridled enthusiasm and guiding them inside for check-in.
Gu Zi was quietly touched. Who knew these little rituals had such deep roots?
As the family walked toward the gate, their unconventional group drew curious stares.
But Gu Zi didn’t flinch. She calmly reached for Su Shen’s hand and held it with intention, and in that moment, all the watchers understood: they were a couple.
And just like that, the strangeness melted away. In this day and age, married students with kids weren’t exactly rare—but it was the youth of this particular student that turned heads.
A male and female student approached them.
"Hi there, junior!" the girl said brightly. "Welcome to Imperial Capital University! We’ll take you inside to register."
Gu Zi nodded graciously. "Thank you both. This is my first time here, and my husband and children would like to take a look as well. Would it be alright if they came with me?"
The male student blinked, visibly caught off guard. He had been entertaining the hope that the older man might be Gu Zi’s older brother, or maybe even her guardian—but no. She had just introduced him as her husband.
Dreams shattered, he stammered, "Um... Junior, you’re so young. Married already?"
Gu Zi remained composed. "I hope I didn’t frighten you. We got married last year. The children are his from before—he adopted them. But I married him, so they’re my children now. Would you kindly lead the way?"
The student wiped imaginary sweat from his brow. ’She’s even a stepmother?!’ he thought. ’What a pity—such a catch, yet clearly something must’ve gone terribly wrong for her to make that choice.’
Still, he composed himself and led the way with efficient professionalism.
The registration was a breeze. Papers were signed, information submitted, and soon it was time to be shown her dormitory.
Since it was an all-female dorm, the men weren’t allowed inside, so Gu Zi left Su Shen and the children downstairs.
Thankfully, there was a wide, grassy patch in front of the building—perfect for the kids to run around and wait without getting bored or feeling confined. Everything had worked out far more smoothly than she had dared to hope.
