Chapter 1081: Jiang Nuan Visits

Gu Zi glanced around the room and was immediately struck by the sight of the sofa piled high with her dresses, the vibrant array of skirts, fashionable gowns, and blouses scattered in every direction—too many to count.
And that was after she had already packed several boxes!
’My God, how did I accumulate so many clothes?’ she wondered. She glanced over at Su Shen’s belongings, which seemed to consist of just a single denim backpack, barely half-filled.
She sighed deeply, gathering armfuls of clothes and quickly stuffing them back into the wardrobe. "These clothes are too much to carry. I’m leaving some behind," she muttered, but even after packing twice, the pile on the sofa still loomed large, taunting her.
Her head spun from the sheer quantity of her possessions. The thought of sorting through any more made her feel faint, and she suddenly found herself crawling lazily onto one side of the bed, pulling the covers over herself with a pitiful whine. "I want to sleep. We can deal with this tomorrow."
Su Shen, ever the indulgent partner, chuckled softly. "Alright, sleep then."
Only after she was sound asleep did he rise, quietly tidying up the remaining clothes and packing away a set of new bedding that his mother-in-law had given them—specially made, so they wouldn’t have to buy new sets once they arrived in the capital.
Meanwhile, Su Li had been clinging to Su Bing for the past few nights and was currently sound asleep in his brother’s bed.
Su Bing, however, was still busy packing their things, taking occasional trips downstairs. On his third descent, he heard the doorbell ring and immediately grew alert. Who could possibly be here at this hour?
Grabbing a flashlight, he tiptoed to the door, pausing for a moment before stepping outside. The night air was crisp, and there, standing by the wrought-iron gate, was a girl in her pajamas. She was huddled in on herself, shivering from the cold.
Su Bing’s brow furrowed as he approached. "Jiang Nuan, what are you doing here?"
It wasn’t just that Jiang Nuan had shown up—Su Bing couldn’t understand why she’d come all the way to his house in the middle of the night. Was she not afraid of the dark?
Hastily, he opened the door and ushered her inside. He noticed her lips were turning purple and quickly fetched the small blanket from the sofa—one usually reserved for Su Le’s afternoon naps—and draped it over her.
Jiang Nuan wrapped herself in the blanket, finally beginning to warm up, her thoughts slowly clearing. She had almost forgotten why she was there, but then it clicked. "Su Bing, I just found out tonight that you’re moving to the capital. I’m going to my grandma’s place tomorrow morning, but I wanted to come say goodbye."
Su Bing didn’t need her to explain further. His voice dropped with a trace of reprimand. "So, you snuck out in the middle of the night, walking all the way here from the new district? Jiang Nuan, that was dangerous."
Her head hung low, and she fell silent, too intimidated by Su Bing’s stern tone to speak. A few moments later, he placed a steaming cup of tea in front of her. She looked up, hesitating. "Is this for me?"
Su Bing’s expression softened just a little, sensing her trepidation. "It’s ginger tea. Drink it. I’ll ride you back. If you want to say goodbye to Su Li and Mom, write a letter, and I’ll make sure they get it."
Jiang Nuan gingerly took the cup, her hands still cold, and sipped the warm liquid. The heat spread through her body, a welcome relief. She had expected Su Bing to be cold, but he was surprisingly thoughtful.
After finishing the tea, she smiled softly and said, "I don’t have much to say. Su Bing, please say goodbye to Su Li and Auntie Gu Zi for me. And... thank you for offering to send me home."
Su Bing couldn’t help but think of how similar Jiang Nuan was to Su Li—both of them so naïve, so careless. She had run all the way here in the dead of night to say goodbye, not even thinking about the possibility that everyone might be asleep.
If he hadn’t been awake, this silly girl might have ended up freezing outside. He felt an unexpected ache in his chest, though he couldn’t quite explain why. But he didn’t say anything more.
Once Jiang Nuan seemed warm enough, he grabbed his bike and took her home. Her house, also in the new district, was a small villa, and like most places at this hour, it was locked up tight.
When they reached her house, Su Bing reached for the doorbell, but Jiang Nuan stopped him. "Su Bing, don’t ring the bell. My parents will scold me if they find out I snuck out."
Su Bing stared at her, incredulous. She knew she’d be scolded, yet she still had the nerve to sneak out? On top of that, during the ride back, there had been one particularly dark stretch where Jiang Nuan had clung tightly to his waist. She was clearly scared. Where did she get the courage to run off on her own?
"Then how are you going to get in?" he asked.
Jiang Nuan bit her lip. She walked to the side of the gate and pointed to a small hole in the wall. "I came out through the dog door. I’ll go back the same way."
