Chapter 77: I overreacted

Chapter 77: I overreacted

Yizhou took a step closer, his presence overwhelming. "Am I not?"

Her heartbeat quickened, not out of fear, but frustration. "You can’t just go around threatening every man I talk to."

"Watch me."

"Yizhou!!" Her tone sharpened.

Yizhou finally exhaled, his sharp gaze sweeping across the room, taking in everything he had previously ignored in his blind rage. His eyes landed on the second cat—large, grayish-white, and definitely not Lingquan. That alone was enough to put him on edge.

Another system had taken form, but it wasn’t Qingran’s. That meant only one thing—the boy she was protecting wasn’t just some random kid. He was important.

His jaw tightened as his gaze flicked back to Haoyu, now standing cautiously behind Qingran. Yizhou frowned, something clicking in his mind.

He knew this boy.

Not in this life, but from before.

He had seen him countless times by Qingran’s side in the past, a shadow that never strayed too far. Small, clumsy, always trailing after her like an annoying younger brother.

But that kid had been much shorter, rounder-faced, with wide eyes filled with admiration.

The teenager before him was taller, sharper, and clearly hardened by time.

Realization dawned, and Yizhou sighed, running a hand through his hair. He was still tense, but the suffocating anger eased.

"I am... sorry," he finally admitted, voice low but firm. "I overreacted without looking at the situation properly."

Qingran raised an eyebrow, not expecting that.

Yizhou turned his gaze back to Haoyu, scrutinizing him once more. "I guess he’s that little kid that used to run around you all the time. He’s changed quite a bit, so I didn’t recognize him."

Haoyu stiffened, unsure how to respond.

Yizhou turned back to Qingran, stepping closer, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "I’m sorry," he repeated, quieter this time. "But I won’t take my words back."

Qingran exhaled sharply. "Of course you won’t."

His lips twitched at her sarcasm, but his expression remained serious. "I have no intention of letting any man with intentions get close to you."

She scoffed, crossing her arms. "And what exactly do you define as ’intentions’?"

His eyes darkened. "Anything that isn’t me."

Qingran narrowed her eyes. "That’s some next-level possessiveness, Yizhou."

His lips curved slightly, but there was no humor in his expression. "I don’t think you understand just how deep this goes, Qingran."

His hand lifted, fingers brushing against her cheek before sliding down to her jaw. "I don’t just want you—I need you. And I don’t share."

Haoyu, who had been trying his best to stay quiet, finally huffed. "You’re being dramatic."

Yizhou’s gaze flicked to him, unamused. "And you’re still standing here."

Haoyu rolled his eyes but wisely took a step back. "I’m literally fifteen. Do I look like I have any ’intentions’ toward her?"

Yizhou didn’t answer. His attention remained on Qingran, his fingers curling slightly under her chin, tilting her face toward him. "You should have left me a warning," he murmured, his voice dropping to something dangerously soft.

"I walked in and saw another man in your space, and for a moment, I thought—"

His words cut off, but Qingran understood.

For a split second, he had thought she had replaced him.

Her expression softened. "You’re an idiot."

"I’m your idiot." His thumb brushed over her lower lip. "And I meant what I said earlier—I love you, Qingran. No man will ever love you the way I do." His voice dropped to a whisper. "I refuse to let another man come close to you."

Qingran exhaled, pressing a hand against his chest. "You’re exhausting."

Yizhou’s lips quirked. "But you’re still here."

"...Shut up."

Qingran sighed, stepping back and giving Yizhou a pointed look. "Look, I’m not that lousy. I wouldn’t randomly bring a man into my house without a good reason."

Yizhou’s gaze stayed locked onto hers, his expression unreadable. "That’s not the issue."

"Then what is?"

His jaw clenched. "I walked in and saw another man in your space. It didn’t matter what the reason was—all I saw was someone else too close to you."

She let out a sharp breath, rubbing her temple. "That’s not something you get to kill over."

Yizhou’s brows furrowed, and his grip on her wrist tightened just slightly. "You know I can do that. I can do anything for you. That’s how obsessed I am with you."

Qingran’s stomach twisted at the intensity of his words. She wasn’t surprised—this was Yizhou, after all. But she had to set boundaries, even if he didn’t like them.

She met his gaze head-on. "And I hate that."

His fingers froze against her wrist.

Qingran’s voice didn’t waver as she continued. "You can’t go around killing innocent people. That’s my bare minimum, Yizhou. If you ever crossed that line, I’d hate you for it."

The silence between them was heavy.

Yizhou didn’t look away, didn’t loosen his grip. His entire frame was tense, like he was struggling against something deep inside him.

"...Even if it was for you?" His voice was low, almost dangerous.

"Especially if it was for me."

For a long moment, he just stared at her, his dark eyes unreadable. Then, with a sigh, he finally released her wrist, stepping back. "Fine."

Qingran blinked, a little surprised by how quickly he relented. "Fine?"

"I won’t kill without a good reason," Yizhou clarified, though his tone still held stubbornness. "But you need to understand—I will protect you, no matter what."

She rolled her eyes but didn’t push further. "I figured as much."

Yizhou smirked, though the possessiveness in his gaze never faded. "Good."

Haoyu, who had been watching this entire exchange with barely concealed horror, finally spoke. "So... are we just gonna ignore the part where he casually admitted he’d kill people?"

Qingran shot him a warning glance. "Haoyu."

"What?" He gestured wildly at Yizhou. "Are you hearing this? He just threatened murder! And you’re standing here negotiating like it’s a business deal!"

Yizhou scoffed. "You’re still here?"

Haoyu groaned. "I live here now, apparently. But thanks for making it clear that I’m not welcome."

Qingran sighed, rubbing her temple again. "Enough. No one’s killing anyone, no one’s getting kicked out. Yizhou, calm down. Haoyu, stop panicking. We’re eating dinner."

Yizhou’s expression darkened. "You’re letting him eat with us?"

"Yes, he’s eating with us. You, however, can starve if you don’t behave."

Yizhou’s lips twitched, clearly unimpressed. "You wouldn’t do that to me."

Qingran smirked. "Watch me."
