Rebirth: The Comeback of the Girl -
Chapter 102 Parting in Life and Death
Chapter 102: Chapter 102 Parting in Life and Death
Zhen Yu walked into the room with a calm expression, "Grandma, Grandpa."
Zhen Yan followed her lead, calling out in the exact same way and then stood in the middle of the room.
"You’re here~ Where’s your mom?" Grandpa asked with a smile, as Grandma continued to cough non-stop.
"Mom’s watching the store, she couldn’t get away," Zhen Yu hurriedly spoke before her brother, subtly nudging him with her arm.
"Go ahead and take a seat! It’s been quite a while since you visited~" Grandma finally stopped coughing and gestured towards the chairs against the wall for them to sit.
The siblings sat down as told. Zhen Yu asked with concern, "Grandma, are you still coughing this badly?"
"It’s an old problem, just have to bear with it!" The old lady responded in a bland tone.
With not much to say after years of separation, they chatted awkwardly for a few minutes before Zhen Yu suggested leaving.
"Grandma, Grandpa, my brother and I still need to do our homework, we’re heading home now~"
"Go ahead, tell your mom to come visit when she has time."
Zhen Yu made no reply, just nodded slightly and turned to leave, with Zhen Yan quickly following.
How the siblings had entered, that’s how they left.
On the way home, Zhen Yan couldn’t help but think about the ’farewell’ his sister mentioned last night.
"Little sister, didn’t you say you came to say goodbye last night? I didn’t see you say goodbye! And what exactly were you saying goodbye to?"
"If grandma and grandpa become like the Dayang Tree, tell mom to come over tonight," Zhen Yu said.
"Ah?" Zhen Yan was puzzled. "How did you know? They didn’t say anything just now!"
"Don’t worry about it, just accompany mom tomorrow! Tell her to bring less money!" Zhen Yu instructed her brother.
"Why me?" Zhen Yan complained unwillingly.
Zhen Yu teasingly replied, "Because, you’re the big brother!"
Zhen Yan: "..."
He didn’t feel like being the big brother anymore.
-
That night, they told Mrs. Zhen that Grandma had asked for her, and the next day Mrs. Zhen went over early in the morning despite it being a busy weekend, taking Zhen Yan along.
Zhen Yan didn’t get back home until near noon.
He immediately collapsed onto the bed and began to endlessly complain to his sister.
"I mean, why didn’t you go! All morning, they were so critical of me! They were almost ready to kick me out directly!"
Zhen Yu didn’t latch onto her brother’s complaint but first asked where their mother was.
"Mom’s gone to the shop! It’s already taken up her whole morning! The old lady really knows how to nag, she just kept wanting more money. Seeing that mom gave too little, she kept finding excuses not to let her leave."
Zhen Yu understood the nature of their grandma. Even though she married Mrs. Zhen off, she still expected her daughter to transfer all the nice things from her own small family back to her maternal home.
Maybe it’s because she’s too cunning, that’s why Grandma is barely five feet tall.
According to the locals, it’s because she lets her craftiness weigh her down~
This ’petite’ old lady focused solely on making Mrs. Zhen into the ’ultimate brother-supporting demon’, and because of this, Mr. Zhen had no shortage of arguments with Mrs. Zhen over the years.
But that’s where it ended.
After Grandpa Zhen had repeatedly ’harassed’ and ’brainwashed’ Zhen Yan, Zhen Yu had gained some insights.
If there’s a new change in brother’s life, then what about mother?
Her ’extreme’ grandma and six brothers, how could they let go of her, the ’easy mark’?
So, the road ahead is long and winding, she must seek relentlessly...
At the end of November on a Tuesday, as soon as they returned home from school, the siblings standing at the entrance of the courtyard saw the warm yellow light shining through from inside the house.
"Why did Mom come back so early today?" Zhen Yan was somewhat puzzled as he opened the gate.
"Go inside and you’ll see." Although Zhen Yu already had a guess, she didn’t spell it out.
Upon entering the living room, indeed, there was Second Uncle Cheng sitting on the edge of the large kang; a pale, slightly chubby middle-aged man.
"My dear nephew is back! Haha!" Second Uncle Cheng said cheerily, not mentioning Zhen Yu at all.
Zhen Yu didn’t mind; over the years, both past and present, she had grown used to it.
"Second Uncle," Zhen Yan said in a flat tone, which Second Uncle Cheng didn’t mind and turned back to continue talking with Mrs. Zhen.
The siblings went into the inner room to put down their schoolbags, and then returned to sit in the living room.
Seeing her children come out, Mrs. Zhen stood up and said, "Chat with your Second Uncle, Mom will go cook."
Zhen Yu stood up as well, "I’ll help you."
Zhen Yan gave his sister a glare; again, left with the Cheng bunch, what was he supposed to talk about with him? What was there to talk about?
As if she didn’t see, Zhen Yu followed Mrs. Zhen into the kitchen.
-
Let’s not mention how awkwardly the uncle and nephew were conversing inside the house; the mother and daughter weren’t idle in the kitchen either.
"Your Second Uncle is here to pick up your grandma and grandpa to take them to Dayang Tree. It seems there is still a filial son after all! Quite rare indeed," Mrs. Zhen explained the purpose of Second Uncle Cheng’s visit, taking the opportunity to sigh.
Whether it was filial or not, Zhen Yu didn’t comment, only asking, "Have they decided when to leave?"
"The day after tomorrow! The train on the 30th, Mom will go help your grandma pack the things tomorrow."
"What about the house?"
"He said to have your Uncle arrange to sell it," Mrs. Zhen said nonchalantly.
Zhen Yu pursed her lips, "If possible, advise grandma to not sell it yet."
Mrs. Zhen glanced sideways, "Not sell yet? What’s it for, then?"
Zhen Yu looked up, meeting her mother’s eyes, "To leave a way out for herself."
Mrs. Zhen frowned, silent for a while, and half-doubtingly asked her daughter, "You think he’s unreliable?"
As she spoke, Mrs. Zhen motioned with her lips towards the living room.
Zhen Yu didn’t answer directly but subtly guided how her mother should persuade grandma, "Tell Grandpa not to be too impulsive, waiting a year or two more to sell isn’t too late!"
Mrs. Zhen didn’t say anything, continuing to wash and chop vegetables while mulling over quietly.
-
Second Uncle Cheng left after having dinner, having arranged to meet Mrs. Zhen at grandma’s house the next day.
Since the elderly couple were moving to Dayang Tree for their elder care, they had to bring almost everything with them, turning the packing into a big project, naturally, Second Uncle Cheng had to rely on Mrs. Zhen’s help.
Zhen Yu didn’t stop him, after all, those were Mrs. Zhen’s parents, one of whom would soon pass away.
It wasn’t that Zhen Yu didn’t want to save someone, but she lacked the ability as her system could only make subtle changes at this point.
Moreover, Grandpa’s passing was not accidental but due to illness, and for someone over eighty, his longevity was considered quite good in the area, even his death would be termed a ’joyful mourning’.
So, Zhen Yu just quietly observed the situation unfold, detached and indifferent.
-
The 30th was a Thursday, and both Zhen Yan and Zhen Yu had school, naturally, they couldn’t go to the station to see them off.
After returning home that evening, Mrs. Zhen had already prepared dinner, sitting alone on the kang edge in the living room, lost in thought.
"Mom~ What are you thinking about?" After putting away her schoolbag, Zhen Yu returned to the living room and called out to her mother.
"Ah? Oh..." Mrs. Zhen came back to reality, seeing it was her daughter in front, "School’s over, huh~ The food is in the pot,"
"I’ll serve it!" Zhen Yan immediately responded and went to the kitchen.
"Mom?" Zhen Yu still stood in front of her mother, her tone puzzled.
