Chapter 1013: Chapter 1014: Bite Me If You Mess Around
Chiang Xiao pulled over a candy-shaped pillow, trying to wedge it between the two. "Just sleep holding this."
Meng Xinian couldn’t help but laugh and cry; he pulled the pillow over and tossed it aside.
"I’m not comfortable that way." He pulled her back into his arms, "There we go, be good, I promise I won’t let my hands wander."
"Are you sure?"
"Positive. If I make a move, you bite me."
"Pfft." Chiang Xiao couldn’t help but laugh. Bite him? With his thick skin and flesh, she probably wouldn’t even make a dent!
And besides, if he really did want to do something, what good would biting him do?
However, her laughter did manage to dissipate the tense atmosphere that was on the verge of boiling over.
"Sleepy? Should we just chat?"
Meng Xinian usually wasn’t much of a talker, but after being apart from Chiang Xiao for a while, he found himself really wanting to talk to her, even if it was just pointless chatter. If he didn’t talk, just listening to her was good enough.
Chiang Xiao had been roused awake by all the commotion and couldn’t fall asleep for the time being, so she propped her head up in his arms, "Tell me about your mission in the snow mountains? Was it dangerous?"
"The mission was tedious, nothing much to talk about. The snow mountains are stunning at first glance, quite breathtaking, but after a few days there, it starts to feel monotonous. There were some dangers, like frostbite and avalanches, but being careful, there wasn’t much of an issue."
He spoke so lightly of it, but Chiang Xiao could imagine that it must have been tough on the snow mountains. Yet, she didn’t smell any blood or medicine on him, so he probably wasn’t injured.
As for checking him for injuries herself, she wouldn’t dare do so at that moment—for fear that if she didn’t find any wounds, he might not be able to resist "examining" her all over, leaving her truly crying without tears.
"I saw the newspaper, about the Siyang Village Hundred Bone Mountain Tomb."
He hadn’t even looked for Zhao Xin yet after getting back; he had come straight to her.
Chiang Xiao sat up with a jolt upon hearing him mention it and looked at him, "I was planning on telling you about that."
If she didn’t tell him, he would find out eventually. Zhao Xin certainly wouldn’t keep it from him, and Kuang Yunxian would most likely mention something too.
Meng Xinian propped his head on his arms, looking at her, "Hmm?"
He had suspected that this matter would be related to her.
"At the end of last year, I bumped into a man in Xinhua Bookstore. His book fell to the ground, and I noticed it was a local history book of Huaming County. I was curious; I didn’t expect our county to have such books, so I thought about flipping through it too, to see what it was all about."
She started telling him about the encounter with Cui Dayuan from back then. Of course, she didn’t mention the part about her grandfather, just that after Cui Dayuan bought that book, she went to the same shelf and saw there was only one left, which to her surprise had several pages torn out.
This piqued her curiosity even more, so she went looking for that book and finally found it with He Jin, which turned out to be about Hundred Bone Mountain of Siyang Village.
"And then you had someone keep tabs on them? You even went back to the village during the Spring Festival to keep an eye on them?" Meng Xinian found it rather incredible.
Was her curiosity really that strong?
For the sake of a county annal, she ended up watching a group of tomb raiders?
Chiang Xiao nodded seriously, "I am a righteous young lady!"
Meng Xinian: "..."
A righteous young lady?
He sat up and stretched out his hand to pinch her cheek, "Alright, righteous young lady, knowing they were up to no good, you still watched them move into your granduncle’s house?"
