Chapter 825: Chapter 825: Disfigurement
“Xiao Taohong is truly remarkable,” Xuexue praised half-heartedly before closing her eyes and immediately beginning to snore, feigning sleep.
“Eh! That’s it? It’s over just like that?”
Xiao Taohong, floating mid-air, was dumbstruck. She had thought she’d be able to score a good ten or eight pounds of candles to keep her mouth entertained, but to her surprise, Xuexue fell asleep so quickly.
Xiao Taohong descended to the ground wearily and, watching the deeply sleeping Xuexue snoring away, muttered disdainfully, “Sleeping like this, such a sight. It worries me that she might never find someone to marry her.”
After saying that, she shook her head, turned around, and walked straight through the wall and disappeared.
The moment Xiao Taohong’s figure vanished,
The snoring Xuexue suddenly opened her eyes, a faint smile gracing her lips. She hugged the quilt, turned over to find a more comfortable position, and continued sleeping.
Peacock Court
After returning to her courtyard, Situtu Qinger lashed out at Mei Hua.
“You damn servant, were you trying to make me look foolish on purpose? How dare you say that little cheap person has left the General’s Mansion?”
Mei Hua trembled with fear, dropping to her knees with a thump, knocking her head on the floor, and said, “Second Miss, I truly didn’t know what happened. While I was in the kitchen, I indeed heard the maid of the eldest miss speaking of it.”
“I see you’re a fool! She set a trap, and you eagerly jumped right into it. It’s one thing to be stupid yourself, but to drag me along with you, it seems you’re tired of living.”
Situtu Qinger was furious. She had thought that with this event, she could pave the way for her mother to return to the General’s Mansion smoothly. Instead, it was a joyful hope turned to dust, which annoyed her greatly.
“Please spare me, Miss. I realize my mistake, and I will never dare to speak recklessly again.”
“Get out!”
Situtu Qinger picked up the teacup from the table and violently smashed it to the floor.
Upon hearing the command, Mei Hua felt as if she’d been pardoned and scrambled up, bowing as she retreated out.
“Useless thing, can’t even handle a minor task properly,” Situtu Qinger huffed with anger.
Orchid lifted her head to sneak a peek at her and cautiously said, “Second Miss, since we have not suffered any loss, please don’t be angry; it’s not worth harming your health.”
“That Mei Hua, that dog of a servant, has become more and more outrageous,”
“It was but an unintentional mistake, Second Miss. You have a generous heart, so please don’t hold it against her.”
“That dead girl, I wonder if she holds a grudge against me for ruining her face last time and is doing this out of spite,” Situtu Qinger thought of this and found it more and more plausible.
Orchid was inwardly shocked, wondering why the Second Miss suddenly brought this up. She needed to handle the situation carefully or Mei Hua would definitely be doomed. So, she quickly said, “Second Miss, Mei Hua is wholeheartedly loyal to you and would absolutely bear no resentment.”
“Hmph! Hard to say. That girl had big ambitions! She was hoping to change her fate with her good looks, now that she’s been disfigured by me, wouldn’t she hold a grudge?” Situtu Qinger expressed doubt.
“The lives of us servants all belong to the Second Miss; how would being disfigured matter?”
“Do you really think that way?” Situtu Qinger eyed Orchid with sharp scrutiny.
“Yes.” Orchid lowered her head, her demeanor submissive.
Ever since Auntie Tang’s incident, the Second Miss had become increasingly suspicious, hardly trusting even these maids who were close to her; their days were becoming harder and harder.
Situtu Qinger retracted her gaze, “You may think this way, but you cannot guarantee others feel the same.”
Orchid looked up, hastily responding, “I am with them day and night; I know what they are thinking. They are indeed utterly loyal to the Second Miss.”
Situtu Qinger finally felt her anger subsiding, “It’s late. You may go rest. I’m tired as well. We will discuss anything else tomorrow.”
