She wouldn’t be foolish enough to walk around with that smell all over her, and even though we don’t have drug-sniffing dogs here, a person as cautious as her wouldn’t give people a handle against her.”
“Then why is ‘Beautiful Lady’ so nervous about her scent?”
Mario Yuno’s gaze was profound, “You are now an external support for my Old Unit, aren’t you?”
“Yes, and they’re not even paying me.” Kiara had decided to help Mario Yuno this way the last time she asked someone for help.
“Good, then it’s not leaking secrets when I talk to you.”
Kiara knew, seeing him so serious, that Mario Yuno might have something important to say, so she concentrated as well.
“Why did ‘Beautiful Lady’ come to our home?” Mario Yuno asked.
“You said it yourself, its handler was killed right in front of it, it was traumatized and couldn’t serve anymore–ah!” Kiara realized and covered her mouth in shock.
“Could it be that Grace Bradford–”
No way?
If that’s the case, then it’s too coincidental!
“Even though it would be premature to lock onto this conclusion based on these clues alone, the logic is still conceivable. ‘Beautiful Lady’s reaction to that smell should be to sit down, but it barked like mad when it smelled what you brought home. Daughter-in-law, as a husband, I hope you can back out of this matter. Don’t get involved with this dangerous woman.”
Mario Yuno hadn’t expected such a small clue to lead to such a massive speculation.
But until things became clear, he had no choice but to be more vigilant. This was too different from their previous speculations–a junkie versus someone selling the stuff, possibly the villain who killed ‘Beautiful Lady’s handler; they weren’t on the same level.
Kiara and Mario Yuno’s communications were mostly straightforward, except for the time Kiara deliberately withheld something to avoid upsetting him. Most of the time, they laid their problems out in the open, which had to do with both their IQ and their trust in each other.
“Camden, you think this way from a husband’s perspective, but what about from a professional angle?”
Kiara met his gaze, and Mario Yuno sighed.
“Why do you have to be so smart?”
“Actually, the ancients have already shown us the way. When reason and emotion collide, the best solution is–” Kiara exchanged a look with him, then took a coin from her pocket.
“Draw lots.”
“…Which genius came up with that?”
“Never mind the details! Heads, I continue; tails, I back out.” After saying this, Kiara tossed the coin, and both their eyes followed it as it flew.
Strangely enough, given the arc with which Kiara tossed it, the coin should have landed on the bedsheet. Yet, it spun in the air, and when it landed, it bounced on the quilt and rolled into the crevice between the bed and the wall, where no hand could reach.
Mario Yuno tried to bend over to see which side it had landed on, but Kiara tugged at him.
“It seems we have a Schrodinger’s Coin now, and God seems to be letting me follow my heart.”
“Why do you always like doing risky things? Why can’t you just be a good pregnant woman staying at home?” Mario Yuno was exasperated.
He understood her implication all too well, a roundabout way of saying she wanted to proceed.
“Our ancestors survived through a series of risks. In primitive societies, the young explored the unknown while the elder tribal chiefs guarded their territory. When the young achieved more resources through their adventures, they’d kill the chiefs and take their place, continuing this cycle. So, the human genome inherently carries a risk-taking cell. If a person likes excitement and risks, it means they’re still young. When a person loses their drive for exploration and just wants to guard their turf, it shows they’ve grown old.”
“Why do I feel like you’re getting younger by the day? When I first met you, you didn’t seem like this,” Mario Yuno refused to admit that his daughter-in-law had convinced him with her knowledge.
“That’s because back then I didn’t have a capable husband. When I was alone, I could only do so much with my limited abilities. Now that I have a husband who complements me so well, knowing that our combined strength is even greater, why wouldn’t I do more? With you by my side! God gave us a couple such high IQs, not to have us guard a small territory and live a mundane 9-to-5 life, right?”
Quack! Mario Yuno felt like the frog in his heart had been fed a bowl of strong liquor by his daughter-in-law. What bliss!
She understood him so well, always knew how to stroke his ego. His resolve was crumbling with her words.
In truth, he knew if Kiara backed out now, he’d never find someone else who could get as close to Grace Bradford. And the vendetta for ‘Beautiful Lady’s handler might be left unresolved. How could he be content with that?
“I’ve always made decisions after careful thought. I believe in my ability and I trust yours. With us working together, our chance of success is 90%. Why not try?”
Mario Yuno looked intently at Kiara for more than a minute before making a cautious decision.
“Wait until I devise a meticulous plan and ensure your absolute safety, then we’ll proceed.”
In other words, if he couldn’t figure it out, she shouldn’t participate.
Kiara wasn’t worried about his intellect or his ability to strategize–they had her utmost confidence. Seeing Mario Yuno stand up to leave, she asked,
“Where are you going?”
“To make some coffee outside.”
“Oh, have you been feeling frustrated these days? Since we’ve been sleeping separately and you can’t smoke or drink, is coffee the only way to boost your brainpower now?”
“Um… yes.”
“Then turn around. I have a better way to wake you up than coffee.”
…Much later, Mario Yuno lay looking at the ceiling, thinking how wonderful the world was. Kiara, wiping her hands with a tissue, gazed at him.
“Got any ideas?” She had gone to quite some lengths to provide him with inspiration.
“Yes, I’m brimming with thoughts. It even reminds me of a saying.”
Kiara listened attentively, watching as Mario Yuno, with a profound and distant expression, said,
“It brings to mind ‘Dream of Red Mansion’ where Robin Grutt agonizes over his unrequited love for Wang Xifeng. Cao Xueqin used such a reserved description–it truly makes me admire the greatness of our traditional culture. Of course, my wife is even greater!”
“…” So, while you’re here relishing endlessly, is this what comes to mind?
