Grace Little Phoenix Bradford, the daughter of Kiara’s patient, got out of the car and called for Kiara.
Upon seeing her, Kiara recognized Grace. Her father, Old Father Jackson, had been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and Kiara had been providing him with psychological comfort and palliative care for some time. Grace was very satisfied with Kiara’s treatment and had recently sent her ginseng, which was the one that Kiara almost consumed but was ultimately saved by Mario Yuno.
“Dr. Clark!” Grace exclaimed as she got out of the car, looking pleasantly surprised to see Kiara.
“Elizabeth Mu, what a coincidence,” Kiara instantly knew why she was there.
As expected, upon seeing Kiara, Grace directed her driver and bodyguard to start carrying things out of the car.
“I heard you’ve been resting up for the baby lately. I wanted to come by and see how you were doing. How has your health been?” Elizabeth asked.
“I’m doing well; it has stabilized. You’re too kind, bringing things with you like this,” Kiara said, fearing this very situation.
“Ah, Old Father Jackson has been mentioning you, wanting to see you these past few days. Ever since you started visiting our home, his health has seen improvements day by day. His time is limited, and he particularly trusts only you. I thought–”
Kiara understood and nodded. “Elizabeth, you can rest assured. Although I’ve announced that I won’t take on any new cases for the next three months, I consider your case an ongoing one. I won’t abandon it halfway, nor will I let someone else take over Uncle Mu Wilson’s treatment. Our sessions this week will continue as planned.”
She was a very responsible doctor; since she had already accepted money, there was absolutely no question of her walking away from her duty.
Relieved by these words, Elizabeth knew that Kiara wouldn’t be taking any new cases for the next three months and was worried that her father might be left without a suitable psychologist. She had hurried over to check, feeling that a mere phone call wouldn’t be sincere enough, so she personally brought gifts instead.
“Hearing you say that puts my mind at ease. Dr. Clark, you’re truly remarkable. Ever since you started treating my father, his health has been improving daily. I know his illness is incurable, but any extra days we can get with him brings us children some peace of mind. Please accept these items as a token of our gratitude.”
Elizabeth knew it was a bit difficult to ask Kiara to continue the treatment for her father while pregnant; this was Kiara’s first child, and her family placed great importance on it, but her father really couldn’t change doctors now, not with such a serious illness.
“There’s no need for the items; treating people is my duty, and this is all part of the job. Please take back the gifts. I promise to support the old man through his final days,” Kiara said.
While Kiara was chatting with Grace, Mother Yuno, not wanting to interrupt Kiara, gestured to her classmate to get the Beautiful Lady into the car.
But the Beautiful Lady, for some reason, became very restless the moment Grace got out of the car. Mother Yuno hadn’t noticed its unusual behavior, thinking that the Beautiful Lady just didn’t want to leave Kiara, so she and her classmate forcefully got the dog into the car.
The moment the car door closed, the Beautiful Lady suddenly began to bark frantically towards Kiara, trying to crash against the door, attempting to get off the car.
“Oh, good doggy, don’t be scared. I will take good care of you, and we have a little girl at home; you two will surely play well together.” Mother Yuno’s friend patted the Beautiful Lady, only to be met with even more vigorous barking.
It scratched at the car door desperately and even head-butted it, all the while crying out loudly, but the car was driving further away.
Kiara heard its cries, her tears almost falling; she was so reluctant to let it go.
She thought the Beautiful Lady was just reluctant to leave home, so it was barking. Even the smart Mrs. Kiara couldn’t imagine that what the dog was actually trying to do was warn her. But however smart a dog might be, it cannot speak, and no one understood what it was really trying to convey.
“Dr. Clark, is that your dog?” Elizabeth asked.
Kiara nodded.
“Yeah, I’m on bed rest to protect the pregnancy so I can’t keep dogs right now. I’ve had someone else take care of it for me.”
Elizabeth Bradford saw her watery eyes and consoled her, “Dr. Clark, don’t be upset. Dogs are all very perceptive. Once you’re able to, bring it back home, and it will still recognize you.”
“Do you like keeping dogs too, Elizabeth Mu?” Kiara didn’t want people to see through her reluctance to part, so she changed the subject. She noticed that Elizabeth Mu kept using the word ‘canine’ instead of ‘dog’, which, according to Mario Yuno’s explanation, was characteristic of someone fond of dogs.
“Actually, I don’t keep them. In fact, you might say they’ve caused me quite a bit of trouble, but, well, I’m someone who respects an adversary,” Elizabeth Mu said, looking into the distance as if reminiscing about something.
Some people are naturally afraid of dogs, and Kiara assumed Elizabeth Mu to be one of them. Without delving deeper, she exchanged a few pleasantries before parting ways and following her Abigail Nana back home.
Without Beautiful Lady around, it felt like something was missing from the home. Saddened, Kiara sat on the sofa hugging a pillow in a daze. Kiara’s mother and Mother Yuno went into the kitchen together to make something for her to eat, while Arlong came over to chat with Kiara.
“Sis, do you really feel like crying? You can cry to me.”
Kiara smacked his face with the pillow, “Why don’t you go lie down? Be careful or you’ll end up with a limp, and then I’ll get you a crutch to make you into Iron-crutch Russel!”
“Heh heh, if I’m missing anything, then I’d be Iron-crutch Chen.”
Arlong was trying to distract her, so she wouldn’t keep thinking about Beautiful Lady, but after chatting for a while, Kiara’s mood darkened again.
“Sis, what’s wrong?”
“Talking about Iron-crutch Russel makes me think of Beautiful Lady.”
“…You can make that connection?!” He’d gone to all that effort specifically to prevent her from thinking about the dog, and here she was, back at it again.
“Isn’t Iron-crutch Russel one of the Eight Immortals? Lu Dongbin is also one of them, right? There’s that saying, ‘A dog bites Lu Dongbin, unware of a good heart.’
Feeling defeated, Arlong banged his head against the pillow, “I give up, how do you make these leaps?!”
Was his sister really that clever, or were the imaginations of pregnant women just that expansive?
“Sometimes when it was around, it felt annoying, but now that it’s gone, my heart aches. Habit is indeed a terrifying thing.” Every time Kiara thought of Beautiful Lady looking at her when it left, she felt a pang of reluctance.
“If you miss it that much, then bring it back! I just sneaked online to check, and it’s not like pregnant women absolutely can’t keep dogs. Later, we can have my brother-in-law take Beautiful Lady for blood tests and check for parasites, right? Our mom and your Abigail Nana can’t always be there for you. As soon as these two old ladies leave, you bring it back,” Arlong persuaded.
Arlong’s words hit home for Kiara, and she went from tears to laughter.
Kiara’s mother came out with fruits and, hearing her son joking around with her daughter, grabbed a banana and threw it at Arlong’s head.
“Mom, what are you doing? I’m still a patient!” Arlong complained.
“You’ve hurt your leg, but your brain is fine. What are you doing telling your sister all this nonsense? If you dare go on, I’ll cripple your other leg too, send you straight home from your workplace organisation, and you can beg under the Lower Sky Bridge with a broken bowl!”
Arlong didn’t dare speak anymore. Menopausal women were too frightening.
