Chapter 542: Apocalypse: The True Daughter Turns to Ashes (13)
Ever since Luo Ning left, whether it was the impact of her words that day or the fact that blood relations are indeed different.
Luo Baomiao found that Father Luo, Mother Luo, and her brothers’ attitudes towards Luo Ning had changed quite a bit, and they even felt a bit guilty, which gave her a sense of crisis.
So she started to cozy up to the members of the Luo Family, gradually shifting their focus from Luo Ning’s departure back onto herself.
After contacting their maternal family at Kyoto Base, the family decided to head north and seek refuge there tomorrow, which secretly pleased Luo Baomiao.
Luo Ning would probably no longer come to disrupt her life from now on.
Who would have thought that today, this woman would show up on her own?
Luo Baomiao was annoyed but had to put on a happy face; after all, she had to rely on the Luo Family to survive and couldn’t let them know she disliked Luo Ning.
Father Luo gave Eldest Luo a look, "You brothers go and bring Luo Ning back home."
As the elders, he and Mother Luo naturally couldn’t lower their dignity and face to personally invite Luo Ning back.
Especially after that last noisy break when they severed their relationship, they had lost face.
Particularly, the daughter of the Long Family had deliberately spread the news that Third Luo had intentionally left his own sister on the roadside in the middle of the night and that Luo Ning had taken the initiative to sever ties with the Luo Family.
Other families would occasionally ask him how he could sever the relationship with his own flesh and blood after having taken her back for over a year.
He felt as if he had lost all his dignity, and as a result, he felt not only guilty towards Luo Ning but also somewhat angry at her.
Mother Luo felt similarly complex.
Eldest Luo knew his parents’ thoughts and nodded, "Okay!"
After Father Luo and Mother Luo turned and entered the house, he led Second Luo out of the courtyard gate.
Third Luo and Fifth Luo followed them.
Luo Baomiao thought for a moment and then trailed behind them.
In the car, Luo Ning saw the Luo Brothers appear and guessed that someone at the door had given the Luo Family a message.
Although mobile phones and internet terminals were no longer useful, the military had issued walkie-talkies to every surviving household.
Eldest Luo walked up to the car, and only then did Luo Ning roll down the window.
"Is there something you need?" she asked.
Eldest Luo was just about to speak when Third Luo preemptively said, "You sure have grown a big temper, haven’t you? Since you’ve come back, can’t you go home on your own? Do we really have to come and invite you?"
"And when you left before, didn’t you make a big scene about never coming back home? Now you’ve decided to show up?"
He had been holding back his frustration and couldn’t resist the urge to throw in a bit of sarcasm.
He believed Luo Ning had come back to the Luo Family because she had no choice due to the apocalypse.
Even if he was impatient and sarcastic with this sister, like he used to be, she wouldn’t react.
Luo Ning lifted a hand and rested her head against it on the steering wheel, her entire demeanor exuded a casual, lazy vibe.
"I never said I wanted to go back home! You might be misunderstanding something?"
Third Luo chuckled with disbelief, "Keep pretending."
"If you’re not here to go home, why would you be parked here in your car?"
Luo Ning spoke the truth, "I’m waiting for someone here."
Third Luo didn’t believe her, "Stop making excuses and putting on an act."
"You must have rushed over because you know we’re leaving City S tomorrow for the Kyoto Base."
Then he showed a somewhat condescending air, "Mom and Dad are still allowing you to come back, willing to let bygones be bygones and take you to Kyoto Base with us. You should just be quietly thrilled."
Luo Ning slightly furrowed her brows, "Do you not understand human speech?"
"I don’t care whether you go to the Kyoto Base or not, it has nothing to do with me. Since I said I wouldn’t go back home, naturally, I will keep my promise. You don’t need to make these snide remarks here."
This scumbag brother always had the sharpest tongue.
The most sarcastic and disdainful towards her original self was none other than him.
Third Luo didn’t expect Luo Ning, despite having come here herself, would stubbornly claim she wouldn’t step inside the house.
He crossed his arms and sneered, "Now you’re putting on quite the show. Well, I’ll just wait to see how you end up slapping your own face, begging to come back home."
These words were rather harsh, and Eldest Luo shot Third Luo a warning glance. "Third, shut up."
He then turned his head to speak to Luo Ning, "Mom and Dad know you’re back and are pretty happy about it. They sent us to pick you up and take you home."
He didn’t have many interactions with this younger sister, so his feelings for her were not strong.
Compared to Luo Baomiao, he was indeed somewhat indifferent towards Luo Ning.
But no matter what, she was still his sister, and since she had taken the initiative to come back, it wouldn’t be right to just ignore her.
"Thanks, but no need, I’m really here waiting for someone," said Luo Ning as she looked at the handsome Eldest Luo.
This one had never bullied or insulted her original self, but his attitude had always been distant and detached.
And then there was Second Luo, whose coldness towards her was almost the same.
If it were just a matter of personality, the original Luo Ning would not have been so upset.
But while the two brothers were not as doting and close to Luo Baomiao as Third Luo and Fifth Luo were, when they saw her, they would show a protective smile as if they were with their younger sister, and they often brought little gifts back for Luo Baomiao.
They also sometimes brought small gifts for the original Luo Ning, but a comparison would reveal that the gifts for Luo Baomiao were thoughtful and something she liked.
On the other hand, the gifts for the original Luo Ning, though not cheap, were clearly the kind bought by an assistant or secretary without much care.
The original Luo Ning had always been baffled; she didn’t really envy or resent how well the family treated Luo Baomiao.
She didn’t hope for them to treat her the same way they treated Luo Baomiao.
But they were blood relatives to her, couldn’t they spare a bit of genuine brotherly affection for her?
After the original Luo Ning came back home, she also tried to please the eldest and second brothers.
But the looks they gave her, in addition to being indifferent, contained a kind of contempt that made the original Luo Ning feel shamefully unwelcome, as if she was flattering them with an ulterior motive they simply could not respect.
With the deliberate estrangement from the brothers, the original Luo Ning stopped trying to ingratiate herself with them.
However, whenever they were around, the original Luo Ning would prepare food they liked, and they would eat it.
Eldest Luo frowned, "Luo Ning, there should be a limit to this act. Now with the apocalypse upon us, the family needs to be busy preparing for the move to the Kyoto Base. Let’s leave it at that."
He and Third Luo shared the same thought — Luo Ning was just putting on a show.
Second Luo also said, "Luo Ning, we were at fault for what happened in the past, okay? Let’s stop this nonsense, we still have a lot to deal with."
Luo Ning was speechless at their attitude, still acting superior and as if doing her a favor.
In their eyes, her not going home was a scene, and their coming to pick her up, as if bestowing upon her a great honor.
She replied coolly, "I’m not causing a scene, and I’m not posturing. I have nothing to do with you anymore, and I am not going back."
"And don’t speak so insincerely and carelessly. What do you mean the things from the past were your fault and let’s leave it at that?"
"I indeed left home because of your cold violence and rejection, that’s the simple truth. Don’t twist it as if you are the ones who are wronged."
"I’ll say it one last time; I’m here waiting for someone. Don’t bother me."
Her impatient and still defiant attitude angered the Luo Brothers.
"Just keep being stubborn. Waiting for someone, my foot — probably a lie. Make sure not to come begging to be taken back home after a while."
Third Luo sneered and pulled at Eldest Luo’s sleeve.
He added pointedly, "Big Brother, since she’s not here to come home, let’s not insist. Better save ourselves from further sarcasm."
Eldest Luo felt a headache coming on and shared a glance with Second Luo, deciding it was best to leave first and wait for Luo Ning to come back on her own.
As they were about to leave, Luo Ning glanced at the rearview mirror and quickly opened the car door.
They thought to themselves that maybe they had been too lenient, and once they stopped indulging her, she would step out of line.
Sure enough, seeing they wouldn’t pamper her, she compromised and started to get out of the car to go back with them.
Just as Third Luo was about to add another sarcastic comment,
they saw Luo Ning get out of the car and start running towards someone behind them.
They heard her voice, filled with happiness and excitement, endearingly calling out, "Brother!"
They all turned to look in unison.
And they saw Luo Ning throw herself into the arms of the tall and upright man who was approaching from not far away, continuously calling out affectionately and dependently, "Brother! Brother!"
This was a side of her they had never seen before, nor had they ever heard her call them that way. At that moment, their hearts couldn’t help but sour involuntarily.
