Chapter 574: Seeking Help 2

Chapter 574: Chapter 574: Seeking Help 2

Li Shiping indeed was so scared that she went weak all over. She let go and her emotions became somewhat calmer than before. "Mianmian, touch her, is she burning hot? I’ve been calling her for a long time, and she hasn’t responded at all. Usually, she’s a light sleeper and would wake up at the slightest noise."

Shen Mianmian touched the child and her little face immediately twisted in concern. "She’s really hot. How could the fever become this bad?"

"She started having a fever yesterday, and I wanted to take her to the hospital, but Dongcheng wouldn’t let me. He said it would be fine just to take some fever medicine. Indeed the fever went down at noon today, and I don’t know how only after being out for the afternoon, I returned to find her burning up like this. Mianmian, she won’t have anything seriously wrong, will she?"

Shen Mianmian pursed her lips. "Sister Shiping, don’t be afraid. We’ll take her to the hospital right now."

As soon as she finished speaking, He Nan came out of the house, holding a jacket. Seeing Shen Mianmian holding the child, he reached out to take her and gave Shen Mianmian his jacket. "Put it on, it’s cold outside."

The night air was cool.

Shen Mianmian was wearing only one layer of clothing and it would be cold outside.

Li Shiping had just returned from outside and hadn’t taken off her jacket. The child had a fever and was burning up, needing to dissipate heat, and shouldn’t wear too much.

"Okay."

Shen Mianmian took the clothes but didn’t have time to put them on. She called out loudly to XiaoCui and the three of them hurried downstairs.

Once in the car, Shen Mianmian sat in the back with the child and Li Shiping, while He Nan drove in silence straight to the hospital.

Hospitals in the 1980s were not like those in the 21st century. At night, aside from the on-duty staff, there were almost no people.

When the duty doctor learned there was a child emergency, he hurried out, glanced at the child, and his expression immediately darkened. "What’s wrong with you guys? Why only bring the child to the hospital after she’s burned up with fever like this?"

"Doctor, please, save my daughter," Li Shiping begged, grabbing the doctor’s arm, somewhat agitated.

"Sister Shiping, let go of the doctor first, let him treat the child," Shen Mianmian urged, quickly pulling Li Shiping away while the doctor and nurses took the child into the emergency room. The two of them waited anxiously outside the door.

He Nan returned from registering and paying, and upon seeing the two huddled pathetically outside the emergency room, he frowned.

Outside the emergency room, there was silence, the breathing of three people all distinctly audible.

About an hour later, the emergency room door finally opened from the inside.

Glancing at Li Shiping, the doctor’s face was full of blame, "What kind of mother are you? The child has pneumonia from the fever. Aren’t you aware that a high fever that doesn’t subside can damage the brain?"

"Pneumonia?" Li Shiping’s heart ached.

"The child is not in any immediate danger right now, but she’ll need to be hospitalized for treatment," the doctor said sternly, urging, "Go and take care of the hospital admission procedures quickly!"

"I’ll do it," He Nan said.

"He Nan, thank you," Li Shiping said, gradually regaining her composure upon hearing the child was not in life-threatening danger.

"It’s okay," he responded.

He Nan turned and went to the billing section.

Not long after, a nurse walked out of the emergency room holding the child. Li Shiping and Shen Mianmian quickly came forward, took over the child, and followed the nurse to the ward.

"Keep an eye on her, and call me when the bag of fluids is almost finished," the nurse instructed.

Shortly after the young nurse left, He Nan entered the ward, and looking at the child’s red cheeks, asked, "Is Wan Dongcheng not at home?"

Li Shiping’s expression changed slightly, and she evasively said, "His cousin is getting married tomorrow, so he went back home."

Dongcheng must not have had any experience looking after children and didn’t realize the severity of her condition, which is why he left. Otherwise, he surely wouldn’t have been so heartless.
