He Xiaobei was startled, but when he made out the man’s face, his eyes widened with surprise and delight.

He remembered asking once before. His mommy’s eyes were filled with sorrow then, and although He Xiaobei was young, he could read people’s emotions in their eyes. He didn’t like seeing his mommy sad.

The man squinted his eyes slightly and asked, "What’s your mother’s name?"

"Shen Mianmian." He Xiaobei stared at the man and said, "Daddy, you don’t have a beard in the pictures."

Upon hearing the name Shen Mianmian, the man’s expression solidified momentarily, and his hand trembled slightly. He brought his hand to his mouth, then asked, "How about now?"

"Pinky promise, hang for a hundred years and never change."

"Never change," the man promised, then patted his shoulder, "Go to the restroom. Remember, don’t tell anyone that you’ve seen me."

"Okay."

He Xiaobei nodded vigorously and then reluctantly left the private room.

He went to the restroom and on his return, couldn’t resist going back into the private room. But the man was gone. He Xiaobei, disappointed, walked out just as Shen Mianmian came out looking for him.
