Chapter 46: 046. The Lian family’s attitude, Lianshan’s speed
Once an old bachelor decides to find a partner, his actions can be remarkably swift.
In just the short distance from the Liu family’s place to Lian Hai’s home, Lianshan had already planned out in his mind how the house should be built and who to ask for help.
But after entering the house, before he even had a chance to greet his little nephew and find an opportunity to bring up the topic, he faced his own little sister Lian Yue’s serious and solemn scrutiny and question: "Brother, do you, sincerely fancy Liu family’s Shuzhen? And does she really take a liking to you? Are you two genuinely interested in each other, planning to spend your lives together happily, instead of just putting up with each other?"
Or perhaps is it because...
For the sake of our little brother’s two hundred yuan debt, that you agreed to Liu Shuzhen becoming your sister-in-law.
It’s not that Lian Yue deliberately wanted to think little of her brother, but rather that this marriage came too fast, too unexpectedly, that she couldn’t even think positively about it if she tried!
Just five or six days ago, Liu Shuzhen was still suicidal over her divorce from Dai Weiguo. How, in the blink of an eye, did she start considering another marriage?
Isn’t it because her life at home isn’t easy, and she’s not willing to have her child pointed at and gossiped about after it’s born?
Their family’s poor, her brother’s almost twenty-seven, which isn’t exactly young. Finding a divorced woman or a widow with a child as a sister-in-law, Lian Yue didn’t mind. But having someone come into the Lian family with divided loyalty is absolutely unacceptable to her.
So amid the family’s cheerfulness, she took it upon herself to seriously ask her brother what exactly is going on.
No matter how difficult, marriage is a lifelong matter, and you can’t just randomly settle for whoever comes along!
Knowing that his little sister has a straightforward nature and is asking out of such concern, Lianshan earnestly replied: "Yes, I do fancy Shuzhen. I’m thinking of marrying her and living a good life together. We are genuinely fond of each other and plan to spend our lives harmoniously.
From here on, she will be your big sister-in-law, and her words will be my words. The child in her belly will be your nephew or niece. If you still have regard for me as your big brother, you will get along well with her, respect her, and help her just like you respect and help me. Don’t look down on her because she had the misfortune of marrying the wrong person before. After all, she doesn’t have the bad taste to not recognize a good person like Dai Weiguo did, nor did she have the fortune I have now!"
Everyone in the room was stunned at Lianshan’s words.
Lian Yue’s husband, Ning Jianshe, even rubbed his eyes in disbelief, thinking he was seeing things.
Oh my, the always reticent big brother-in-law!
To actually explain things so solemnly and at length, how much does he care about this sister-in-law who hasn’t even crossed the threshold yet?
It seems he needs to double down at home and persuade his wife to adjust her attitude. Otherwise, any misplaced display of superiority like acting as if my big brother is so excellent that he deserves a daughter of the Jade Emperor would not only upset her sister-in-law but also displease the big brother-in-law! Haven’t there seen even the second brother-in-law and his wife praise Liu Shuzhen highly?
After the big brother-in-law’s words with a slight air of admonishment, the couple showed no discontent but rather agreed wholeheartedly.
The Ning family, with few family members, were left with only three of them twenty-some years ago after fleeing the famine. After finally marrying off their son, the parents then passed away. Now, Ning Jianshe and Lian Yue are the only ones left, suffering from the lack of family to rely on. Ning Jianshe desperately hoped to get along well with his two brothers-in-law so that while the adults supported each other, the children could forge strong bonds of brotherly love from a young age.
With that in mind, how could he possibly stand by and watch as his entire family approved of this new sister-in-law while his wife sang a different tune?
After a moment of surprise, he quickly responded with a smile: "Big brother, please don’t be annoyed at our Xiao Yue for overstepping; she just cares about you so much and is afraid you’ll get wronged. If she doesn’t ask to get to the bottom of things, she probably won’t sleep a wink tonight. Now that she knows you and sister-in-law are truly together, she feels relieved. She’ll definitely help organize everything to make sure you and the sister-in-law who isn’t officially married yet have a beautiful and lively wedding.
Though we may not be rich, we can certainly lend a hand. Whether it’s heading up the mountain to hunt or down the river to fish, big brother, just say the word, and I’ll be with you.
Oh, we still have some twenty-year-old elm wood left over from when we made furniture for our wedding. It’s not top-grade lumber, but it’s good enough for rough, sturdy furniture. If you don’t mind, I’ll bring it over for you tomorrow."
Lianshan chuckled and shook his head: "Brother-in-law, what are you saying? Don’t I, as her big brother, know that my little sister has a sharp tongue but a soft heart?
I’m delighted she cares about me; how could I blame her?
As for your elm wood, I could really use it, so I won’t stand on ceremony. I’ll take it tomorrow, and when the time comes, I’ll consider some fine red pine for you. Even if you don’t need it, it’ll come in handy someday when my nephew gets married, isn’t it?"
Ning Jianshe waved his hand, insisting there’s no need to talk about returning things within the family.
They were just happy to help out with a bit of assistance for his wedding.
Lianshan said nothing but made a firm decision in his heart. Being a wife is not easy, especially when you have two poor brothers. As her brother, he should be considerate, and even if he can’t help her much, he should be careful not to add to her burden.
After communicating with his younger siblings, Lianshan immediately began preparing for house construction in full swing.
To finish the house soon and bring his beautiful bride home, he was racking his brains.
Inspired by his brother-in-law Ning Jianshe, he didn’t bother with making adobe bricks, cutting trees, or reaping thatch individually but instead borrowed materials from other families planning to build houses. He planned to build his house first and during the drying period, with his second brother and brother-in-law, and make bricks, cut wood, and harvest moss to repay them.
Maybe everyone wanted to help him fulfill this old bachelor’s dream of marriage or perhaps they were just after a bit of repayment, anyway, Lianshan’s accelerated house-building plan went extremely smoothly.
Everything happened so swiftly that the plans were made on the first day, tools were borrowed in the evening, and on the second day, he went to the mountains with his second brother and brother-in-law to catch some wild chickens and rabbits to feed the helpers who would assist in the house-building. On the third morning, their family’s three grass huts, which they had lived in for more than ten years, began to be excavated.
This hasty and efficient progress could certainly rival the pace of Shenzhen, which would become world-famous several years later!
