Chapter 85: 85 mentality

"You two go ahead, we’ll head out as well, it should take about three hours to get to the county town," Wang Jianqiang parked the cart carefully, sitting to the side while Wang Xiaolong drove.

Their pace was about the same as the ox cart, so when they arrived at the station, the ox cart wasn’t far behind.

After waiting for twenty minutes, the bus finally departed. "Sis, you’re working the day shift tomorrow, you should come home with me for dinner."

"Sure, Xinyu, my mom said I’ve gained weight." Wang Ailing happily touched her face. Nowadays people like being chubby, unlike the future where everyone keeps dieting.

"Yeah, being a bit plump looks good."

An hour later, they got off the bus and went straight home, only to find the door was latched from the inside.

"Xinyu?"

"Director Wei is at my house these days." Jiang Xinyu was a bit embarrassed.

Wei Kaiyun heard the knocking, knowing that Jiang Xinyu was back, he opened the door with a smile, but his smile froze when he saw the two people outside.

"Director Wei."

"Jiang Xinyu, you two are back this early?"

"Yeah, there’s firewood delivered home, I won’t keep you, Director Wei, there’s a lot of work to do, it’s too messy."

"Should I stay and help out?"

"No need, there are two other people, plus us, it’ll be quick."

"Alright, I’ll be on my way then."

Seeing Wei Kaiyun off, Jiang Xinyu let out a long sigh, as if sending away a plague god.

"Xinyu, what about you and Director Wei?"

"Us? You’re overthinking it. It’s just that Director Wei can’t rest well at the factory."

"Oh!"

"Sis, I’ll cook, you go meet my uncle and them by the roadside, we should at least let them eat before leaving."

"Sure, how long until they arrive?"

"You can go in half an hour and still make it."

"Alright, I’ll give you a hand."

"I’m just making flatbreads, scrambled eggs, and lamb offal soup."

"I’ll light the fire for you, at least warm the kang."

Jiang Xinyu used the hot water from the thermos to knead the dough, which was probably just filled by Wei Kaiyun. She left it to rest on the side. Then she peeled a large scallion, chopped it up, cracked four eggs, and prepared a large bowl of lamb offal, along with peanut sauce and sesame paste.

She took out two sections of vermicelli. Grated radish, to be added to the lamb offal soup later, as there were no other vegetables. That’s all she could do.

"Sis, you should go outside and wait for my uncle and them, I’ll bake the flatbreads."

"Alright, I’m going now. Don’t rush, they need to unload first when they get here."

"No, let’s eat first, otherwise where will we get the strength to work?"

Jiang Xinyu had already built up a good fire in the stove in the main room, and started making flatbreads.

Wang Ailing also felt for her dad and brother, so she didn’t say much and went out to wait for them.

The process of baking flatbreads was quite fast, and by the time the ox cart arrived, the flatbreads were ready.

"Uncle, Brother Xiaolong, let’s eat first, I’ll go make the soup, just tie the ox cart outside."

"No need, let’s unload first, and eat later. You go ahead and cook, the three of us will be quick."

Hearing Wang Jianqiang’s words, Jiang Xinyu didn’t say much, and went inside to cook.

In half an hour, the whole cart of firewood was unloaded.

Wang Xiaolong used the water bucket on the cart to give the ox a drink. Jiang Xinyu also gave the ox a yam. Surprisingly, it actually ate it.

Wang Ailing helped with the hot water so that the two could wash their hands.

"Xinyu, you didn’t have to make something special for us." Wang Jianqiang looked at the food on the table, sighed; he had smelled the aroma while unloading the cart, it had been two or three years since he had such a good meal.

"It’s my duty. Brother Xiaolong, sit down quickly. Here, this is the flatbread I made for you." Jiang Xinyu opened the flatbread, placed a lot of vermicelli and scrambled eggs inside, rolled it up, and handed it to Wang Xiaolong.

Then she handed one to Wang Jianqiang. "Sis, help yourself, I’ll serve the soup."

Each person got a big bowl of lamb offal and shredded radish soup. "Eat quickly, otherwise, you’ll end up heading back in the dark."

The two initially felt a bit reserved, but as they ate, they couldn’t control themselves. A total of six flatbreads, each of the two ate two. They also had two big bowls of lamb offal soup each.

"Uncle, I won’t keep you any longer, you should head off, here’s two sections of vermicelli. Take them back for Aunt to try."

In the end, Wang Jianqiang took the vermicelli back, not for anything else, but to let his wife have a taste.

"Xinyu, I don’t need it, I’m heading back now."

"I’ll ride my bike and see you off."

"No need, I’ll ride a section of the ox cart, it’ll be quick, you can tidy up yourself."

"Alright. You all be careful on the road."

After seeing off their family of three, Jiang Xinyu planned to take a bath as she hadn’t bathed for several days and felt her scalp was itchy.

Wei Kaiyun came over to see the gate was latched, knowing this meant Jiang Xinyu’s family had left, he stepped forward to knock on the door.

After waiting for more than ten minutes, Jiang Xinyu finally came to open the door.

Seeing her appearance, Wei Kaiyun thought it was rather amusing. Her head wrapped in a towel, her face all rosy.

"Hurry in, I’ll latch the door, aren’t you worried about catching a cold?"

"I thought you wouldn’t be coming over today, Director Wei." Jiang Xinyu said as she ran inside the room.

Wei Kaiyun latched the door and followed her in. "Did you eat dinner?"

"Yes, some people from the village brought firewood, I had to feed them. Director Wei, what do you want to eat?"

"I’ll make something myself?"

"Can you?"

"I can, just cooking a bowl of noodles will do, maybe with two meat pies."

"Might as well use half a flatbread, let me do it, are you still having lamb offal noodles?"

"Yes, that works."

While Jiang Xinyu was cooking, Wei Kaiyun noticed the bath bucket in the west room steaming, this girl really knew how to enjoy herself. But what did she use? It smells so good.

He considered suggesting for himself to take a soak too, but figured she would explode, so he thought better of it. He swore to himself that he would win her over in a month.

Jiang Xinyu cooked plain noodles, really not wanting to knead dough again, this would do.

She also reheated the meat pies on the griddle. Eating them cold wasn’t good for the stomach.

"Xinyu, where should we dispose of the bath bucket water?"

"No need, I’ll do it myself."

"Nonsense, I’ll do it. You’re making food for me, I can’t just sit and wait to eat."

"Alright, just pour it into the yard, when you come back from trips, you can grow vegetables."

By the time the meal was ready on the table, Wei Kaiyun had already taken care of the bath bucket.

"Do you want to eat a bit more?"

Jiang Xinyu shook her head, "I ate half a flatbread. I can’t eat any more. Director Wei, you eat your fill."

After speaking, she left the west room and went to the east room to dry her hair.

She combed her hair smoothly in front of the mirror and took scissors to cut it to shoulder length, just the right length for a ponytail. There were still some dry, yellow ends left; she’d cut it again once it grew longer.

Wei Kaiyun coughed and entered the east room as well, "Why did you cut your hair?"

"The ends were in poor condition, just cutting them off is fine. Plus, it’s hard to wash when it’s too long. Short hair is easier to manage."
