Chapter 385: Chapter 385: Wild Vegetable Pancakes
Qin Xiangnuan opened her eyes, but she just turned over and continued sleeping. Biting the edge of her blanket, she didn’t need to guess to know that it was Jian Zhiqing who had carried her back to her own room. In a half-asleep state, she seemed to remember Jian Zhiqing mentioning that she had gained weight recently. At that time, she was too drowsy to react, but thinking about it now was quite embarrassing. Nevertheless, she once again sensed Jian Zhiqing’s attentiveness.
She always knew that this man was very detail-oriented, but he was not nitpicky.
His meticulousness was not overdone, he loved cleanliness but didn’t have OCD, and he was knowledgeable but didn’t show off.
Thankfully, she was back in her own room. Otherwise, if Granny Lu found out she was coming out from Jian Zhiqing’s room, there’s no telling how scared she would get. After all, they are no longer young, both adults, and in ancient times it was customary to differentiate between men and women after the age of seven, and although such customs are not strictly observed now, there still remains a distinction between men and women. Granny Lu was ultimately conservative, so maintaining their relationship at a relative balance was better.
Outside, Granny Lu quietly asked Qin Xiangyang.
"Xiang Yang, has your sister woken up?"
Qin Xiangyang shook his head, "Not yet, Brother Jian said Nuannuan had a nightmare, probably didn’t sleep well, let her sleep some more."
Granny Lu sighed with a mixture of sadness and concern.
"This child suffered so much when she was younger, lacked a father’s affection and a mother’s love. Who knows if she’s recalling those days?"
Qin Xiangyang felt quite distressed hearing this. It was all thanks to Qin Guohua and Hu Li’s "good deeds" that caused him and his sister to still have these shadows in their hearts, occasionally having nightmares that upset them. For him, it was no big deal since he was a boy who had served in the military, with a larger courage, but his sister was sensitive, and he really feared that his heavy-hearted sister might think too much.
The voices outside grew fainter, probably because Granny Lu and Qin Xiangyang went about their own business, and even Doraemon was quiet.
Qin Xiangnuan scratched the blanket. It was filled with her own scent, very familiar, warm, and secure. She stretched out her hand to feel for her phone by the bedhead, and then placed it within the blanket, thinking if there was a call, she would definitely feel it.
Moreover, not many people called her phone, likely Jian Zhiqing the most. And she knew in her heart that in reality, she was just waiting for that man’s call.
In fact, she liked this kind of relationship – calm, light, and sometimes reliant on each other. She disliked being too close, as it would raise her guard unless it was someone extremely close. She maintained this distance with anyone else.
This was something she might not even realize herself, but there was one person who understood.
Mr. Wang just entered the office and found Jian Zhiqing leaning back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest, but his eyes were tightly closed, obviously asleep.
"Secretary," Mr. Wang softly called out to Jian Zhiqing.
Hmm, Jian Zhiqing opened his eyes, only to realize that he had fallen asleep.
"What’s the matter?" He straightened up, placing his hands on the desk, and casually picked up a pen to twirl between his fingers.
"Secretary, that..." Mr. Wang pointed at the coat set aside by Jian Zhiqing, "Though the weather isn’t cold, you should still cover yourself when sleeping to avoid catching a cold."
"Thank you, Mr. Wang," Jian Zhiqing revived his spirits. Indeed, when he woke up, he felt quite cold.
"Secretary, haven’t you been resting well recently?" Mr. Wang quietly observed Jian Zhiqing’s complexion, with some dark circles under his eyes and a not-so-good complexion lacking his usual healthy, spirited look.
"Yeah, a bit," Jian Zhiqing smiled helplessly, being a public servant was no easy task.
Mr. Wang really wanted to cry; it’s not just hard, it’s extremely difficult, who says having an iron rice bowl job is comfortable. Just look at them, waking up earlier than chickens, working more than oxen without gaining any favor, earning just enough salary with barely enough to fend off hunger and cold.
The more Mr. Wang thought, the sadder he felt, and finally he walked out with a miserable face, finding a place to cry for a while.
Jian Zhiqing hastened to finish the paperwork in his hands. An overseas investor was planning to invest soon, with many projects involved. Attracting foreign investment was their top priority, and as long as these foreign investments truly entered Jingdu City’s market, they could potentially solve the employment problems for many people. Precisely because the investment was hefty, he had been extremely busy round the clock.
In the afternoon, he locked the documents in the drawer, took his car keys, and prepared to make a trip to the hospital. He needed to get a medical report for the young girl; he didn’t want her crying out to him again. Despite being stubborn and reluctant to shed tears, he knew she was genuinely scared.
Qin Xiangnuan said Jian Zhiqing was her Doraemon, indeed a Doraemon, nearly omnipotent. Whatever Qin Xiangnuan wanted, he could accomplish, including getting hold of the medical report with ease.
When he returned in the afternoon, Granny Lu had made wild vegetable pancakes for them. These were made from wild veggies grown in the fields, which used to be common everywhere but have now become rare since fewer people in Jingdu farm these days.
Their own few acres of land just happened to have an abundance of wild veggies, which Granny Lu carefully brought back to make into pancakes for the family.
After thoroughly washing the vegetables and adding some flour, they steamed them in pots similar to making buns. After steaming, they mixed garlic and chili pepper together, which dipped into these pancakes tasted incredibly satisfying. Granny Lu often ate these in the past due to the lack of grains at home, and now they had become a rare treat.
Jian Zhiqing devoured three in a row and still felt unsatisfied, not having had his fill.
"Granny, this is really delicious," he said, having tasted these distinctive Northern Chinese wild vegetable pancakes for the first time, only available during summer and otherwise not found on regular days. No wonder he was especially fond of them.
"If you like them, Granny will make more for you tomorrow," Granny Lu smiled and handed Jian Zhiqing another one.
Jian Zhiqing took it unreservedly, turned his head, and saw Qin Xiangnuan sitting on a chair, eating the wild vegetable pancake quite gracefully. Her complexion seemed good, probably because she had a good rest today. He couldn’t help but smile, then picked up the wild vegetable pancake and took bites.
The wild vegetable pancakes were indeed filling for the moment, but after consuming, one could become hungry quite quickly.
