Chapter 333: Chapter 333: Won’t Go Bald Anymore
In the afternoon, after school, Qin Xiangnuan came back and brought two little carrot tops with her; one around ten years old, the other even younger at about three or four. The older one had thick eyebrows and big eyes, while the younger one was a chubby little thing, extremely cute.
Granny Lu always loved children, especially children of this age, and she was particularly fond of them. Though she had been tired from sitting in a car all day, her spirits lifted instantly upon seeing the two children.
"Are you my sister’s granny?"
Taotao lifted his little face and asked in his milky voice.
"Yes," Granny Lu touched Taotao’s little head, "you can call me Granny too." Granny Lu had heard about the two children from Qin Xiangyang; one was Jian Zhiqing’s brother, the other his cousin. The brother was much older, practically old enough to be a father, and it was Jian Zhiqing who had held them and raised them since they were very young.
"So you must be Little Taotao, right?"
Granny Lu guessed that this must be Jian Zhiqing’s little cousin, only four years old this year.
"Uh-huh," Taotao nodded vigorously with his little head, stretching out his chubby little arms, "Granny, pick me up, I am Taotao, Taotao is very obedient."
Granny Lu’s heart melted instantly as she lifted the little boy into her arms with love.
"I feel like I’m going to be neglected," Qin Xiangnuan sighed and tugged on her big brother’s sleeve. The elders always adored the younger ones. Here, it wasn’t just Taotao who was the youngest; even on ordinary days, she was pampered like precious, not to mention by Granny Lu.
"I’ve long been out of favor," Qin Xiangyang scratched his head and casually ruffled his little sister’s hair, "Look at you, like a tomboy."
"It’ll grow out," Qin Xiangnuan clasped her head with both hands. If it weren’t for that wound, would she need to make herself look like this? At least it looked more presentable now. If she had kept her long hair like before, it would have looked odd, drawing more attention to the bald spot in the middle.
With Granny Lu around, Qin Xiangnuan truly felt liberated, becoming the host herself. Jian Zhiqin and Taotao both liked Granny Lu very much. Granny Lu had nothing to do at home all day but look after the two little ones. Conghua knew that a big help had arrived at home and clung to Granny Lu’s sturdy legs, overwhelmed with joy. And whenever Granny Lu had something good, she made sure to share a portion with her.
Qin Xiangnuan took Granny Lu to the store, which only opened for a short while in the morning to cater to those who exercise or go to work or school. They only sold scallion pancakes with vegetables, which was much easier than steaming lotus leaf pancakes. Granny Lu had been in this business for almost five or six years now and was already adept at it, so she quickly got the hang of it. The next day, she paired up with Xie Yonghong and refused to let Qin Xiangnuan help at all, as Qin Xiangnuan genuinely felt unneeded with free time on her hands.
But Granny Lu didn’t see it that way. She thought that once you started school, you should be a good student and not worry about things at home. Just study hard, as was the case with the students from Shenjia Village; none of them did farm work or house chores, but instead, the whole family revolved around the student.
Since Qin Xiangnuan couldn’t argue with Granny Lu, she had to let go of the business and hand it all over to Granny Lu, who made around 30 yuan on her first day. The amount didn’t differ much from what they made at Shenjia Village, and it was much easier here, selling only pancakes with vegetables, whereas Xie Yonghong sold porridge. The two paired up to sell quickly; you couldn’t say whose goods were better, but having both choices meant more customers. Those who wanted pancakes might also get a bowl of porridge, and those who came for porridge might buy a pancake as well.
"Here, Nuannuan, take this."
Granny Lu handed all the money to Qin Xiangnuan.
"You keep it, Granny," Qin Xiangnuan pushed the money back into Granny Lu’s hand. She wasn’t short of money. With the few properties she owned, she was making about two thousand yuan a month. Plus, she would soon have another house under her name.
"You take it," Granny Lu stuffed the money back into Qin Xiangnuan’s hands.
"With money in Granny’s hand, it’s just for buying groceries. This money will just gather dust with me. You are a smart child who knows how to make money grow. Leaving it with me is a waste."
Qin Xiangnuan never knew her granny had such advanced notions, to even understand the concept of money making money. She had assumed that Granny was like other villagers, hoarding money and never willing to let go, indecisive and hesitant to make tough decisions. Just like Aunt Hua, who was advised to buy that bus station shop when it was inexpensive, and the paperwork was easy. Now, those shops had been bought up by others and becoming unavailable even if she had the intent. It was too late.
Aunt Hua clearly regretted it. Those storefronts were now very sought after, rented out and in use. Aunt Hua couldn’t even rent one if she wanted to, and so she was just like the Wen family used to be, peddling food from a tricycle cart. The business was okay, but as people’s living standards rose, more went out to dine, and pushing a cart through the wind and rain made things difficult. If it rained, she couldn’t set up her stall, and a rainy day meant a day without income.
Aunt Hua deeply regretted it. If she had bought the storefronts, she would’ve spent only a few tens of thousands per shop, which now had doubled in value. Renting them out could bring in hundreds each month while using only a small part for herself,
gaining hundreds of extra yuan each month without fear of bad weather.
But what’s the use of talking about it now?
You can only regret.
However, there is no medicine for regret in this world. Aunt Hua bitterly regretted not listening to Qin Xiangnuan’s advice, but there was nothing she could do now, except push the cart with her family and make a few dozen yuan a day, which was still more than most ordinary families earned.
Qin Xiangnuan took out the medicine and applied it to her head, gently touching her scalp as if the scar had lightened considerably. She wasn’t sure whether it was psychological or what, but it certainly felt much smoother, and her hair seemed to have grown quite a bit, at least enough to be prickly to the touch.
So she wouldn’t become bald.
Having applied the medicine, she took out her textbooks and started reading. Nowadays, she didn’t have much else to do besides studying. Study, and more studying. Granny Lu took everything upon herself, taking care of Taotao, running the stall in the morning, and preparing meals three times a day.
