Chapter 317: Chapter 317: The Mischievous Child Who Made a Mistake
"Sorry, I still need to go to class," Qin Xiangnuan didn’t stay here any longer. She wasn’t dismissed from school yet. The exams were a few days away, the teachers were strict, and if she were absent, the teachers would definitely scold her if they found out. She was a student that the teachers paid close attention to, love deep as the discipline was severe. Although it was related to her own interests, she couldn’t deny that the teachers’ special attention really put a lot of pressure on her, but it was also very motivating.
She went to class, while Jian Zhiqing dealt with Jian Zhiqin’s matter. No matter how it was dealt with, she believed that Jian Zhiqing would handle it well.
Fortunately, she wasn’t gone for long, and when she returned to the classroom, the teacher hadn’t arrived yet.
"What’s wrong, what happened?" Li Li leaned on the desk and asked Qin Xiangnuan cautiously.
"It’s nothing," Qin Xiangnuan tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, "Some brat caused trouble, and his brother is taking care of it now."
Li Li was confused about what she meant, originally wanting to ask more, but the teacher came in just then, so she forgot about it and didn’t continue to ask. What was a troublemaker, and what happened?
By the time class ended, Qin Xiangnuan heard Jian Zhiqin’s crying as she returned.
She knew the troublemaker must have gotten a beating.
She pushed open the door and saw the troublemaker standing in the corner, wiping tears, his lips pouting pitifully, but he was standing upright, not daring to move at all—it looked like he was standing at attention.
"Don’t bother with him."
Jian Zhiqing came out of the room and cast a cold glance at Jian Zhiqin.
"Go back and let mom and dad deal with you."
Jian Zhiqin shrank a little, tears falling like they were free.
"Go wash your clothes," Jian Zhiqing pointed towards the sink, "The clothes from yesterday are still there. What, you expect someone else to wash them for you?"
Jian Zhiqin didn’t dare delay, quickly wiping his tears before going to wash his clothes. Of course, he needed to use laundry powder, scrubbing on the washing board, unlike most boys who just soak their clothes, rub them a bit, and call it done without caring whether they’re clean.
Jian Zhiqin was seriously washing, daring to be angry but not to speak. That’s just how their home was, the older ones picked on the younger, and the younger ones picked on the even younger. He was the most pitiful creature in the family; beaten by Laozi and his brother. The more the poor troublemaker thought about it, the sadder he got, continuously wiping away tears. Moreover, returning home meant he couldn’t avoid Laozi’s beating, and while feeling sorry for himself, he couldn’t understand why he had such a bullying brother.
Qin Xiangnuan felt sorry for him, but in the end, she didn’t interfere; this was the Jian family’s way of raising children. In fact, it proved to be quite successful, not turning the child into a spoiled brat. In an era dominated by military and rich second generations, it was rare for children not to grow up crooked.
Anyway, Jian Zhiqin was bound to be punished. But by the time he returned, he’d forgotten about the beating; as if it served as a reminder to be humble. Naturally, he could keep his mouth shut now, learning what to say and what not to say.
Qin Xiangnuan started making New Year’s clothes again, the same people, one set each. The Jians, Taotao’s family, their family, and a few brothers from the big brother’s dorm. She made a set of thermal underwear for each of them because she knew everyone wore military uniforms at school, so she didn’t make overcoats. A set of thermal underwear, worn inside, meant that even just a thin jacket on the outside would be enough to keep them warm.
Qin Xiangxiang carried a bag of stuff to her dorm, everyone was on holiday, waiting to go home for the New Year. They had been classmates for two years, already very familiar with each other, close as brothers wearing the same pants. Naturally, there was a lot of freedom among them, affectionate as real siblings, beyond typical classmates, having braved wind and rain together.
"What’s this?" Li Dongsheng immediately grabbed the bag, hoping for tasty treats, but upon opening it he found clothes instead of food, which disappointed him.
"You are not left out."
Qin Xiangyang punched Li Dongsheng’s shoulder. They both came from rural areas and were closest friends, inseparable. Every trip home, Li Dongsheng would tag along for meals, strengthening their bond.
He took several sets of thermal underwear out of the bag, neatly folded and packed in plastic bags, "Everyone come over, the New Year is coming. My sister prepared a set for each of you, take it home and wear it."
At this call, several guys rushed over, grabbing a set each. Of course, Li Dongsheng was the shrewdest, snatching one first.
The others all opened theirs and immediately tried them on, finding them perfectly fitting, soft and comfortable, and most importantly, warm. Just wearing a jacket over them was like wearing several layers.
"Your sister’s craftsmanship is really good," Li Dongsheng was both envious and jealous, "How can your sister be so capable? She’s good at studying, cooking, and making clothes. Why don’t we have such sisters? That’s what everyone else is thinking too. Sure, we have sisters at home, but none like Qin Xiangnuan, both graceful and competent."
Qin Xiangyang chuckled, "You only see her competence, but you don’t know the hardships we faced as children."
If she hadn’t been capable back then, we would have starved to death. How could we go to school?
With these thoughts, Qin Xiangyang harbored indelible memories. Who would choose to be so capable if not forced? When he was a kid, even when his cotton-padded jacket was torn, nobody would mend it for him, except for his five or six-year-old sister, who would stitch it up with a needle.
Maybe because those memories were too deep, his sister loved making clothes; hence she developed such a skill at tailoring. Although he sometimes wondered how she learned, since nobody taught her, he eventually thought she might be self-taught, given how clever she was.
He picked up another bag, "These are some snacks my sister made for you to eat on the train."
"This is..." He took one out for himself, but then appeared to forget the name.
"Right, this is called Colonel’s Chicken Chunks. I don’t know how the colonel turned into chicken chunks, but it’s really delicious. This is my portion. If you want to try, come over. If you don’t like it, I’ll take it home to eat myself."
