Chapter 306: Chapter 306: Fortuitous Wealth

Qin Xiangnuan came over and sat down, starting to crack sunflower seeds, forgoing a meal.

"Not eating," she said after eating a seed, savoring its unique flavor, "It’s about time to arrive at the station, I want to eat noodle soup."

"Just that?" Jian Zhiqing thought she wanted to get off the train to eat meat.

"Yep," Qin Xiangnuan cracked another seed, "I just want to eat the noodles my granny makes; Granny Lu’s noodles are delicious. Brother Jian, you must have a couple more bowls when it’s time."

"Sure," Jian Zhiqing got a bit excited about Granny Lu’s noodles after hearing Qin Xiangnuan talk about it. The things she made were incredibly delicious, so naturally, if she said they were good, they must be good.

The train whistled, finally arriving.

Jian Zhiqing took down their luggage from the overhead rack and extended his hand to Qin Xiangnuan to avoid getting separated in the crowd.

Qin Xiangnuan naturally placed her hand in his warm and dry palm, unlike hers that was slightly sweaty. He might have noticed, but didn’t say anything. The train was incredibly crowded, with everyone pushing to get off. It was all thanks to Jian Zhiqing that Qin Xiangnuan wasn’t squeezed into something like a scallion pancake.

After much effort, they finally got off the train. Qin Xiangnuan breathed in the outside air, and instantly, she felt completely relaxed.

How wonderful, there was no smog, just a clear blue sky with fluffy white clouds. The air carried a natural freshness.

"Brother Jian, let’s go."

Qin Xiangnuan shaded her eyes with her hand, blocking the distant sunlight. It was now summer and the weather was quite hot, with the bright light making them feel drowsy. Thankfully, Shenjia Village was very close to the station.

Jian Zhiqing slung her backpack over his shoulders and tidied up her hair, ready to go.

As soon as they left the station, Qin Xiangnuan noticed that everything looked different. It was no longer the same old decrepit architecture; the entire station had been renovated. A prominent clock showed the current time, and there were ticket windows on both sides of the station, as well as a high-class waiting room. Not far away were quite a few unoccupied storefronts with large glass panes and neatly constructed buildings.

They were four-storied, how the upstairs was used, whether for offices or living quarters for the station staff, was unclear. The ground floor was filled with uniformly designed shops. These shops, decades later, would mostly be sold out and even with money, you might not be able to buy them. It wasn’t clear what the future held, but at the time when Qin Xiangnuan was in her forties, this place would still be the most prime location.

It seems like, in a past life, the owners of the demolished old shops ended up being compensated with these shops - wonder if they were claimed already.

"Brother Jian, come on," Qin Xiangnuan took Chun Jianzhiqing’s sleeve and ran towards those shops.

"Brother Jian, look," she pointed at a shop that had not been refurbished yet.

"If they let us choose here, Brother Jian, which one would you like?"

Jian Zhiqing put down their luggage and inspected each shop before pointing to one, the third from the entrance. "This one’s not bad, it’s closer to the main road. The first one is too noisy, the second one, just barely okay, but the third one is good," if he had to choose, he would pick the third one.

"If we compensate with two rooms instead?" Qin Xiangnuan was just mulling over the idea and didn’t have much confidence in actually getting two rooms, but it never hurt to dream.

"Then it would be the second and third rooms."

Jian Zhiqing pondered and then proposed his suggestion to Qin Xiangnuan.

Qin Xiangnuan nodded, finding his thoughts similar to hers. If she were given two rooms, then she would choose the second and third rooms. Depending on the tenants, whether they rented separately or together, both options would be good. However, it all depended on whether they would give her one room or two.

If it were two rooms, that would be ideal. If only one, she wouldn’t be upset—as it was, this was a windfall in her life.

They hailed a taxi and set off for Shenjia Village. The village had changed a lot in recent years, with newly constructed roads, making travel convenient. Although there were no buses yet, many cars were coming and going.

With a school nearby, it wouldn’t be long before public transportation was available. Besides farming, another source of income for Shennong Village would be room rentals. Initially, when Qin Xiangnuan asked Uncle Hua to help build the house, it was designed for easy renting. Started with just one floor, they later added a second floor, suitable for renting out. The first floor was spacious enough for Granny Hua and Hua Jun to live in. As for Granny Hua’s plot of land, Qin Xiangnuan planned to save some money in the next few years to build upon it, so all future rental income would go to Granny Hua.

She couldn’t find a suitable job for Hua, so she thought it might be better to let him be a landlord. In the future, find him an honest wife, have a child, and Granny Hua could live at least another decade or more. When the child grew up, regardless of gender, one’s own children are always best. Besides, there was her and her brother. No matter what, Hua Jun wouldn’t starve to death.

"Granny, we’re back!"

Qin Xiangnuan called out as soon as she reached the doorstep, like a migratory bird returning to its nest.

"You’re back?" Granny Lu hurried out. Thinking about her granddaughter’s return today, she had bought meat and vegetables early. She was just worrying about why they hadn’t arrived yet, and as luck would have it, while she was concerned, they came back.

"Granny, I’m back," Qin Xiangnuan ran over and hugged Granny Lu’s arm like a child, constantly rubbing her face against her arm.

Granny Lu felt a twinge in her heart; such a young child, and if she were in someone else’s home, she would be blissfully unaware of worldly troubles. Yet this child had already endured so much hardship at such a young age.

Lifting her eyes, she saw Jian Zhiqing standing not far away. The man before her was exceedingly handsome with a tranquil look, exuding the aura of a man of status, standing tall and straight, quite unlike the men of their rural village.

Her thoughts quickly shifted, and she eagerly reached out her hand to Jian Zhiqing.

"Zhiqing, right? Come in, don’t stand at the door. Let’s eat first," Granny Lu said with a smile in her eyes, extremely fond of Jian Zhiqing.

Jian Zhiqing came over and called her "Granny."

At that call, goosebumps rose all over Qin Xiangnuan.

The more Granny Lu looked at Jian Zhiqing, the more she liked him, promptly inviting him inside. Qin Xiangnuan had mentioned over the phone that she would bring Jian Zhiqing back, and Granny Lu, fearing that a city dweller might not be accustomed to their rural setting, had prepared a room especially for him. New bedding replaced old, and even the bedsheets, made from coarse fabric woven in the village, were meant to offer a comfortable sleep.
