Chapter 282: In Need of Laborers
Chapter 282: Chapter 282: In Need of Laborers
Jian Zhiqing went out to buy meat while she had already started steaming the rice, and after stir-frying these dishes, they were soon ready to eat.
Meanwhile, Jian Zhiqing took a book out and placed it on the stone table, flipping through it, while Conghua lay lazily beside, occasionally wagging its tail.
Suddenly, Conghua’s eyes lit up, and it stood up as well.
Jian Zhiqing put down the book and walked towards the kitchen because Qin Xiangnuan had brought out two plates, and the rice was ready.
There were several vegetarian dishes, a plate of sauce-covered ribs, and a meatball soup that he hadn’t eaten for a long time and really missed.
And Conghua stubbornly refused to leave, standing beside Jian Zhiqing, occasionally wagging its tail and then whimpering a few times.
"Go back, otherwise you won’t get any," Jian Zhiqing squinted his eyes slightly; although it was meant as a warning, the voice was as gentle as a feather lightly falling, with a hint of spring breeze, causing Conghua to whine and then scatter its four legs, running to lie down in its own room.
Qin Xiangnuan was startled; the dog seemed to be not only fond of food and lazy, but now it seemed a bit cunning.
Most of the sauce-covered ribs were eaten by Jian Zhiqing. Fortunately, Qin Xiangnuan knew that sometimes Jian Zhiqing couldn’t control his cravings; it was already late, so it’s best not to eat too much.
"Conghua, let’s go," after finishing eating, he took Conghua out for a walk to digest the food.
"Right," Jian Zhiqing suddenly remembered something, he walked into his room, took out an envelope, "This is from Teacher Wang for you," he placed the envelope in front of Qin Xiangnuan and then left with Conghua.
Qin Xiangnuan took the envelope, which was quite thick. Actually, when Jian Zhiqing handed it to her, she already knew what was inside; it was the money from selling Spring Festival couplets. She put the envelope back in her room and then started cleaning up the table. After washing the dishes, she returned to her room, took the envelope, and took out everything inside.
Inside was money, both coins and bills, but mostly bills, along with a piece of paper.
The note was written in a very handsome script.
pairs of Spring Festival couplets sold; among them, 1000 pairs sold for 2 yuan each, 3000 pairs sold for one yuan each, and another 200 pairs altogether sold for 180 yuan, bought in bulk by an organization.
The total earnings were 5180 yuan; here is 2530 yuan.
Qin Xiangnuan didn’t count the money, she trusted Teacher Wang’s integrity, but this time, the sale was really substantial. She wrote Spring Festival couplets in her spare time, typically writing a few pairs each day, and sometimes, when the mood struck her, she could write dozens of pairs, which was why she could amass so many so quickly.
The over two thousand yuan would be enough for Teacher Wang’s living expenses for quite some time.
She opened a drawer, placed the money inside, then picked up a book and lay down to read it. As she read, she started to feel tired, wondering if continuing this way would make her end up fat like Conghua.
Right, on that thought, she realized that recently her chest had actually started to grow.
And she was growing at a terrifying speed, it seemed not long ago she was flat-chested, but now she looked like a steamed bun. As for the medicine, she thought she might keep taking it, at least not remain flat because that wouldn’t look good in clothes.
Of course, she didn’t want them too big either, she wasn’t a dairy cow after all.
She tossed the book away and burrowed into the covers. It was a bit cold, and she planned to buy an electric blanket tomorrow. She really missed the heated brick bed at her old home, and thought about installing one herself, but that was just a thought - there was nothing to burn here, and it wasn’t like the countryside where cornstalks were everywhere.
Drowsily, she didn’t know when she fell asleep, but when she woke up, it was early morning.
Fortunately, the weather was nice today. She took the opportunity to air the quilts and stuff in the yard. The main reason she bought the Siheyuan was for the large yard, which made hanging laundry very convenient.
The rope was a bit high though, she couldn’t reach it and had unsuccessfully tried to hang the quilt on it for a while. She tiptoed trying to hang the quilt, just then, a hand reached out from nowhere and helped her hang it.
"Being tall is definitely an advantage," Chun Xiangnuan sighed, even her clothes require more fabric.
"I think you’re done growing, aren’t you?"
Jian Zhiqing placed his hand on top of his head and then compared it to his chest, noting how short the little girl really was.
"I guess not growing anymore," Qin Xiangnuan was used to it, she tugged at her hair, and with the morning light, even her strands of hair seemed to be coated with a pale warm gold. The dry branches that used to be on the tree seemed to come to life as well.
Jian Zhiqing helped her to sun the quilt, his eyes warmed, much like the sunlight at that moment, not too bright but melting the chill a bit.
"Brother Jian, I need hard labor," Qin Xiangnuan tipped on her toes and patted the quilt she had hanged.
"How about a big meal? I’ll treat you to a meal," Qin Xiangnuan blinked her eyes, her face still chubby with baby fat, but her expression was truly cute, if only she knew.
"Deal," Jian Zhiqing rolled up his sleeves, "You mean clean up the house, right?"
"Yes," Qin Xiangnuan nodded. It was too difficult to do it alone; more hands made lighter work, and having ready labor here and not using it would be foolish.
What she didn’t anticipate was that hiring one laborer would result in one big and one small coming along.
Jian Zhiqin and Taotao arrived. Jian Zhiqin was a diligent kid, able to do chores like sweeping, dishwashing, laundry, and even feeding the dog. However, Taotao could only eat and suck on his fingers.
Qin Xiangnuan gave him a small stool to sit and play by himself. Taotao was happy, constantly chirping about their performances, even his teacher said he was a little star, his pockets always full of candies, seemingly gifts from the little girls in kindergarten.
So young and already a charmer—what a promising future.
As for Jian Zhiqin, he was still the hardworking boy. The Jians had strange family rules; women reign supreme in the house, perhaps because the Jians rarely had daughters. There was only Jian Li among the three generations, and she was pampered like a pearl in the eye from childhood. Grandpa Jian and Grandma Jian passed away early, but Jian Ming was absolutely devoted to this sister. Even after getting married, she could still reign in the Jians’ house.
It was a pity though, in Jian Zhiqing’s generation, they were all bald, no girls. No wonder, when Li Qiuhua was pregnant, Jian Zhiqing kept wishing for a little sister, and Jian Ming always wanted a sweet daughter, yet they ended up having Jian Zhiqin.
