Chapter 175: The Rich Sister Comes Again
Chapter 175: Chapter 175: The Rich Sister Comes Again
"We have so many buns at home, just steam them tomorrow,"
"Mom, don’t worry about it, I’m almost done. You should go back to sleep."
Qin Yue couldn’t persuade her, and though she offered to stay and help, Jhiang Yuan wouldn’t let her.
She was making large buns with green pepper and eggplant filling, obviously not something her mother should help with, otherwise it couldn’t be explained away.
After being busy for half the day, she made two steamer baskets worth, about twenty buns in total.
She wrapped the remaining filling in cling film and froze it.
There was enough for several more meals; in the morning, she could make a tomato soup, cucumber salad, and stir-fried chicken feather vegetable.
A delightful meal for sure, but it meant getting up early.
When the buns came out of the steamer, Jhiang Yuan couldn’t help feeling pleased.
She could cook a bit, but seldom made such complicated dishes, so this was relatively successful.
The buns were steaming hot, and she couldn’t resist having one while making herself a bowl of egg soup.
With added tomato and chicken feather vegetable, the aroma was enticing.
Just as she was about to enjoy her late-night snack, the monitor suddenly showed movement.
Someone there?
She hurried over to check, and saw that the person had just gently knocked on the door, without any other actions.
Head bowed, it was impossible to make out who it was.
However, the clothes were familiar, and as Jhiang Yuan rapidly searched her memories, a particular person came to mind.
She hurried out, wondering why this person would visit at such an hour.
The door was opened, and the woman outside was visibly agitated.
"Young lady, sorry to disturb you. You haven’t gone to bed yet, have you?"
"No, what’s the matter?"
Upon being asked, the visitor wasted no time.
"It’s like this, I’d like to buy some food from you. Sorry to trouble you."
As she spoke, she handed over a checkered carry-on bag.
Jhiang Yuan looked on without moving, and the woman quickly crouched down to open the bag.
My God, it was all money.
"There’s a million in here, I know money isn’t worth much now. You just give me whatever is good."
"Sorry, we don’t have any extra food at home."
Last time, she had sold quite a bit because she needed the money.
But now, it wasn’t so important.
"I know you have some, young lady. A blizzard is coming. I’m not well and can’t go out. Don’t worry, as soon as I take the food, I’ll leave immediately and won’t bother you.
We’ve dealt with each other before, you know I won’t talk nonsense."
Her words were sincere, her demeanor genuine.
After a moment’s thought, Jhiang Yuan nodded.
"Alright, wait here."
She had been making buns, the scent of food all over her; the woman certainly couldn’t miss it.
A million was a lot, and the woman did indeed seem reasonable, just as she had claimed.
Probably what she took last time was running out.
Jhiang Yuan went back inside and returned with ten bags of instant noodles.
They were the most ordinary kind, which normally cost five yuan a bag at the supermarket.
Now priced at a hundred thousand a bag, they had increased by hundreds of times.
The woman had been waiting all along, staying alert to her surroundings. Seeing Jhiang Yuan return, hope filled her eyes.
"I don’t have anything extra, make do with these!"
"That’s enough, thank you so much, young lady.
Oh, and I’ve heard some people talking about coming over here in the next couple of days. I didn’t catch the whole conversation,
but it definitely wasn’t anything good. You should be on your guard."
How come there’s an unexpected gain when selling something?
Jhiang Yuan, holding to the principle of "Better to kill a thousand by mistake than to let one go," began to inquire about the specifics.
"Who are they, and who told you about them?"
"I don’t know them, I just know they’re from the twelfth floor. They said if it’s possible, they’d take care of the twenty-first level, that way we could get through the blizzard."
The twelfth floor, that would be Old Wu.
"Alright, Sister, thank you. This will also be the last time; you shouldn’t come here anymore in the future.
Also, with the blizzard coming, you should take extra precautions, maybe stock up on some firewood if possible."
The woman knew this was Jhiang Yuan’s way of returning the favor.
She was on her own, frequently keeping to herself.
"Okay, I understand, Miss. Don’t worry, I certainly won’t come to disturb you again.
After this bad weather is over, I’ll treat you to a meal."
Jhiang Yuan waved her hand dismissively, not sure about whether the weather would actually improve.
"No need. You have paid for your purchase, and it’s a done deal. There’s no need for any talk of personal favors."
With that, the two parted ways. The sister looked around cautiously and vigilantly.
She also hurried home; it was already past twelve o’clock, and it was cold enough to freeze someone to death.
It had only been a few minutes, yet the buns had frozen over, despite her home frequently having the fire going.
The corners of the kitchen, alternating between hot and cold, were icy.
This was despite Jhiang Xingzhi’s regular tidying up; other families might not be so well-kept.
Back to sleep, as there was important work to do tomorrow.
Qin Yue knew Jhiang Yuan had made buns. When she got up the next morning and saw there were also some chicken feather vegetables and chopped tomatoes ready.
She didn’t suspect anything, just assumed they were brought down from the attic.
She warmed up the buns and made a soup.
In cold weather, eating soupy foods can provide some warmth.
Jhiang Xingzhi also got up early; he had the ice cart to fix later.
It was wrecked by some people, and it was uncertain if it could be repaired.
If it couldn’t be fixed in time, they’d have to rush to make a couple more while there was still time.
If the blizzard truly hit, going outside would become difficult.
Jhiang Yuan didn’t sleep in much either, as meals were early these days, with dinner no later than nine.
"Daughter, are these buns filled with eggplant?"
"Yes, Mom. Remember how we froze a bunch? Yesterday, I suddenly felt like having that taste."
As she spoke, Jhiang Yuan grabbed some dried shrimp and sprinkled half a handful into the soup, bringing out an instant burst of flavor.
Eager to help with the cooking and set the table, she was worried that Qin Yue might delve deeper.
So, as soon as they finished eating, she bolted, faster than a rabbit.
She also took her daughter with her.
Zhang Kaiyang came to open the door and was surprised to see Jhiang Yuan and Xiao Nuan.
"So early? Sister Yuan, little one, come in quickly..."
They were just about to have their meal because Fan Qing’s arrival meant the two families were preparing to eat separately, though they hadn’t settled on details.
"It’s nothing big; I saw Qingqing didn’t bring any clothes, so I gathered a few things for her."
The day before, Fan Qing had worn some pajamas that she had previously given to Kaiyang.
What she wore at the rescue center, she had already thrown away, and Fan Yao had taken away two more pieces yesterday, so she didn’t have many clothes left.
"That’s great, Sister Yuan. You’re always so timely. Maybe we should start calling you ’Timely Rain.’"
’Timely Rain’—Song Jiang. That wasn’t a good omen.
"What are you blabbering about, making up nicknames now?"
While speaking, Fan Qing also came over.
Jhiang Yuan quickly called out to her, while simultaneously opening the bag in her hand.
