Chapter 115: Being Followed

Chapter 115: Chapter 115: Being Followed

Song Yi didn’t interfere much, as Jhiang Yuan had her own ideas, something he had understood beforehand.

After discussing their plans, they prepared to leave the next day, during daylight.

They weren’t heading to the Survivor Rescue Center, but many others were interested in going.

The next day, at nine in the morning, they finally set out.

It wasn’t that they didn’t want to leave earlier, it was just too cold.

Now, the temperature was highest in the afternoon.

Around two o’clock, but it still dropped to about negative twenty degrees—imagine the concept of your breath freezing.

Each day was colder than the last, making life increasingly difficult.

This time, they definitely needed to get more cash.

If it came down to it, they would have to take their parents and Xiao Nuan into the space with them.

So, the pressure on her for this operation was rather significant.

Jhiang Yuan also didn’t dare to be careless, wearing her thickened thermostatic clothing topped with hand warmers in such cold weather.

Then she put on a fleece-lined outdoor thermal coat, a lambswool vest, and finally, a super thick weatherproof jacket.

She also wore waterproof, slip-resistant, thick snow boots and for extra precaution, heated insoles.

She carried a goose-down hat with an integrated fur layer along with a matching scarf and gloves.

From head to toe, she was covered up, leaving only her eyes visible.

Thoroughly layered inside and out three times over, she felt like a ball.

Just reaching the seventh floor, they ran into some acquaintances.

It was Sister Li from 1101 and her family of three; Ye Mianmian was quite happy and greeted them.

"Sister Li, are you guys going out?"

The mother and daughters, upon seeing the group of four, were also delighted, and the two children politely greeted them.

A life saved is a debt forever remembered.

"Mianmian, we’re planning to check out the situation outside and are thinking of heading to the rescue center."

It turned out to be the case; as a vulnerable group, they had latched onto a glimmer of hope with the official news.

"Is that so? Well, that’s good, when do you plan to leave?"

"If the ice surface is safe, we’d like to leave today. Are you going? We could go together."

Sister Li extended the invitation, knowing their safety would be ensured if they accompanied the group of four.

"We won’t be going over, it’s not convenient at home..."

Ye Mianmian didn’t say too much, stopping as soon as she got the point across.

"Sigh, I’m not sure what it’s like over there.

Even if it’s tough, as long as we don’t starve or freeze to death, that’ll be enough."

As they were speaking, several more people arrived.

Among them, two young men were preparing to go to the rescue center, well-equipped against the cold.

The four of them tactfully stepped aside to give them room, allowing them to descend first to see what conditions were like below.

The two young men were action-oriented, and perhaps fearing the group would target them, especially since the pair had brought two suitcases.

What could be packed now but food, clothing, or valuables?

The next moment brought an eye-opening surprise for Jhiang Yuan.

The two actually skated away holding onto their suitcases—turns out they could be used as tools!

The multi-directional wheels were flexible, and while it was wobbly on the ice and one could easily take a tumble,

the suitcases worked surprisingly well.

Not only could they help maintain balance and prevent falls, but they also sped up the journey—a perfect synergy indeed!

Youthful minds turned out to be more resourceful; she felt inferior.

Kaiyang, standing beside, was also looking eager to try.

Following on, three more people went down, not carrying anything, likely in search of supplies.

"Sister Li, I still need to go out for a bit, so I’ll head out first."

"Okay, okay, you go on with your tasks..."

Everyone below was fine, so they would be too.

Ye Mianmian was still somewhat excited as she went out again.

The ice surface was just below the seventh floor window, just a step away.

As the four of them left, they unexpectedly found the residential area to be bustling.

Not to mention anything else, there was at least some "human presence."

Not daring to be careless, they headed straight for the small gate next to building fifteen, the closest route to take from there.

"Brother Song, there really are quite a few people out today," someone remarked.

"Hmm, be extra vigilant..."

Song Yi did not think this was a good sign, but was rather tense.

Once outside, the situation was even less optimistic.

The row of shops facing them had been completely submerged, now frozen over.

People were coming and going on the side, brazenly.

Ye Mianmian didn’t know if they were shopkeepers or people searching for things, but she felt relieved that they had come over before.

Most supplies were gone, but there were quite a few small shops on the other side, where they could still scrounge up some items.

This was only in regards to the side facing the buildings above; the stores below were as if they had vanished into the ice.

People on the street looked their way.

Even from that distance, they could feel the intense gaze.

Even more so, some people even started following them.

Song Yi remained silent, taking the lead, with Jhiang Yuan and Ye Mianmian in the middle and Zhang Kaiyang bringing up the rear.

Their pace quickened. The ground was slick, making it hard to walk steadily. Jhiang Yuan nearly fell several times.

Still, Song Yi steadily supported her while those following them persisted, and their number grew from one to two.

There were two routes up the mountain, and they had to shake off these two followers at the crossroads.

There was a bus stop sign near the crossroads, with a small flower bed beside it, half of which had sunk into the ice.

The central green strip, however, could provide some cover.

Without hesitating, Song Yi led them directly there, to a fan-shaped green strip.

One path lay to the left and the other to the right, each leading up the mountain.

The two pursuers were not far off and kept an eye on them as they entered. They hesitated for a moment beside the entrance before plunging in.

Song Yi was right behind the first tree, just two meters from where they entered, while the other three quickly hid themselves separately.

"Don’t move..."

The man didn’t expect them to be so close and had focused ahead, where the trees were thicker. Caught off guard, he was choked by Song Yi.

He had come in after the first man, who spun around when he heard the noise, only to find his companion already seized.

He was in a dilemma, uncertain whether to advance or retreat.

Jhiang Yuan, being the second closest, also came out wielding a military shovel for leverage on the slippery ground.

The Tang Sword was not put aside, but was instead strapped to her back, covered with a bag and barely noticeable.

"Don’t misunderstand, we are just..."

"Snap..."

The man’s words were cut short as Song Yi abruptly twisted his neck, followed by the muffled sound of his body hitting the ground.

"You actually, actually..."

"Shut up..."

Jhiang Yuan did not strike, but threatened with the shovel.

Zhang Kaiyang and Ye Mianmian emerged too, everyone bundled up tightly, unrecognizable.

"Great heroes, please spare me, I’m just out looking for something to eat, I mean no harm, I beg of you," the man pleaded, kneeling down.

Ye Mianmian glanced at Song Yi, feeling there was no need for such ruthless measures and was about to speak.
