Chapter 85: Chapter 85: Disgusting Harvest
Han Yi and his group’s greatest advantage was that their abilities were stronger than those of ordinary Superpower Users, which, of course, could not be separated from the help of Crystal Cores.
Han Yi was not naive enough to think that the base was friendly to them because of his former identity as one of the Han Family’s young masters. Once the base had stronger Superpower Users, they, he feared, would no longer have the right to say "no" to those in power. Just like Han Rui at this moment, who had to join the so-called ability team in order to earn a place in the base.
This world had never been about reason. If you want freedom, if you want to say no, first, you must be strong.
What they needed to do now was to enhance themselves as quickly as possible before the base solved the mystery of the Crystal Cores. That way, they could avoid becoming the prey.
What Lu Changyuan thought was exactly what Han Yi thought; after getting Han Yi’s approval, Lu Changyuan had Xiao Jian go through the formalities at the labor center.
Accepting tasks wasn’t as simple as just accepting them: it required card swiping for records, registering the names and numbers of all those participating, along with relevant information, and writing down an estimated time. If one was driving out, they needed to register the vehicle model and license plate number. Lastly, the staff would report this information, and if the task wasn’t handed over within the estimated time, then the task would fail and reappear on screen. If there was no return after one week beyond the estimated time, the base would declare you dead, and your residence and property in the base would be reclaimed.
Thus, most people tended to write a few more days on their estimated times. Of course, writing too much time was also not acceptable, as the staff would directly reject your task application during the review.
However, there were also some tasks without time constraints, such as collecting materials like food, gasoline, diesel, and medicines; these were all materials constantly needed, and with limited military manpower, it was impossible to gather such items daily. Therefore, these tasks were issued to enable capable civilians to alleviate the pressure on the base.
Xiao Jian used his resident Life Card at the labor center three times, and by the time he appeared at the service window for the third time, the staff member really wanted to say: are you joking? Taking on three tasks at once? But, when the staffer saw the list of participants and their numbers filled out on the form, he swallowed his words—five people, four of whom were Superpower Users, all with values over five hundred thousand! And there was even a MAX!
The range of the measuring device was 0–2,000,000. Ordinary Superpower Users had values ranging from several thousand to several hundred thousand; those over a hundred thousand were considered decently talented. The ability team selected by the base averaged around two hundred thousand, with the highest apparently not exceeding three hundred fifty thousand. So, what did MAX mean? It meant that this person’s value was over two million! Ten times the average! That was insane!
Why wasn’t the device’s range designed to be larger? But then, who uses a household scale to weigh something over a thousand pounds? Even among humans, the heaviest were only about four hundred pounds or so. The designers of the scales did not anticipate there could be freaks weighing over a thousand pounds!
The staff member suddenly really wanted Xiao Jian to help get a signature...
...
Shortly after Xiao Jian returned, Zhou Yan and his wife also completed their checkout procedures and officially moved into this small, rural villa.
Having a doctor in the team was undoubtedly a great stabilizer. They would often be out on missions, and injuries were inevitable, so keeping a doctor at home would be beneficial sooner or later. In fact, if conditions allowed, Han Yi would even consider setting up his own medical team.
In such an apocalyptic world, two things held the lifelines of humanity: food and medical care. However, Han Yi felt the timing was not yet ripe, but they would have their chance in the future.
The next day, Han Yi took Han Jiaojiao, Yan Xiao, Xiao Jian, and Bai Kairui—five people in total.
Lu Changyuan, Zhou Yan, and Yu Wanxi were left to stay at home.
When leaving the base, they encountered Zhu Changfu, who was also about to go on a mission with his junior, and it seemed he had not joined the ability team either.
Since everyone was in their cars, they merely waved through the car windows and didn’t stop to chat; their vehicles headed in different directions.
The area near Beicheng Base was very desolate due to its being a newly developing zone. The sides of the road were lined with many demolished old buildings; new buildings had not yet risen, facing the apocalypse. Fortunately, the nearby highway had been completed early.
Han Jiaojiao sat in the car, occasionally looking at the bowls in the back—two large glass bowls nestled in a big cardboard box, surrounded by lots of scrap paper and foam to prevent collision, each filled with soil and two eggs partially buried.
Han Jiaojiao found it strange. This time, while everyone else was loading ammunition and weapons into the back of the car, she alone had placed two bowls of eggs there... and—no one asked!
Did they not find it odd?
Even the nosiest Yan Xiao saw them and just smiled without saying anything, asking her nothing. It was incredible...
Han Jiaojiao had a feeling as if they had all secretly agreed on something.
—The closer they got to the city area, the more intense the pungent smell became. Gradually, corpses of alien species began appearing on the road. Han Yi remained silent while Xiao Jian kept driving straight ahead. The rotting corpses were soft, emitting a noxious blue-black viscous fluid as the car tires rolled over them, and soon, the chassis of the SUV, not as high as an off-road vehicle’s, was covered with the foul-smelling liquid.
When the car reached a large roundabout at the intersection, the ground was littered with corpses; it became impossible for their vehicle to move any further ahead, even the friction of the tires against the decaying and sticky corpses during braking produced a chilling squeal.
"Let’s get out," Han Yi said.
Yan Xiao opened the car door only to find there was no place to step down as the ground was covered with corpses... layers upon layers, some so rotten they stuck to each other, as disgusting as it could get.
But turning around, he saw Han Jiaojiao jumping out of the car unfazed, her hair swiftly tied back in a bun, with gloves on and one hand flicking a dagger, another holding a sealed bag, looking all ready to go.
Couldn’t he even measure up to a little girl?!
Yan Xiao gritted his teeth, steeled his heart, and also got out. The soft, squishy sensation under his feet made his knees go weak.
Han Yi wandered leisurely around the area with a can of spray paint, occasionally stopping to spray a white mark on a specific corpse. As others saw it, they targeted the marked spot and started digging.
Han Jiaojiao was the fastest digger, likely due to her proficiency with the dagger. Xiao Jian was slightly slower, while Bai Kairui initially reacted like Yan Xiao. However, once he overcame his mental barrier, he cheerfully started sprinting around the site. Not wanting to be outdone by Bai Kairui, Yan Xiao began to dig earnestly, slowly getting into the groove.
They dug in that area for over an hour, collecting eighty-seven crystal cores. Although most of the cores were small, the total number was still impressive. Seeing the bulging sealed bags, everyone started smiling, the nauseous feeling inside fading considerably.
Han Yi grabbed Han Jiaojiao’s hand and opened the Ring Space, and the robust HUMVEE armored vehicle landed on the ground with a bang!
"Turn around, let’s head back."
"Brother Han, aren’t we going to the hospital anymore?" Yan Xiao asked.
Han Yi opened the back of the SUV, picked up Han Jiaojiao’s precious eggs, and said, "The hospitals in this part of the city have already been emptied by the military. Let’s change to another district."
Upon hearing this, everyone transferred the ammunition and weapons from the SUV to the HUMVEE.
Switching to another district, if it was a place not yet swept by the military, meant that it would be teeming with alien species.
