Chapter 485: Chapter 467: As Long as It’s the Truth

After she got out of Lu Jinsheng’s car, the moment Zhao Xuan entered the Lu Family’s Siheyuan courtyard, she saw strawberries planted on a trapezoidal rack in the corner of the yard, each as invitingly red as the ones Lu Jinsheng had just given her to eat.

She felt a sense of closeness, and her heart calmed down slightly.

"You actually know how to come back?"

Hearing the noise outside, Xia Yuan came out fuming with a bamboo stick in hand, swearing to give Lu Jinsheng a memory he wouldn’t forget. As soon as Lu Jinsheng saw the bamboo stick in her hands, he knew it was bad news. He quickly leaped to hide behind Zhao Xuan, pushing her forward slightly, with a coquettish expression on his face, "Mom, look, I brought your daughter-in-law back for you."

"Auntie, hello, I am Zhao Xuan."

Zhao Xuan never expected her first encounter with Lu Jinsheng’s mother, the lady president of Lu Group, to be in such a situation. She couldn’t help but awkwardly smile, trying her best to remain composed, and politely greeted her.

"Uh, hello."

Xia Yuan looked back and forth between the two with a mix of surprise and suspicion, her eyes particularly lingering on Zhao Xuan, who seemed somewhat nervous but was doing her best to remain calm. Suddenly, Xia Yuan’s impression of her improved significantly.

She looked alright, but with her son coming back with a "daughter-in-law" out of the blue, she’d be a fool to believe there were no issues. She hoped not to end up with false joy, which would be even more annoying. So, unreservedly, she frowned at Lu Jinsheng, "Spill it, where did you kidnap this young girl from?"

"What kidnap? That sounds horrible. Mom, she’s your future daughter-in-law, no fakes," said Lu Jinsheng, sticking his head out from behind Zhao Xuan, clearly unhappy.

"Haven’t you always been longing for a daughter-in-law? I finally found one for you, so why are you still behaving like this? Mom, your image, think about your image. With this attitude, your future daughter-in-law is going to have a terrible first impression of you."

Xia Yuan was taken aback for a moment and, looking at the bamboo stick in her hand, suddenly felt it was awkward to continue holding it. Undecided whether to put it down or not, she eventually tossed it to a corner of the wall. After giving Lu Jinsheng a warning glare, she then turned to Zhao Xuan with a friendly smile, "Zhao Xuan, right? Come inside and take a seat."

As they took their seats in the living room, Xia Yuan scrutinized Zhao Xuan, "Relax a bit. What would you like to drink?"

"Uh, fine, anything will do," said Zhao Xuan, trying to boost her confidence inwardly. But once she actually sat in the Lu Family’s Siheyuan living room, face-to-face with Lu Jinsheng’s mother, Xia Yuan, she still felt involuntarily uneasy.

What if she wasn’t accepted?

Although Lu Jinsheng had said he would still give her the million for her grandfather’s treatment, she was still worried that if Xia Yuan rejected her, the promised million might not materialize.

There are no gains without causes in this world.

"Then let’s have fruit juices for everyone, and a bowl of sour yogurt fruit salad each," instructed Xia Yuan to the aunt by her side.

Three glasses of mango juice were swiftly served, along with a small bowl for everyone, garnished with mint leaves.

Zhao Xuan looked over and saw on her small tray a clear crystal bowl with beads of water on its walls. There was also a silver spoon on the tray.

In the crystal bowl, thick white yogurt mixed with bright red halved strawberries, chunks of golden mango, soft and mushy pieces of banana, and plump, round watermelon bits made for an irresistible treat...

"Thank you."

Zhao Xuan habitually whispered her thanks, and the auntie smiled lightly and whispered back, "You’re welcome," before quickly withdrawing.

A moment of admiration flashed in Xia Yuan’s eyes; the girl in front of her seemed to come from a decent background, a fact evident from her attire and demeanor, suggesting she was well-bred.

It looked like her son had really gone to some trouble to cope, at least he hadn’t randomly pulled someone off the street to get through the meeting with her.

She was certain the girl was brought by her son to deal with her, mainly because she was sure her son hadn’t known this girl before today. Moreover, the lack of intimacy between them, and the absence of the sticky affection and silent understanding unique to lovers, gave it away.

"Where are my dad and my sister?"

The atmosphere was so quiet it was almost frightening. Seeing Xia Yuan not in a hurry and leisurely eating her fruit salad with a silver spoon, Lu Jinsheng became somewhat restless.

"Your dad had to deal with some work at the company, and your sister is still at the Pei Family’s house with the three children. It’ll be a while before they can come back... Zhao Xuan, is the salad to your liking?"

Xia Yuan casually glanced at the somewhat uneasy Lu Jinsheng, while Zhao Xuan was quietly savoring her salad, looking rather sweet and thus more pleasing to the eye.

Xia Yuan’s fondness for Zhao Xuan suddenly increased—she liked how natural, genuine, and unpretentious the girl was.

"Mmm, every type of fruit is delicious," Zhao Xuan said, her eyes lingering on the now empty bowl, which was scraped clean even of the yogurt. She nodded, licking the corners of her mouth as if she still savored the taste.

She knew right away that each piece of fruit in it was of the highest quality and tasted superb. The use of yogurt as a mix-in made it cool and refreshing to eat, not at all heavy, and she could have easily eaten another large bowl.

Xia Yuan was amused by her transparent craving and couldn’t help but laugh, "Then have half more bowl, but don’t eat too much at once, as it’s too cold. If you like it, come by our house more often—I’ll tell the auntie to make it for you again."

"Okay, thank you, auntie," Zhao Xuan’s eyes brightened, and she immediately nodded, then suddenly felt a bit self-conscious about her greedy reaction and reined it in, stealthily glancing at Xia Yuan’s expression. Only after seeing no displeasure or disdain on her face did she breathe a sigh of relief.

Phew, that was close—you were too eager there. It’s your first visit; what if you scared her with your impropriety?

She internally chastised herself.

Zhao Xuan’s reaction did not escape Xia Yuan’s notice; she curved her lips upwards—what an interesting little girl indeed.

Xia Yuan’s mood improved, but she refrained from showing too much amusement for fear of scaring the girl away.

The household auntie quickly served them each another half bowl of yogurt fruit salad as per Xia Yuan’s instruction. After finishing the salad and wiping her mouth, Xia Yuan finally turned her gaze to Lu Jinsheng, leisurely asking, "Have you figured out how you’re going to confess to me?"

"Mom, can we not use the word ’confess’? It makes it sound like an interrogation," Lu Jinsheng said with a wry smile.

"Fine, just speak the truth, that’s all I ask," Xia Yuan nodded, her eyes clearly conveying a threat.
