Chapter 474: Chapter 456: Sudden Change

After distancing herself from Jenny and Huang Chenghou, Ye Man took the initiative to explain to Gu Feng the "grudge" she had with Jenny during high school, and then she pouted, "I’ve always been baffled about what I did to provoke her; why did she target me? I didn’t come from a distinguished family, and my grades were just above average. The luckiest I got was that I underperformed during the college entrance exams and ended up in a decent college, but why did that make me so unpopular?"

"Some people are just naturally incompatible. Since that’s the case, there’s no need for you to keep dwelling on her. It would only show that you care about her," Gu Feng narrowed his eyes, reminding himself to have someone look into this Jenny when he got a chance, to resolve the doubts that his wife had harbored for years. If that person persisted in being ungrateful, she couldn’t blame him if he played dirty.

"Care about her? To be honest, I really don’t want to deal with her at all, yet she slanders me behind my back while pretending to be close when we’re face to face, stepping on me as if it brings her pleasure. Who does that?"

Ye Man was still a little irate, but soon she started laughing joyfully, pulling Gu Feng into conversation and beginning to vent, "But today was truly gratifying. You have no idea how they treated me before. The moment you showed up, that man’s attitude changed drastically, and I saw Jenny’s face—it was priceless. Actually, she doesn’t even go by Jenny; she just didn’t like her old-fashioned real name..."

"What happened before?" Gu Feng was eager to know the details.

Ye Man elaborated, and as she spoke, her story grew longer. Gu Feng didn’t find her chatter annoying at all; in fact, he listened very attentively. The topic was still ongoing by the time they were supposed to meet with Huang Xiaoxiao and Ma Qin.

Huang Xiaoxiao and Ma Qin also knew Jenny, and they were aware that Ye Man’s pleasant high school years had been disrupted by her, to the point where she couldn’t make any close friends in her own class.

After a hearty venting session, Ye Man finally managed to relieve the frustration that had accumulated in her heart over the years.

Later, Ye Man suddenly became curious and seriously started inquiring about Gu Feng’s assets, only to discover that Gu Feng was much wealthier than she had imagined. Although his wealth couldn’t compete with a large enterprise like Lu Group, it was still significant in the realm of medium-sized businesses.

"Without my uncle’s strong support and the substantial resources he offered privately, my company couldn’t have developed this quickly in just a few years," Gu Feng didn’t shy away from acknowledging the influence Lu Aiguo had on his success.

"Having support is a kind of strength too."

Ye Man nodded, seeing nothing wrong with Gu Feng using the resources provided by Lu Aiguo, "If you have resources that can save you time in development and you don’t use them, that would be foolish. Besides, the fact that you were able to rise and grow quickly already proves your own abilities are not to be underestimated. I’m still proud of you."

"Do you really think so?" Gu Feng was taken aback when he heard Ye Man’s response.

"Of course," Ye Man nodded.

"Thank you," Gu Feng said, moved, as he hugged Ye Man tightly, "I have always felt that I couldn’t have come this far without them. I probably can’t ever repay the kindness my aunt and uncle have shown me in this lifetime."

"Are you really that self-deprecating?" Ye Man laughed, amused by his sentiment, and as she laughed, she struggled out of Gu Feng’s embrace and dodged him, "That’s not like you. I thought you’d be the one puffing out your chest and boasting, ’I’ve got connections; who should I fear?’"

"Why are you being so naughty? Is that really the image you have of me?" Gu Feng playfully griped, grinding his teeth.

"Haha..." Ye Man not only wasn’t scared but instead burst into laughter, then said seriously, "If you really feel indebted to my aunt and uncle, you should work even harder. Only when you truly grow stronger will you possibly be able to repay them one day, although I think my aunt and uncle support you out of affection, not with the expectation of getting something in return."

"You’re right," Gu Feng sighed.

"From now on, don’t keep saying that you owe my aunt and uncle. If they heard that, it would just make them sad. Some gratitude is too pale when expressed in words alone, and it feels too formal. It’s better to keep it in our hearts and show it through our actions," Ye Man said, her laughter subsiding as she became serious.

"...Yes, I will," Gu Feng said, his face showing real emotion for the first time as he pondered deeply, feeling incredibly fortunate to have such a wife.

In the days that followed, Ye Man’s phone suddenly started ringing more often, mostly with calls from her high school classmates. Invariably, they would ask about her boyfriend and then about whether she was getting married, before promptly pretending to be her close friends and asking for wedding invitations.

Ye Man was no fool; those people were Jenny’s fans, birds of a feather. How could she not know what was going on? She didn’t have much to do with them and hadn’t been in contact for years; there was no need to gather such people around her, and she naturally refused them all one by one.

Ye Man had no qualms about rejecting them, while on the other end, Jenny was so furious she wanted to smash her phone. She had contacted so many classmates just for one wedding invitation, and yet she hadn’t managed to get her hands on a single one.

But she ultimately couldn’t bring herself to do it. At a time when pagers were still widely used, having a mobile phone was something to show off. And considering how Huang Chenghou had recently become distinctly colder toward her, she had a premonition that if she didn’t get Ye Man’s wedding invitation this time, their relationship would be over. At this point, expecting Huang Chenghou to buy her a new phone was nothing short of wishful thinking.

Jenny gritted her teeth with hatred but couldn’t find a solution. She was starting to regret her past actions—if she had known this would happen, she wouldn’t have targeted Ye Man so deliberately. Instead, she could have befriended her, perhaps even using Ye Man to get close to a rich, handsome bachelor like Gu Feng, and steal him away.

Every time she thought of how a diamond bachelor like Gu Feng, handsome and wealthy, was wasted on someone inferior to her like Ye Man, she was infuriated.

While Jenny was still scheming against Ye Man, she suddenly found herself in trouble.

First, the gossip about her gold-digging over the years erupted in her neighborhood. The stories were detailed, tracing back to her junior high days, gossiping about every man she had been involved with—without missing a single one.

Good news stays within walls, bad news travels a thousand miles.

Jenny’s father, in a rage, chased her out of the house with a broom when she came home. Her brothers and sisters-in-law and other family members watched from the sidelines with disdain, as if she were a disgrace. Only her mother, holding her hand and crying, persuaded her not to come back for a while.

Jenny was livid. When everyone was happy using the money she brought in, why didn’t anyone chase her out with a broom? She felt wronged. She tried to call Huang Chenghou, but couldn’t get through no matter what. As for looking for someone else, that was out of the question, and even the love nest she shared with Huang Chenghou was now being pestered for rent by the landlord...

With a series of setbacks, Jenny was stunned and could no longer afford to think about Ye Man.
