Chapter 469: Chapter 451: The Biased Grandma Ye
"All the invitations have been written out; this stack is for classmates and friends, the rest are all for relatives. Tomorrow is the weekend, so we can go distribute these to your classmates and friends."
As soon as Ye Man got in the car and sat down, Gu Feng helped her fasten her seatbelt and then handed her a large stack of completed wedding invitations.
Ye Man casually picked one up and unfolded it, revealing an intricately exquisite big red invitation with gold embossing; aside from the guests’ names, the inner page was printed with their wedding date in both the lunar and Gregorian calendars, as well as the day of the week.
Upon counting the days, Ye Man realized that the chosen auspicious date coincidentally was two weeks later, on a Sunday.
As she flipped through the stack of classmates and friends’ invitations, she reorganized them in order and said, "Mm, our parents will take care of the relatives’ invitations. There’s only one table’s worth for my classmates and friends. If all goes well, we can finish distributing them tomorrow. I’ll call those I can tonight to let them know. Oh right, we need to find time to treat Huang Xiaoxiao and Ma Qin to a meal; otherwise, I’m afraid they won’t let me off the hook."
"Should we invite them together or separately? How about we schedule it for tomorrow, either lunch or dinner?" Gu Feng asked casually as he drove. He knew of those two; Ye Man mentioned them quite often, but he never had the chance to meet them in person.
"Together, one is a primary school classmate, and the other is from middle school. They know each other as well, and we get together from time to time, so there’s no need to separate them. As for the time, I’ll discuss it with them first and let you know." Ye Man picked out the invitations for those two and placed them on top.
As the car entered the residential complex, Ye Man and Gu Feng ran into a familiar neighbor from the third floor of their building. The two of them politely greeted the neighbor, who responded cheerily and then turned to Ye Man, "Xiaoman, I just saw your grandparents going up."
"The grandparents are here? We didn’t hear anything from our parents about this when we left in the morning. I wonder what they’re here for this time?"
After thanking the neighbor, Ye Man expressed her concerns to Gu Feng as they continued on their way. Her grandparents and aunt’s family had met Gu Feng after their relationship became official, on a day they invited them out for a meal.
Ye Man was worried because her grandparents didn’t usually like visiting their home; it was almost always because there was an issue, and often it wasn’t a pleasant one.
"Let’s go up and see," Gu Feng squeezed Ye Man’s hand reassuringly. He had observed at the meal that Ye Man’s grandparents didn’t hold much regard for Ye Man and her parents, but they had shown some restraint that day.
Upon reaching their floor, before they could enter the apartment, they heard Ye Man’s mother’s agitated voice: "No, I don’t agree."
"Whether you agree or not doesn’t matter. You just have a daughter; do you still think you can call the shots in the Ye Family?" came the authoritative voice of Ye Man’s grandmother.
"Mom and Dad, let’s talk about this another day when they’re not around, or when we come to your place. They’re about to come back now; it’s not appropriate to discuss this in front of them," Ye Man’s father’s voice conveyed suppressed frustration.
Ye Man and Gu Feng both stopped in their tracks and exchanged a glance.
"What’s inappropriate about it? Haven’t we discussed this many times before? Have you agreed? Tell me, which family gives away their daughter like you do? Not only do you not keep the betrothal gifts, but you also offer extra?" Ye Man’s grandmother was fuming with anger.
"Dowry is one thing, at most you give a few thousand yuan for some quilts, chamber pots, towels, washbasins, and such, isn’t that enough? And you actually want to ruin our family’s finances by gifting a house as well? Maomao is also reaching the age of marriage, and he doesn’t even have a place to live yet. If you don’t agree with me today, I’ll wait for them to come back and we’ll tell them ourselves."
"What does Maomao not having a matrimonial house have to do with our family? He’s not my son, why should I give him a house?" Ye Man’s mother’s voice quivered, clearly out of anger.
Ye Man’s brows furrowed slightly as she took out her keys and inserted them straight into the lock. Upon seeing the two people appear, the voices inside the house suddenly stopped.
Grandma Ye’s gaze shifted evasively. While she might seem "tough" when facing Ye Man’s parents, she couldn’t help feeling guilty in front of Ye Man, especially since this granddaughter not only had the ability to attend a prestigious university but also landed a good job. Now, she even found a son-in-law that others wouldn’t dare to dream of.
"Grandpa and Grandma, you’ve arrived. Is there anything you need?" Gu Feng greeted politely.
"Ah." Grandpa and Grandma Ye hurriedly responded with a smile, exchanging glances before Grandpa Ye said, "Nothing, just came by to check in."
"Grandpa and Grandma, have you eaten yet? Dad, will there be enough food for tonight? If not, why don’t we all go out to eat? It’s not often that Grandpa and Grandma visit."
Ye Man spoke with a smile, "Gu Feng, it seems that seafood congee from the nearby restaurant we visited the other day wasn’t too bad, and Grandpa and Grandma both like it."
"Oh my, why spend that money to eat out? Today, we can just ask your mom to cook us a bowl of noodles at home—it’s enough. If we really want seafood, let’s do it another day when we can invite your aunt’s family too. It’ll be more lively with everyone there," Grandma Ye said hurriedly, thinking that her daughter’s family would also be starting their dinner soon.
"Okay," Ye Man replied with a smile.
Such shamelessness. Her daughter clearly spoke of having seafood congee, yet her mother-in-law stubbornly twisted it into ’having seafood,’ which is so expensive, and even mentioned inviting the aunt and her entire family. Ye Man’s mother listened to her daughter’s agreement, filled with resentment, glanced at Ye Man’s father, but ultimately didn’t make any attempt to stop it.
Well, this is going to cost another significant amount.
Even though her daughter and son-in-law aren’t short on money, it’s still not right to squander it this way, especially not on treating those people. It simply isn’t worth it.
The Ye Family’s meals were always prepared with attention to detail, usually ready for Ye Man and Gu Feng as soon as they got home. Eventually, the food wasn’t enough, so Ye Man’s father cooked up a big pot of loach noodle soup to make do.
Loach noodle soup is a famous staple dish from a certain region in the south, which Ye Man’s father had learned incidentally from a chef. It’s convenient and quick to make, and tastes quite good too. In the end, the big pot of noodles was finished, while the other dishes were left over.
After dinner, Grandma Ye couldn’t hold back and once again brought up the old issue with Ye Man and Gu Feng. However, she spoke much more gently in front of them, even with a pleasing and pitiful tone, "Xiaoman, you know your brother Maomao is already in his twenties, but because he doesn’t have a house, the girl’s side won’t agree to get married. Look, he’s your only brother; if you don’t help him out, who will..."
"Grandma, I remember that cousin Maomao’s last name is Zhang, right? Could it be that he has already changed his surname to Ye and become my cousin on my father’s side, and my uncle’s family has no objection?" Ye Man interrupted Grandma Ye, asking with a look of surprise.
