Chapter 466: Chapter 448: Teaching You to Behave
No wonder.
Li Qing suddenly remembered that Ye Man was the one transferred from the confidential secretarial office. Although she was considered a "newcomer" in their department, she was actually an old employee of the Lu Family. If she really had connections or a background, she would have been promoted earlier, and certainly wouldn’t have had to wait until now.
With this thought, Li Qing’s expression relaxed even more, and she teased, "You’re really having a double celebration, with a promotion and a wedding at the same time. You should treat us to something, right?"
She saw Ye Man’s face grow even redder and couldn’t help but laugh out loud, leaning in to ask, "Little Ye, where is your boyfriend from, and what does he do? Will you live with your mother-in-law after getting married, or will it just be the two of you?"
"He, he’s running a small business."
Ye Man hesitated for a moment, somewhat unwilling to answer, but thinking about just having been transferred here, it wouldn’t be good to start off on the wrong foot with her colleagues. Besides, Li Qing had been quite nice to her these last two days. A little curiosity from her was normal, so eventually, she answered softly and honestly, "His family isn’t from here, but now everyone’s in S City. I guess we’ll all live together after the wedding."
"Oh, he runs a small business? What kind of business is it, and can it make money?" Li Qing asked with sudden interest, eager to know more.
Right, what kind of business was Gu Feng actually in?
Faced with this question, Ye Man was a bit puzzled herself. She recalled carefully the company name on the stock transfer agreement he gave her that day, but after thinking for a long time, she couldn’t remember.
So, all she could do was smile apologetically at Li Qing, "I, I didn’t ask in detail, but it should be enough to support the family, I guess?"
"You’re about to get married, and your boyfriend hasn’t even shared this with you?" Li Qing was surprised, looking at Ye Man as if she were looking at a fool, "How can you be so naive? You can’t let him be vague about such a crucial issue. What if his family’s business is just a shell? What will you do after you get married into their family?"
"That definitely won’t be the case. And it’s not his fault; he did share with me, I just didn’t remember," Ye Man quickly waved her hand, her face pained as she really didn’t want to continue this topic. She turned to Li Qing and said, "Sister Li, I still haven’t finished the tasks Sister Zeng assigned to me."
"Chatting won’t delay your work, and these things aren’t urgent anyway, they’re just for you to practice," Li Qing said as she glanced at the stuff on Ye Man’s desk, her enthusiasm flaring up as she pulled Ye Man over to give her some advice, "I’ve been through it all myself, let me teach you. You’ve got to watch out for men; there are hardly any who are truly honest, and few appreciate what they have. That’s why so many people feel that men change so much after getting married.
You have to wise up yourself. Especially when you first join your husband’s family, you can’t be too soft. It’s better to be seen as someone not to be messed with than to be easily subdued by your in-laws. Otherwise, you’ll have tough days ahead."
"Sister Li, I, he, they’ve all been very nice to me, it’s really not like that..." Ye Man suddenly felt awkward, and nervously glanced at the door of the office next to Xia Na’s, quickly interrupting Li Qing from continuing.
Although what Li Qing said wasn’t entirely without reason, if Ye Man allowed her to keep speaking so indiscriminately and Xia Na happened to hear it, it would be strange if Xia Na felt comfortable about it.
Even for Li Qing herself, once she later finds out the truth that Xia Na is her mother-in-law, she will probably hate herself to death in her heart.
"Don’t be too optimistic. You think they’re great now, but in two years, you’ll look back and realize how naive you were not to have just done whatever felt good from the start."
Li Qing couldn’t help but snicker at Ye Man’s nervous look; even Xia Na, who had suffered at the hands of her mother-in-law, would probably agree with what she was saying.
"Li Qing, please stop talking about it, we’re still at work." And do you have to say it so loudly? Are you afraid people won’t hear you?
Ye Man was somewhat at a loss for words. She wasn’t one of those people who acted tough on the outside. She generally liked to consider others’ feelings, speak kindly, and help out where she could. She was nothing like some people who used whatever little power they had to make things difficult for others on purpose.
Because of this, people could easily get the wrong impression that she was weak and easy to bully, but in her heart, she was clear about gratitude and grievances. If someone showed malice towards her, she wouldn’t seek revenge; at most, she’d just distance herself from that person.
She had thought Li Qing to be decent, someone who wouldn’t bully the "newbie," but now it seemed she was unreliable. She hadn’t even gotten married yet and Li Qing was already encouraging her to confront her in-laws. Was she well-meaning or did she have ulterior motives?
Ye Man always believed that all relationships were cultivated with effort.
Indeed, there were in-laws like those Li Qing spoke of, and not in small numbers. Against such in-laws, it’s true that a woman should not hesitate to fight back once she’s hurt and sees the truth.
But there are also many good in-laws in the world. One can’t just write people off with a broad stroke. At the beginning, when you haven’t seen the full picture or lived with them, when they haven’t actually done anything, you can’t just look at them with prejudiced glasses and treat them like "villains" right?
Putting oneself in another’s shoes, even if she had siblings, she wouldn’t like such sisters-in-law or daughters-in-law either.
"Fail to heed the old and suffer right before your eyes. Young people should be open-minded enough to take advice. If you don’t learn, sooner or later you’ll suffer a big loss," Li Qing said, noticing that Ye Man seemed completely unresponsive to her advice, and felt that her goodwill was being injured. Her gaze towards Ye Man changed.
"...Li Qing, I really can’t manage all that right now."
Ye Man broke out into a cold sweat, feeling almost powerless to retort and could only give a sheepish smile, bowing her head and pretending to be too busy to care.
"What’s wrong with you? Humph, good intentions taken for granted," Li Qing spat out.
Ye Man forced a wry smile, suddenly worried. Li Qing was also one of Xia Na’s secretaries, and when Zeng Jingya, who was currently showing her the ropes, left, it would be just Ye Man and Li Qing in this small office.
Li Qing now seemed not as easy-going as she had initially thought, but rather authoritative and fond of using her seniority to make others follow her lead. And Ye Man knew herself; although appearing weak, she very much had her own mind. If somebody was right, she would listen humbly. But if they were wrong, she definitely wouldn’t be led by the nose.
Would they be able to coexist peacefully then?
Ye Man’s head began to ache at the thought, and then she wondered, perhaps if Li Qing found out that she was actually going to be the daughter-in-law of the Gu family, would her attitude change once again?
