Chapter 137: Chapter 134: Meeting Gift
"Yes!" Leng Mochen nodded his head. "How has your health been lately?"
"Same as ever. You’ve been gone for ten months; your mother misses you a lot. This time, don’t leave again! Now that you have a girlfriend, get along well, aim to settle down early, and let me hold a great-grandchild soon. That would fulfill this old man’s wish!"
Speaking of that, Mr. Leng Sr. felt frustrated. His two sons got married and had children right when they were of age, and both had sons and daughters. However, when it came to his grandsons, they were outstanding in both looks and talent—real gems—but their marriages seem to have hit a wall.
The eldest grandson is over 30 and still unmarried, always claiming he’s busy with work! Thankfully, the second grandson hasn’t followed in his footsteps; at least he brought home a girlfriend.
Upon hearing his words, Li Si’s face flushed bright red. She stole a glance at Leng Mochen—this man, so proper and upright, really was attractive. But why did every member of the Leng Family talk about having grandsons? What if they had daughters instead?
"Dad, this time Mochen isn’t going anywhere! Mr. Yan Sr.’s daughter-in-law has taken Li Si as her goddaughter. From now on, you can look forward to holding a great-grandchild!" Mrs. Leng interjected, her mind racing. With the two of them together, it might not be long before she became a grandmother herself.
Mr. Leng Sr. lightly nodded in approval. "Very good! Young lady, come visit me whenever you have some free time!" With that, he pulled a small, circular piece of vibrant jade from his right pocket. "This is just a little thing. I’ll give it to you as a meeting gift from Grandpa."
Under Leng Mochen’s nodding signal, Li Si accepted the gift, feeling both surprised and flattered. She hadn’t expected the old man to give her a present upon meeting her. The jade was intricately carved with floral patterns, no larger than her thumb, cool and smooth to the touch—it must be a rare treasure.
Thankfully, she’d done her homework on his preferences beforehand. Li Si retrieved a blood-red chicken-blood stone wrapped in soft cloth from her bag. "This is for you. I hope you’ll like it?"
Mr. Leng Sr.’s eyes lit up as he accepted the stone with delight. Casting a glance at Leng Mochen, he thought to himself, "This gift reflects thoughtful preparation—surely arranged by my grandson!" It pleased him that she had considered his hobbies. Besides fishing and gardening, collecting different kinds of seals was his passion.
"Good! Excellent! This material would make a fine seal!" The more he looked at the stone, the more satisfied he became, turning it over in his hand. While not a rare artifact, it was flawless, free of cracks, and remarkably rich in blood-red patterns, forming clotted clusters—a true masterpiece.
Li Si secretly exhaled in relief. If not for Leng Mochen’s guidance, she would have been at a loss for what to give. This piece of chicken-blood stone was sent from North City by Long Wu under his command and soaked in special water for a few days. Afterward, its quality noticeably improved, with reduced impurities and a glossy, wax-like sheen.
It seemed the river water’s unique properties remained unaffected, apart from the land being unfit for farming!
After fiddling with the stone for a while, Mr. Leng Sr. raised his head and asked, "When is Qiankai returning to the country?"
"He said it’ll take another week! Dad, why isn’t Eldest Brother’s family here yet?" Mrs. Leng looked at the clock—already past five in the afternoon. The eldest son’s family truly acted like esteemed guests, arriving so late.
Mr. Leng Sr.’s expression darkened slightly. "Housekeeper Chen, call them!" A middle-aged man promptly bowed and left.
Just then, the entrance bustled as four people walked in. A middle-aged woman in a floral dress greeted with a laugh, "Dad, here we are! Sorry for the delay—Qianhan had some work that held us up."
Li Si looked up and saw a man leading the group, exuding an authoritative presence in a navy blue suit and white shirt. He must be Leng Mochen’s uncle.
Behind him were a strikingly handsome young man with a warm smile and a frosty-looking young woman with an air of detachment.
"Well now, this is Mochen’s girlfriend. It’s her first time visiting, and you’re late?" Mr. Leng Sr. struck his cane heavily against the floor, producing a distinct "thud, thud" sound.
"Dad, please don’t get upset! Knowing Mochen was bringing his girlfriend over, we went home to change into proper clothes—out of respect, of course!" The middle-aged woman said with exaggerated expressions, scanning Li Si up and down with a theatrical flair.
"Ah, so this is Mochen’s new girlfriend! She’s gorgeous, like a blossoming flower! Look at her—Sister-in-law, your family is really blessed!" This was Zeng Qiuping, Mrs. Leng’s sister-in-law, who never hesitated to compete with her.
"Indeed! I feel fortunate too—perhaps we’ll have a grandchild next year, and I’ll be a grandmother! Sister-in-law, when will Mohao bring his girlfriend around? We’d love to share in your joy!" Mrs. Leng didn’t miss the chance to bring this up.
Zeng Qiuping’s eyes flashed with anger but she quickly composed herself, saying, "Oh, you know how it is; Mohao is so career-focused—always busy! Perhaps one of these days he’ll surprise us. Well then, chatting away like this, we shouldn’t ignore the others. I haven’t introduced myself yet. Young lady, I’m Mochen’s aunt, and this is his uncle. Beside us are his elder cousin, Leng Mohao, and his younger cousin, Leng Mo."
Li Si greeted each of them politely, her impression forming. The uncle’s eyes held depth, likely a sign of leadership; Leng Mohao’s gaze carried an intimidating edge, hinting at a lack of integrity; Leng Mo was aloof and impenetrable. As for Zeng Qiuping, she immediately reminded Li Si of Zhang Meihua—similar temperaments!
The servants laid out the dishes, and the group took their seats. As Leng Mochen had mentioned before, the Leng Family had a rule of silence at the dining table, so Li Si quietly focused on her meal.
After dinner, Mr. Leng Sr. spoke. "Li Si, make yourself comfortable! Qianhan, Mohao, Mochen, come upstairs with me!" His current approach to health included skipping meals in the afternoon, so tonight was an exception for Li Si’s sake.
Li Si quickly rose from the sofa, smiling and nodding politely until the men disappeared upstairs. Only then did she sit back down.
Once Mr. Leng Sr. and the male relatives left, the atmosphere in the living room shifted immediately.
Previously quiet, Zeng Qiuping couldn’t hold back. "Your name is Li Si, right? Where are you from? What do your parents do for a living?"
Li Si answered warmly, "I’m from North City. My parents have passed away."
Zeng Qiuping’s enthusiasm waned noticeably, replying half-heartedly, "Oh! That’s nice! A simple family background. Sister-in-law, have you heard about Ye Cheng’s upcoming engagement party? Are you planning to attend?"
"Of course, I’ll go! Ye Cheng and Qiankai have a certain rapport!" Mrs. Leng noticed Li Si’s unease and decided it was time to usher the younger generation out for some breathing room.
She addressed Leng Ning, "Xiao Ning, why don’t you take Li Si out for a stroll? Xiao Mo can go too! You youngsters will find things to talk about!"
Leng Mo got up. "I have matters at the hospital; I’ll leave first." She politely nodded to the group before stepping out.
Zeng Qiuping’s gaze betrayed a touch of helplessness. Leng Mo had become like this ever since breaking up with her partner years ago—aloof and detached from everyone. She regretted giving her such an "icy" name.
