Chapter 229: I Will Grow Old And Die
Chapter 229: I Will Grow Old And Die
Iris can’t tell him what happened to Justin entirely because Eric is still unaware of other created existences in this world.
"Is he okay now? Can I go to visit him?"
She was stunned hearing his words. She still couldn’t allow Eric to come to their place because the area was restricted, and Xavier could only grant access to certain people.
Several times, she had planned to ask Xavier for permission for Eric, but she forgot, especially after Justin’s accident. Her focus was divided between Justin and her duty as GH.
In the last few months, her goal was to earn rewards to become strong and hunt down the dark witch who had attacked Justin.
’Sorry, brother Eric, I can’t keep my promise to you...’ She could only vent her anger inwardly.
After a few moments of thinking, she finally decided to visit him on the island.
"Brother Eric, you don’t need to leave the island. I’ll be visiting you in a few days. I will go there with Justin..."
Iris feels excited. Imagine how happy Justin must be to travel outside.
"Did you say he’s sick? Why do you want to travel with him here?" Eric asked worriedly.
A silence hangs in the air as Iris finds herself unable to disclose what truly happened to Justin.
"Well, Justin’s condition is a little bit weird. It’s hard for me to explain. You can see his condition when we arrive..." She said softly. "Brother, I’ll call you before we head there. Hopefully, I can go a few days ahead."
"Alright, no need to rush. Just ensure Justin will be alright to travel with you."
"Sure."
When Iris ended the call, she saw Xavier opening the door. "Who were you talking to?" he asked.
"Eric." She placed her phone on the table and walked over to him. "I plan to visit him the day after tomorrow. I hope you don’t mind?"
"Iris..." He embraced her. "You can go there whenever you want; no need to wait for my permission..."
"Hmm, thank you, Xavier," She smiled.
"But I can only join you in the evening." Xavier felt sorry for his wife because he had been so busy tracing the Demon King’s whereabouts and his army, leaving him with little time to accompany her.
Unfortunately, his search for the Demon King and his troops yielded no results; they seemed to have vanished from this lower realm. This stressed him out.
"Xavier... don’t worry. I won’t stay overnight because I’m taking Justin to the island. It would be a hassle if we stayed there for one night."
Iris intentionally brought Justin there because Emerald Island was the last place he visited before losing his memory. She hopes the good memories on the island can help trigger his lost memories.
...
Xavier was surprised to learn she wouldn’t stay on the island. He had assumed she’d wait and stay at least a week, especially since she hadn’t visited Eric since Justin’s incident.
"Are you sure? Well, I don’t mind spending the night there..." He said, meeting her gaze.
Iris shook her head. "Yes, I’m sure. Remember, Justin still behaves like a four-year-old, right? I can’t manage him at night..." She explained. Usually, a maid and Silvana assist Justin when he sleeps at night.
"I’ll ask Niles and Gavriel to accompany you to the island. Don’t worry about it. They’ll take care of Justin," Xavier said, smiling as he noticed the light in her eyes brighten. He leaned closer and gently kissed her lips.
After their short kiss, Iris hid the redness on her face by burying it in his embrace. Her arms wrapped tightly around his waist, seeking to calm her trembling heart.
Despite the months they’d spent together, she marveled at how even a simple kiss could still make her heart beat irregularly, just as it did now.
"Can you hear how loud my heartbeat is?" Iris asked curiously.
Xavier rested his chin on her head, tightening his embrace. A smile graced his lips at her question.
"I did. Your heartbeat sounds so beautiful. No music can rival it... that’s why I want to spend not just my entire day but my entire life with you, Ms. Darkwood!"
Her expression slowly changed from an adorable smile to utter surprise, then to a worried and sad attitude, thinking about the possibility that she would never be with him forever because she was only human, while Xavier was immortal.
The thought of her face aging while Xavier’s remained unchanged cast a shadow over her expression. Silently, she sighed deeply, trying to suppress the sudden pain in her heart.
Iris had heard from Gavriel that she could attain immortality by fulfilling her duties as a God Helper. However, she harbored doubts because Lucian, her boss, had never mentioned it. His consistent avoidance of her frustrated her deeply.
She slowly looked up to meet his gaze. "Xavier—" Their eyes locked, prompting her to continue, "I’m just a human from this place. In the end... I’ll grow old and die. But you!? You’ll remain the same: handsome, youthful, and immortal. I wish... you could turn me—" Her voice trailed off as she nearly choked on her own words, seeing his eyes gloomy.
Iris knew Xavier hated it when she asked him to turn her into a vampire. But did she have a choice? If she wanted to be with him forever, becoming immortal like him was the only solution; she needed to become a vampire.
"Iris, I’ve mentioned before. You don’t have to change yourself to become immortal. There’s another way..." He smiled as her eyes widened. "Alright, let’s sit down first. I might get taller if I stand here too long..." He said jokingly while guiding her to the sofa.
Xavier gently touched his wife’s cheek and remarked, "Seems like my wife can’t wait to consume our wedding night!?"
Iris, "..."
"Please, be patient, alright!?" Looking into her beautiful, deep blue eyes, Xavier continued, "My darling wife, I’ve found a solution for us to stay together forever..."
