Chapter 480: Chapter 468 Adoption Turmoil (1) Chapter 480: Chapter 468 Adoption Turmoil (1) Lu Yun settled down with Peng Xiangye after being threatened and chased back to their hometown by Second Sister-in-law Lu. Peng Xiangye stayed to work at the noodle shop, while Lu Yun, with the help of Lu Jiajie, got a job at a private factory. Unexpectedly, not two months after he started working there, he began seeing a girl named Hong Mei from the factory, and Peng Xiangye caught them together during a date.
Peng Xiangye scratched Lu Yun’s face to shreds; however, Lu Yun wasn’t polite either, and he beat her up, leaving her body covered in bruises and even knocking out two of her teeth.
Back on Radiance Road, when Peng Xiangye saw Lu Jiazong and Second Sister-in-law Lu, she sat on the ground and cried, “That damned man is finding women outside and even beat me up, I might as well be dead.”
The incident caused quite an uproar, and Lu Shan and Da Mai found out about it very quickly. However, they felt that whether Lu Yun divorced or not didn’t concern them, only to realize they had underestimated the situation.
That afternoon, Lu Shan received a call from Lu Jiazong, asking them to come to dinner on Radiance Road that evening and to make sure they brought Da Mai along.
Da Mai asked in confusion, “Why are they asking us to come over?”
“Maybe it’s about Lu Yun’s divorce,”
Da Mai thought it was unlikely: “Xiangye would never agree to a divorce. She wouldn’t get much money from it, and if she remarried, she wouldn’t find anyone better; her days wouldn’t be as comfortable as they are now.”
Even though working at the noodle shop was hard, she could take home sixty yuan a month, and after her in-laws were gone, she would inherit half of the shop. Peng Xiangye was too shrewd to agree to a divorce.
Lu Shan thought it was simple and said, “They’ve been married for so many years and have never had kids. Ah Yun has wanted a divorce for a long time, but Dad and Mom have been pressuring him not to. But Ah Yun wants to be a father, and sooner or later they have to face that fact.”
Da Mai felt that if Peng Xiangye agreed to a divorce, there was no need for them to go there. It had already been agreed that the family’s assets wouldn’t be given to them, so even if Peng Xiangye received a lot of compensation in the divorce, it wouldn’t hurt.
To Da Mai’s surprise, the reason they were asked to come over was to have Gou Sheng adopted by Lu Yun and Peng Xiangye.
Da Mai nearly exploded: “Dad, I don’t agree.”
Lu Jiazong didn’t care about her opinion and turned to Lu Shan, saying, “Shanzi, Ah Yun said if you’re willing to let Gou Sheng be adopted by him, he won’t get a divorce.”
Lu Shan was filial, but not foolishly so, and he flatly refused: “Dad, if Ah Yun physically couldn’t have kids and wanted to adopt Gou Sheng, I would consider it. With the current situation, how can I dare to give Gou Sheng up for adoption to them?”
“What do you mean you ‘dare not’? Are you afraid they won’t treat Gou Sheng well? With your mom and me watching, they’ll definitely treat Gou Sheng well.”
Lu Shan asked, “Ah Yun and my sister-in-law have no physical problems; the doctor said it’s just not their fate yet. What will happen to Gou Sheng if she gets pregnant after the adoption?”
Lu Jiazong was momentarily at a loss for words, but then he quickly said, “If your sister-in-law gets pregnant, you guys can just take Gou Sheng back.”
Lu Shan was nearly beside himself with anger. Frowning, he said, “If my younger brother wants him, I have to give him up, and if he doesn’t, I take him back? Dad, Gou Sheng is my son, not some stray cat or dog.”
Seeing Lu Jiazong about to speak again, Lu Shan interrupted, “Dad, there’s no way I can agree to this. If Ah Yun and my sister-in-law really want to raise a child, then they should adopt one from an orphanage.”
Lu Jiazong, somewhat irritated, said, “If Ah Yun were willing to adopt, would I still be here discussing this with you?”
Lu Shan knew the argument was pointless and didn’t want to continue, snorting coldly, “Gou Sheng is not going to be adopted by them. Ah Yun and Peng Xiangye are too lazy, they wouldn’t take care of the child, and in the end, you and Mom would still have to.”
“Have you made up your mind?”
With a firm attitude, Lu Shan said, “If there’s a difficulty, I’ll definitely help, but a child isn’t an object; I brought him into this world and I have to be responsible for him.”
Da Mai had been worried that her husband would give in and had thought that even if it meant offending her in-laws, she would never agree to such a preposterous idea. She was surprised and relieved to find her husband so resolute.
It was at this moment that Peng Xiangye ran out and knelt in front of the couple, pleading, “Big brother, sister-in-law, please pity me and adopt Gou Sheng to me!”
Da Mai held back Lu Shan from speaking and then asked, “If we adopt Gou Sheng over to you, what if you get pregnant? What happens to Gou Sheng then? Will you give him back to us?”
Peng Xiangye hastily assured that she wouldn’t.
Da Mai said with disgust, “Pretty words are easy to say. Xiangye, I’ve been sisters-in-law with you for six years. I know your true nature very well. No matter how flowery your words are, I’ll never believe them. If you had your own child, my Gou Sheng would be less than grass in your eyes.”
“No, I would definitely treat him as my own son.”
Da Mai replied disdainfully, “My child whom I bore for ten months, he’ll be dearly loved by Shanzi and me. We don’t need you to treat him like your own son.”
Having said that, she turned to Lu Jiazong and said, “Father, Shanzi and I are now earning as much as you and mother, able to provide Gou Sheng a good life and education. If we adopt him out to second brother and Xiangye, the child will have to rely on you and mother to support him, and he can only return to the old home for schooling. Father, you may not feel sorry for the child, but Gou Sheng is flesh of my flesh; I can’t bear to give him away.”
At this moment, Da Mai was especially grateful that her husband had been adopted into another family branch. With the noodle shop, they now earned a fair sum. Otherwise, if they depended on the family for everything, even with their disagreement, they would have no choice but to agree under father’s coercion.
Lu Jiazong was left speechless by the rebuke.
Seeing the adoption falling through, Peng Xiangye became desperate, crying out, “Big brother, sister-in-law, if you don’t agree to adopt Gou Sheng, Ah Yun is going to divorce me. If we get divorced, I’ll have nothing left but to die.”
Lu Shan hesitated somewhat.
Da Mai, however, was unmoved. Not to mention that she did not believe Peng Xiangye would actually kill herself, even if she did, what did it have to do with her family? Gou Sheng was a person, not some stray cat or dog to be taken on a whim and discarded as easily.
She took Lu Shan’s arm and said, “Child’s father, let’s go home.”
Knowing he was in the wrong, Lu Jiazong did not go after them.
As they walked down Radiance Road, Da Mai said to Lu Shan, “Even if she really does seek death, that’s no concern of ours; it’s Lu Yun’s own doing.”
Lu Shan’s expression grew serious, “But if she truly dies, how would we explain it to the Peng Family?”
Da Mai knew he was concerned about their father and mother’s feelings. She could compromise on other matters, but when it came to her child, she was firm, “That’s for father and mother to explain, it has nothing to do with us.”
“Shanzi, if they need money, we can lend it to them. But a child is not an object, it’s not something they can have just because they want it.”
Lu Shan nodded and said, “Don’t worry, I definitely won’t agree to this.”
Usually, household matters were handled by the mother-in-law, but she did not show up today. Da Mai felt that perhaps the mother-in-law also disagreed with the adoption, but could not argue against the father-in-law. Thinking this made Da Mai very sad.
Seeing Da Mai still distressed, Lu Shan comforted her, “Don’t worry, we are now part of the third family branch. To go through with the adoption, grandfather and aunt must agree too. As long as they don’t agree, there’s nothing my father can do even if he pressures us.”
At his words, Da Mai felt somewhat relieved.
