Rearing Demons -
Chapter 52: Chaotic Battle
Chapter 52: Chaotic Battle
Jisvruul and Velmira hid behind a large, fleshy boulder, watching as massive demons corralled a group of humans like cattle.
Gra gra (What is going on?)
Seeing the sheer number of Gralith and Kyrrath demons, Jisvruul was momentarily shocked.
Those demons are from the Gravesong Wastes, Velmira said, though she didn’t fully answer his question. Seems like the Prince is really trying to find your Master.
Gra! (Our!)
Yes, yes, our Master. She rolled her eyes slightly.
Gra gra! (I’ll go kill them!)
No!
Just as he was about to lunge forward, she grabbed his arm and yanked him back behind the boulder.
Gra! (What?)
He glared at her, irritation flashing in his eyes.
Are you an idiot? She narrowed her gaze. There are two Kyrraths over there. And I’m sure this isn’t the only group that was sent out.
Graa! (I’m not scared!)
No one said you were.
From her time with Jisvruul, Velmira had learned that his way of thinking was simple—almost childlike.
All he cared about was proving himself worthy in Yur’s eyes. Nothing more, nothing less. There was an obsession in him—an unwavering need to be useful.
Look, let’s wait for them to leave, then we’ll move out of this region.
Gra Graa! (We have to find Ris!)
We will, but we also have to stay alive. Right now, I’m not at full strength, so I’ll be useless in a fight.
Gra! (You’re useless even now!)
Her eye twitched, but she didn’t respond.
Jisvruul was stubborn—annoying even—but only when it came to anyone other than his Master.
Wait a second...
Her eyes locked onto one of the humans in the group.
A girl.
A girl she recognized.
That’s Ris!
Gra! (Let’s go get her!)
Without warning, Jisvruul shot out from behind the boulder.
Despite Velmira’s warning just seconds ago, the moment he heard the target was there, he moved.
This idiot!
Even as she cursed inwardly, she immediately flew after him.
In total, there were two Kyrraths and twelve Gralith. The humans had three Luminous Heart cultivators and a dozen or so Shining Core cultivators.
Let me try something.
Velmira altered her course, heading in the direction where she sensed more humans.
————————————————————————
"Damn it!" Ris frowned as she and her group were surrounded by demons.
"Miss Ris, what do we do?"
Beside her stood two Luminous Heart cultivators. They had only recently broken through, meaning they could barely hold off one Gralith each—at most.
She, on the other hand, could handle multiple Gralith or, at best, distract a single Kyrrath. Killing one was out of the question.
Even if she transformed into her demon form, she wouldn’t stand a chance against all of them.
She was not Celis.
Biting her lip, she struggled to come up with a plan.
Should I sacrifice these disciples and escape?
She still had the Demon Transformation pill.
If she used the disciples as bait, there was a good chance she could take the pill and slip away, becoming undetectable for a period of time.
Of course, that meant she wouldn’t be able to return anywhere near this region.
Normally, that wouldn’t be a problem. She could simply head toward Barren Canyon—her real destination, despite all the detours. The issue was her oath to Yur.
But just as she was deep in thought, a deafening growl erupted.
"ARRAAAA!"
The sound was so powerful that even she felt slightly dazed.
The Shining Core cultivators collapsed instantly, their eyes and ears bleeding.
Even the two weaker Luminous Heart cultivators staggered.
Jisvruul! Capture as many of the Gralith as you can!
A command entered Jisvruul’s mind just as he flew in, his full demon form unleashed.
Yes, Master!
His determination surged.
With a mighty crash, he landed among the demons. But even with his massive size, he was up against two Kyrrath, several Mawstriders, and the dreaded Husked Lords.
It was a battle he could not win.
Not that it mattered to Jisvruul. Yur wanted this. That was enough.
Like Yur, Jisvruul was too young—too reckless—to truly understand danger.
Staring into the despondent sky, he unleashed another shriek.
The countless eyes on his throat trembled and danced.
The Shining Core disciples—what remained of them—collapsed entirely.
Jisvruul didn’t care.
His focus was on the Gralith that had frozen from his scream.
He lunged.
His massive claws ripped through flesh, tearing chunks from their bodies.
One of the Husked Lords—unaffected by the shriek—extended a decayed arm and grabbed Jisvruul’s wings.
"ARRRAAA!"
With a sickening crack, his wing was torn from his back.
Another shriek erupted, shaking the battlefield.
"What the hell is that?!"
The two Luminous Heart disciples wobbled, struggling to stay upright as the third shriek rattled through their bones.
Ris didn’t answer. Her attention remained locked on the unmoving Kyrrath.
"ARAAAA!"
Another tortured shriek tore from Jisvruul as the Husked Lord ripped off his second wing.
However, in the same moment, Jisvruul lunged forward, swallowing a Mawstrider whole.
He then whipped around, his gaze locking onto the Husked Lord.
If it were a regular Kyrrath, he might have had a chance. But a demi-Valgath was beyond his ability to handle.
Jisvruul, escape!
Yur’s command rang in his mind.
Zul had just warned Yur of the worsening situation, and Yur had no intention of dying in such a pathetic manner.
He had only collected half of what he needed.
Where is Velmira? Yur asked Zul.
[Unable to locate!]
Did she run away? Yur wondered.
Though he wanted to figure out what had happened to her, there was no time for distractions.
Inside his stomach, the Mawstrider thrashed violently. It was slightly weaker than the demon Brune, but sealing it into the Blood Sigil required his full concentration.
On the outside, Jisvruul rammed his mangled, bleeding body into two Gralith at once.
Just as he opened his massive maw to swallow one—
Not yet!
Yur’s voice cut through his mind.
I can’t seal two Gralith at the same time if they’re this strong!
Jisvruul immediately stopped himself.
Instead of swallowing, he used his powerful jaws to bite clean through the Mawstrider’s head, blood spraying in every direction.
"Both of you—attack those Gralith in the corner!"
Ris saw her opportunity and commanded the two Luminous Heart cultivators to engage.
With them aiding this new demon, she had a better chance of slipping away unnoticed.
Of course, she still had to be careful.
The silent Husked Lord had yet to make a move.
It didn’t need to—the first Husked Lord was tearing Jisvruul apart already.
This is my chance. She needed to run. Saving the disciples had never been part of her plan.
Jisvruul was distracting the Gralith demons and even one of the Husked Lords.
"ARAAAAA!"
Jisvruul finally understood how bad this situation was. Yes, he had managed to kill a Gralith and swallow two for Yur.
But the cost...
One of his arms was missing.
Mawstriders climbed over his body, sinking their fangs into his flesh.
For the first time, panic filled him.
But not for himself. For Yur. Jisvruul could not fail his master.
"ARRAAAA!" Another desperate shriek.
A Mawstrider lunged, sinking its teeth into his neck, devouring the countless eyes that lined his throat.
GRAAAA! (VELMIRA! WHERE ARE YOU?!)
A ragged howl escaped him as his vision blurred.
Calm down. I’m here. A voice—smooth and unbothered.
From above, a breathtaking figure descended, walking through the air with graceful, dainty steps.
Her near-perfect form swayed effortlessly, as if the chaos below was beneath her notice.
Her lips and cheeks were stained red. She licked them clean.
"I should be able to hold off a few of these guys now," she mused, glancing at Jisvruul before shaking her head.
Idiot. I told you to wait.
Gra! (Hurry up and do something! Take Master!)
Relax. I’ll handle these Kyrrath.
Lifting her hand, an immense pressure crashed down.
The Gralith dropped to their knees in an instant.
The Husked Lords raised their heads, their throats growling.
Velmira smirked. "Come."
She mocked the Husked Lords.
