Chapter 239: 239: Preparation Report!
---
Kai paused, hand still on the side of the Alkaidon’s neck. He grinned faintly. "I was thinking about how we’ll get along. How can I take care of your gift? How much food I need to feed, that kind of stuff." He changed the topic. He can’t tell her that he was talking to his system.
"Don’t worry, Allaidon will hunt for itself. It will take care of the food." The voice replied.
In the mist, the crab did not retreat with offense. Instead, it stepped back slowly, claws lowering as if in formal salute. Its eyes met Kai’s once, then turned away, vanishing back into the deep as fog swallowed its bulk.
"I thank you," the voice said. "One day, when you return, it may still be here. If not... then you will have to earn a new arm for your upcoming challenges."
Kai nodded. "I’ll earn it. Or make it."
The mists pulsed again. The luminous woman began to fade, the glow softening to pale memory. Her voice returned, more distant this time, as though being drawn backward by the tide.
"Remember this, Kai. I do not ask for servitude. I ask only for survival. The chains feed on my strength. But if you live long enough... if you grow, if you rise... then the chain may be broken. And what lies beyond it/me may yet be free. The chain and your fate are bound by the world."
Kai opened his mouth, but no words came. The gravity of her last phrase settled over him like a weight of forgotten stars.
What lies beyond it. The very idea chilled him. Their fate is bound, what does it even mean?
But she was already vanishing, fog curling up like closing petals. Her outline shimmered once, and then all light was gone.
Only the Alkaidon remained.
It crooned once more, voice like low brass across an empty battlefield. Kai stepped back onto its back, his foot brushing one of the layered flight feathers. The texture was strange... it was soft like down but humming with dormant power. The beast tilted its wings and lifted them both without fanfare.
They were getting out of the mist. There was no storm. No transition. One heartbeat, they floated in the dark. The next, the world snapped back into clarity like a dream ending.
Uroth awaited beyond the mist, its colossal eyes watching from the depths like distant twin moons.
The Sable Alkaidon cried out— a sound that cracked the sky with noble pride and Uroth answered with a ripple that shattered the surface of the sea for kilometers in every direction.
Then the octopus turned, sliding into deeper waters. The sea was silent again. No fog. No chains. Just wind, stars, and salt.
Kai sat upright atop his new companion, eyes narrowed as the wind played against his hair. His mind reeled with all he had seen. Devouring chains, ancient vows, maybe celestial links, and the weight of a future not yet lived.
But behind that weight was one new truth. He was no longer the ant who had clawed his way through a pile of dead bodies to devour scraps.
He was no longer even a simple Monarch ruling one mountain. He had been invited into one of the biggest oldest secrets of the universe. And now, he has wings which will make his journey faster to the Eastern forest.
(A few hours ago... Southern Forest Tunnel – Time: Evening)
Deep within the sprawling roots of the Southern Forest, the last surviving hall of the carpenter ant clan pulsed with quiet urgency. The scent of moss and pine lingered in the tunnels, brushed by cool drafts and faint spores drifting down like lazy snow.
The tunnel hive was alive with motion. Ants marched in formation. Slings of woven root bark were stacked into traveling carts. Leaf plates of preserved nectar glue rations were packed into resin bundles. The carpenter ants were not preparing for war.
They were preparing to move. After the day’s work.
In the center of the hive’s deepest chamber, the stone forged meeting room flickered with soft glow moss light. Bioluminescent vines pulsed faintly from above, casting blue green reflections on the obsidian walls.
Akayoroi, Queen of the Southern carpenter Ants Tunnels, stood at the center. Her upper body was elegant as always—pale lavender skin, obsidian armour curling across her shoulders like vines. Her lower body, the ant half of her, shimmered with deep red chitin, polished and strong despite the last night battles (Kai’s anaconda) she’d endured. Though she stood tall, a faint weariness tugged at the edge of her mouth.
Around her stood the last of her guard, three loyal battle sisters, all armored, all proud.
Sha. Vel. Naaro.
And four more wounded but recovering, stood at attention behind them, leaning lightly on support staff, but standing nonetheless. Near them were the other two sisters Xxx and Xxx.
"We’ve gathered everything for the journey," Sha began. Her antennae twitched sharply. "The food, resin packs, fungal sap for healing. Two reinforced carts will be ready by tomorrow morning."
Vel tapped the haft of her dagger into the stone floor. "The egg (akayoroi mothers) cradles are almost complete. We’ll transfer the royal clutch from the frozen hatching vault. The queen’s line will travel in silence and heat."
"The path to Eastern forest Monarch Mountain is long," Naaro added, "but we’ll survive it. We have something to live for now."
Akayoroi nodded. "You’ve done well."
She turned to face the back of the room, where a preserved map of the forest and tunnels was etched into the wall. Her voice dropped an octave.
"The eggs... they are all that remains of the last queen before me. If we deliver them safely to Kai’s mountain, then our line continues. If not..." she paused. "All our hope will vanish."
A silence fell. It wasn’t grim, it was real tension. Then Akayoroi turned, her antennae lightly twitching.
"We’ll discuss the protection route tomorrow. For now, rest. But..." her eyes narrowed. "Has Kai returned?"
