Chapter 86: Get To Know The Team
The room fell silent as Lara cleared her throat. Arthur leaned forward, his curiosity piqued.
Lara went on to tell them everything they needed to know about her and her group’s abilities, skills, weaknesses, and so on.
"I’ve been a chosen for three years," she began, her voice steady and clear. "My core is practically filled, so my physical strength is high."
Her eyes took on a softer quality as she continued. "My ability, sadly, is limited to healing, but..." She paused, summoning two identical swords from thin air. The blades gleamed in the dim light, strange runes etched along their length pulsing with a soft, blue glow. "I have these twin swords that have an extremely unique ability."
She held the blades before her, one in each hand, their perfectly balanced forms catching the light. "Every time I inflict damage on someone with my blades, they will heal an equal amount of damage to what I caused to my opponent on myself." She took a second letting us understand her words "So if I had a huge gash on my leg and landed an attack of equal or more damage, that gash would be healed."
Arthur and Aziel exchanged glances, amazed by her having such a powerful soul weapon. Most chosen were lucky to have either a strong innate ability or a decent soul weapon—having both was rare indeed.
"And on top of that," she added with a hint of pride in her voice, "I’m rather skilled with the blades, so I definitely won’t be a hindrance in battle." She let her swords disappear.
Next was Jonas, he stepped forward, the floorboards creaking under his weight. His voice was deep and resonant as he explained his unique power.
"My ability makes it so I can make my body extremely heavy but move light as a feather," he rumbled, demonstrating by jumping several feet into the air despite his massive frame. When he landed, the entire room shook, dust falling from the ceiling. "It makes my attacks pack a serious punch. I can make my fist weigh a couple hundred pounds but swing it like it weighs nothing... scary, eh?" He grinned, his teeth startlingly white.
Jonas flexed his massive arms, the muscles rippling beneath his skin. "Although there is a limit," he admitted, running a hand through his thick hair. "I can’t just make myself infinitely heavy... yet." The last word hung in the air, a promise of potential untapped.
He suddenly summoned a massive shield, a towering piece of metal that looked too heavy for even two men to lift. "I also have a soul weapon," he continued, hefting the shield with surprising ease. "Its unique trait is the same as mine—it can become ridiculously heavy but stay light to me, making it quite the useful shield." He smiled again, a warrior’s pride evident in his expression. "And makes me quite the useful tank."
Arthur nodded appreciatively. In a world where danger lurked around every corner, someone who could take hits and keep standing was invaluable.
Next was Jake.
"My ability is pretty much a glorified soul weapon," he explained with a wry smile. He extended his arm, and a shimmer of energy began to form between his fingers. "I can create extremely powerful arrows of energy and use my hands like a bow to shoot it." As he spoke, the energy coalesced into a gleaming arrow, pulsing with power. With a fluid motion, he pulled back his other hand as if drawing a bowstring and released. The arrow shot across the room, embedding itself in the wall behind before dissolving into sparkles of light.
"Pretty handy," he added with a shrug, though his satisfied smile betrayed his casual tone.
Kay, the final member of Lara’s group.
"Kay’s ability is rather straightforward," Lara explained, as the man himself seemed disinclined to speak. "He’s strong, really strong, and fast. His ability is simply a physical enhancement past the normal one that all chosen receive." She glanced at Kay, who nodded once in confirmation.
"His hammer is not a soul weapon," she continued, gesturing to the massive war hammer laying next to him, "but it’s an enchanted war hammer, making it extremely effective in combat. It can channel his strength and amplify it tenfold."
After they each explained their abilities, it was Arthur and Aziel’s turn. The atmosphere in the room shifted slightly, an undercurrent of anticipation running through Lara’s group.
Aziel went first, stepping forward with his usual confidence. "I can use lightning," he stated, electricity dancing between his fingertips as if to emphasize his point. "It makes me faster and stronger, and if I touch something, I can transmit that lightning, shocking them like an overcharged taser." A small spark jumped from his hand to the nearby table, causing a tiny scorch mark.
"I also have this," he added with a flourish. He extended his arm, and in a flicker of sparks and lighting, a magnificent spear materialized in his grasp. The weapon crackled with energy, small arcs of lightning jumping along its length.
Lara’s group wasn’t too shocked by his display, having already been vaguely aware of what type of powers he had due to his persistent bragging during the tales of their time through the rose field. Still, seeing the lightning in action was different from hearing about it, and a few appreciative murmurs rippled through the group.
Next was Arthur’s turn. He hesitated, standing still for a moment as he remembered Aziel’s previous warning about people learning too much about his ability.
He turned to Aziel and gave him a wary look, seeking guidance. Aziel was already looking his way and gave him a brief nod, a silent permission to proceed—but carefully.
Arthur took a deep breath and went on to name his abilities, navigating cautiously around anything relating to corruption or the darker aspects of his power. The tension in his shoulders was visible as he spoke, choosing each word with deliberate care.
"I have several abilities," he began, his voice steady despite his nervousness. "First, I have realm storage—I can store items in a pocket dimension and retrieve them at will." He demonstrated by pulling out an empty jar that previously held water, then returning it to the invisible space.
He then went on to explain his dark sense to the best of his abilities, and members of their groups eyes grew wider.
"Third, my attributes—strength, speed, endurance—are all boosted when I’m in darkness." He flexed his hand.
"And finally," he continued, "I have this." With a fluid motion, he drew his odachi, the long blade gleaming with an almost unnatural luster.
He didn’t mention whatever had happened when his shadow had attacked that termite for him because he still didn’t really know what that was. Some abilities were better left unspoken until they were understood—especially ones that seemed to act independently of his will.
All of them were silently staring in shock at Arthur, making him nervous. ’Uh oh, did I say too much?’ he thought, gripping his odachi tighter.
"You have darkness abilities!?" Lara finally exclaimed, her voice pitched higher with astonishment. "I... I-I think that would make you the first... t-that’s unbelievable, that’s truly something special, Arthur." Her scholarly excitement was back, eyes wide with fascination.
’Everyone has the same reaction to finding out about my abilities,’ Arthur thought, letting his blade disappear. ’Is it really all that special?’.
They went on to ask him a couple more questions about his abilities before finally, they satiated their curiosity. Lara’s expression changed once more, the excitement fading as she adopted her leader persona again.
"Alright," she said, her tone getting stern once more. "Time for the final order of business..."
