Chapter 37: Kick Some Asses
Chapter 37: Kick Some Asses
Lunchtime was the only time Raven had the chance to be free from Larry Hopkins. The employment contract stated that as his personal assistant, she should at least have an hour of freedom at noon before office hours resume.
So when the clock struck at 12:PM, Raven appeared at Larry’s door. Larry was still busy with papers that needed his signature.
"It’s twelve PM, sir." She said, "I’m heading to lunch."
"Go knock yourself out," Larry replied, not even looking up.
"Okay," Raven said and headed out.
She now had one hour of freedom... one hour to kick some ass.
She headed down the corridor and took the elevator. Then she dialed Adam’s number.
He picked up almost immediately, "Yes?"
"Oh! Hey...I ... um..." Raven stuttered a bit, "You told me I should let you know if I want to kick some ass, right?"
"Yes... why?"
"Well, I have one hour of freedom and I’m on my way to kick some asses." She answered, "I need you."
There was a slight pause before Adam answered, "I’m on my way, where do I pick you up?"
"Stanford Street, fifteen minutes."
"Got it."
The elevator door opened, and Raven walked down the lobby, outside the street, and then to Stanford Street.
Being Larry’s secretary, he had handed her the responsibility of answering all his calls, whether office-related or not.
So she had the new mob leader’s number, courtesy of Larry. Using her other phone, she dialed the number and then waited.
The mob leader answered the call, "Who the fuck is this?"
"Hello, I heard you’ve been recruited to catch me."
"Oh... you. How did you get my number?" The mob leader asked.
"Well, like I told Larry, I’m everywhere and nowhere." She answered, "Why don’t we meet up, and make a deal?"
The man snickered, "Deal? You think because you beat up the members of Mob Gang and brought shame to their name, you could do the same to us? We’re different. I’m assuming you’ve never heard of us..."
"Stop yakking your hole and tell me your location." She barked, "Then we’ll find out how different you are from Mob Gang."
"Oh yeah?" The man was amused. "Meet us at Mauve Street."
"Good."
Just as the call ended, Adam, in his red convertible car pulled up in front of her.
"Let’s go kick some asses."
Raven entered the back of the car, "Can you turn on the power roof."
"Sure thing."
Adam turned on the power roof and then drove to the address Raven gave him. At the back of the car, Raven undressed and removed her Holly camouflage... the hair, the fake freckles, the prosthetic.
When they were within the areas of Mauve Street, Raven instructed Adam to park the car. He parked the car, and they got out and walked into the street.
Mauve Street wasn’t really a street; it was a small back alley filled with disposed rain barrels, rain pipes, etc.
"There’s no one here." Adam said, "Are you sure this is the right place?"
"I’m positive."
Just then, they began to appear. They were divided, half of them came from the other side of the street, while the other half came from the other side of the street, closing them in.
And Raven noticed that all of them were carrying weapons.
"Well, well." The leader said, "You’re even prettier in person."
"Aww! I love compliments, thank you."
"Too bad, it’s gonna get ruined." The man said, "Get them, boys."
The men charged.
"You take the right, I take the left," Raven said, her voice steady despite the storm of bodies rushing toward them.
"Got it," Adam replied, "Raven, please be careful." He said, staring deep into her eyes.
Come on Raven! This is not the time for this! She told herself.
"You worry too much Adam." Raven moved.
They split instantly. Adam darted right, weaving between the charging men, while Raven shot left, a blur of motion. The narrow alley was filled with the clatter of boots on wet concrete, the dull thud of rain barrels being kicked aside, and the sharp gleam of weapons—knives, pipes, chains. The mob wasn’t here to fight fair.
But neither were they.
Raven ducked under a swinging pipe, twisting her body to the side as the weapon whistled past her ear. She grabbed the attacker’s wrist and wrenched it hard, forcing him to drop the pipe. In the same motion, she spun, using his momentum against him, and slammed his own arm into his face. He crumpled.
Another came at her with a knife, slashing wildly. She sidestepped, grabbed a discarded rain barrel lid, and deflected the blade before smashing the lid into his face. Blood sprayed as he staggered back, and she followed up with a swift kick to his chest, sending him flying into two more men.
Meanwhile, Adam was a force of nature. One of the men lunged with a chain, aiming to wrap it around his throat. Adam caught the chain mid-air, yanked the man forward, and drove his knee into his gut. As the attacker gasped for air, Adam used the chain to whip another across the face, sending him spinning.
A baseball bat swung toward his ribs, but Adam grabbed a nearby rain barrel and flipped it up as a shield. The wood cracked against the metal with a loud clang. Before the wielder could recover, Adam spun, kicking the barrel straight into his chest, knocking him flat.
Raven flipped over a stack of barrels as three men rushed her. She landed, rolled, and sprang up with a brutal uppercut to one man’s jaw. As he reeled back, she grabbed another by the collar and used him as a human shield against a knife thrust. The blade sank into the man’s shoulder, and before the attacker could pull it free, Raven kicked him square in the chest, sending him crashing into the pile of barrels.
Adam, now surrounded by six men, grinned. "You guys sure about this?"
They hesitated, but then one rushed forward. Adam sidestepped, grabbed the man’s wrist, and used his own momentum to throw him over his shoulder. He landed hard, and before the others could react, Adam was already moving. He ducked under a swinging pipe, drove an elbow into one man’s ribs, and then grabbed another by the shirt, hurling him into the wall.
Raven, mid-air, twisted as she kicked off a rain barrel, launching herself into two men at once. Her fists cracked against their skulls, and she landed smoothly, sweeping another’s legs from under him. She grabbed a fallen chain and snapped it out like a whip, wrapping it around a man’s ankle and yanking hard. He fell backward, taking two others down with him.
Adam ripped a pipe from an attacker’s hands and spun it in his grip before cracking it across another’s head. Raven dodged a wild swing, vaulted over a fallen body, and drove her knee into another’s chest.
The alley was chaos—shouts, grunts, the sound of bodies hitting the ground. One by one, the mob fell, weapons clattering uselessly onto the wet pavement.
And when the last man groaned, barely conscious, Adam turned to Raven, breathing hard but grinning.
"Well," he said, "that was fun."
Raven smirked, cracking her knuckles. "Too easy."
Then she searched around the area for the mob leader, but he was nowhere to be found. Time was already running out.
"I gotta get back to work. Come on!"
