Race With a Heart -
Chapter 88: Sunny Antidote
Chapter 88: Sunny Antidote
No, it can’t be, Moore shook his head. Such cases only happen in cheap drama. But maybe ...
Paul Denning turned to the direction of a boy who found the body.
"Poor boy," he said with real sympathy in his voice. "He will remember this birthday for the rest of his life. He wanted to follow his father’s footsteps to become a doctor, but now ... "
The criminal pathologist signaled and the paramedics put the girl’s body on a stretcher and carried it to the ambulance.
"Lieutenant, maybe I will go and question witnesses?" Denning asked eagerly. The yang police officer was full of enthusiasm and passion, but most of all he knew his job.
"Okay," Sullivan agreed. "Oh! Wait! I have a question."
"Yes?" Denning, who had already turned to leave, stopped.
"Have you ever been injured on duty?"
"How do you know that?" his new partner was surprised. "Five weeks ago, during an arrest, a suspect stuck a knife into my thigh." Denning stroked his right thigh. "Everything has healed and the leg is one hundred percent functional, so don’t worry, I won’t slow you down, Lieutenant."
The young policeman left with a warm smile and, after summoning the policemen from the patrol, went to question witnesses.
"Professor, you are a genius!" Sullivan shook his head in admiration. "No wonder your professor sets you up as an example for new students. But now that his leg has healed, how did you know?"
"Small, subconscious gestures. He tries not to put any weight on that leg. He brushed his hand as if he felt something unpleasant. The body remembers the injury and warns him. There are many cases where an injured body will alert you to a change in weather. Medically, there is no reason for this if the wound has healed well. I wonder if it will rain tomorrow? "
"You’re joking right?"
"Maybe..."
For outsiders, joking at a crime scene, where the body of a murdered woman was lying just a moment earlier, may look like a profanation. Humans don’t usually deal with violent crimes, so they would naturally be outraged over hearing Sullivan and Moore’s conversation. It would be a completely natural, healthy response. But when you see crimes on a daily basis, when you deal with the worst members of the human species and their deeds on a daily basis, you must find a way not to go crazy. It is not that the policeman, the doctor or, in this case, the consultant who was joking at the crime scene, did not respect the victim. He was just looking for a way to relieve the tension he had so much more than the ordinary passerby who saw the corpse for the first time. This apparent insensitivity and frivolity was a defensive instinct so as not to go crazy with the crimes they were dealing with.
"Do you already know when the autopsy will be?" Moore asked Sullivan.
"Tomorrow morning. Do you want to take part in it? "
Moore imagined the girl’s several-day-long dead body lying on the cold table. He imagined a chill and a scent he didn’t want to get used to.
"I think I’ll this one," he announced. "You don’t need me anymore, do you?"
"Truth. I just wanted you to take a look at this place. "
"Fine. I would focus on someone who is violent, may have a history of violence, and has a strong resentment towards the victim. So far you haven’t found anything to suggest a series? "
"Thank goodness, no. Unless the autopsy shows something. "
"Fine. Then send me photos tomorrow. But even if this were the beginning of the series, it’s worth checking out her surroundings first. Serials also often start with someone they know. "
"Okay. See you soon!"
Fatal beating and asphyxiation were by no means uncommon. Usually these were crimes of passion, not premeditation. It was an argument that became too drastic. It was a suspicion of betrayal. The perpetrator usually wanted to punish or scare the victim, or just show who is on top, who is dominant. It was cheap and vulgar behavior more like primal male than civilized human, but looking at the statistics, Kevin couldn’t help but feel that humans were too easily carried away by these primal, aggressive instincts.
But stuffing the body behind the dumpster was a very different level of barbarism. In the eyes of the perpetrator, the murdered girl was not even human, she was garbage or even something even worse, because she had been pushed behind the garbage container.
Kevin shook his head. He went a long way in drawing conclusions. He has to see what position the body was in. This will tell him more clearly if the murderer panicked and tried to hide the body, or did he choose such a humiliating place on purpose? Then he would be better able to determine whether it was homicide or murder.
At this point, the professor felt a great urge to see Jack. Lambert has said more than once that being with Kevin charges his batteries with positive energy. Moore felt it exactly the same. Jack was such a warm, energetic man whose smile brought relief that all the ugly things Kevin saw at work just disappeared.
Moore sighed in resignation. Before leaving, they had their fill of themselves, recharged their batteries for a few days of separation, but none of them could have foreseen the finding of the body of a young girl who had been brutally murdered. It was at times like these that Kevin needed Jack most.
The professor felt a great need to call his lover, but Jack was currently on the plane. And even if he did land, he needed to focus on the race now, not on his boyfriend left at home, who was big enough to do on his own.
Their relationship has always been about giving and taking in a balanced way. Neither of them felt indebted to the other, so they were always equal. They were real partners. They supported each other in times of need, but also knew when they had to give the other person a moment of respite.
Kevin, however, felt a great need to recharge himself with someone cheerful and joyful. Someone whose mere presence will be as refreshing as a breeze of spring wind. Someone whose heart remained beautiful and clean despite the fact that the world was full of dirt and stench.
Moore didn’t know himself why a big smile appeared on his lips as he got into the car. Was it because the face of a young man he had recently met appeared in his mind? The face of the boy Jack treated like his little brother? Can Kevin call him?
Well, why not?
Martin was perhaps the happiest man in the world today. He would probably sing for joy now, if he weren’t as deaf.
The sun was already below the horizon, but he felt as if it were high in the sky and it was shining right in his face. Little did he realize that at this point he looked like the sun himself and that the most light radiated from him. He was so radiant that people looked at him in the streets.
Martin was in such a mood that perhaps even an atomic bomb would not spoil him. For there is nothing more wonderful in the world than knowing that the love you feel is mutual! And his love was just like that!
It was not easy for Martin to break through the resistance that was in Steve’s heart and most of all his mind. But it worked! It worked!!! Now they will both be on a straight path to happiness.
The young mechanic wanted to announce his happiness to the whole world. He wanted to sing and dance his happiness and walked down the street as vigorously as if he were about to start jumping joyfully. As happiness filled his heart, he began to seriously consider who to share it with?
Only three people (not counting him and Steve, of course) knew that these two men were dating intimately. The first and natural choice to announce his joy was Jack Lambert, but the driver flew out with Steve for the competition. So Jack was temporarily unavailable.
The second choice was Ami. Martin, however, felt some reluctance to contact his ex-girlfriend and tell her about his new relationship. Ami, of course, supported him a lot and supported him strongly, but which ex-girlfriend likes to hear about how well her ex-boyfriend is doing? If they ever meet, if Ami asks him herself, he will answer her without any secrets, completely honestly, but to call her alone to show off ... No, it was unfair to Ami alone.
The third person was Kevin Moore, Jack’s boyfriend. The professor was very nice, but whether it was because of the age difference (over ten years) or because the professor was a professor and Martin had barely graduated from high school, the boy did not dare to contact him. Kevin was just very intimidating to him.
Martin suddenly looked sad. He was so happy and he had no one to share his happiness with.
Yes, Martin had many very good colleagues whom he could call friends, but he hadn’t revealed to any of them yet that he was dating a man. Someday he will, but not yet.
Suddenly Martin felt hungry. He may have no one around to celebrate with, but he will celebrate! He will buy something delicious to eat. He had just changed direction and headed towards a nice place where he had been wanting to eat for a long time when his phone rang in his pocket.
"Oh!" he exclaimed in surprise, not paying attention that passersby could hear him "James Indiana Harry Moore!"
