Chapter 117: Stay Objective When Reality Hits Beliefs
"He was not. I don’t know if I can talk about it ... He had a little incident a few years ago, then there were only women and ... me. "
It somehow changed things. Paxton was older, more experienced, and in a higher position and had more money, but it looked like he was as green as Martin in matters of male relationships. As long as he hadn’t lied to Martin. But...
Dave automatically assumed that Steve, using his position, seduced and used the young and naive Martin. It matched the image of the playboy and bad boy Dave had seen on TV. But he didn’t really know anything about the driver, about his life and personality. He only knew what the media showed. Yet Dave wasn’t stupid, and he knew the media rarely showed the truth. So why did he judge and convict Paxton so quickly?
The boy looked at Martin and saw a really beautiful man, maybe even a little too beautiful for a man. His features were very pretty, gentle like a woman’s, and his eyes shone with a bright, serene glow. Martin also had a very warm, engaging smile and a gentle personality that made everyone feel comfortable around him. He was also a good man with a soft heart, but also brave and very talented. If a man, even subconsciously, liked other men, he would have to find Martin very attractive.
It is true that Dave did not even see him as an object of desire for a second (he even felt nauseous at the thought) but someone else could think of Martin that way, and it wouldn’t be weird.
Dave sighed silently. He dreamed of becoming a prosecutor. The profession of a prosecutor was not to blindly punish random people. The prosecutor had to gather evidence and hear the testimony of the victim and witnesses and could never, ever let his own prejudices influence his judgment. Dave, however, made all possible mistakes. He did not listen to either Martin’s or Steve’s version, but drew conclusions from other cases he knew about. He behaved unreliable.
Haven’t Dave judged Steve too hastily?
Looking at Martin, it was hard not to fall under his spell. Dave hadn’t seen him otherwise as a friend, but if Paxton had experimented a little years ago, perhaps the company of a cute younger mechanic had awakened his dormant tendencies? Is it then fair to say that it was Steve who seduced Martin, or that Martin seduced Steve? How exactly did it start? At what point? Who took the first step? Were their actions conscious and deliberate or was it more of an accident, instinct, or the influence of the moment? And even if these actions were deliberate, were they having bad intentions?
Probably no one really knew it, not even themselves.
"Are you sure Paxton didn’t hurt you?" Dave had to make sure.
"My heart beat only for him even before we touched the first time," said Martin with a smile. Suddenly he sighed and became sad. "Steve really isn’t what the media shows him. He is a very good person who does not allow others to get too close easily, which is why many cannot understand him. He is a man who runs to save others without thinking about himself. Like he once saved me when these gangsters came to our workshop. "
Right! Dave completely forgot about that incident! Totally! If Paxton really were a bad man to use Martin for his lascivious ends, would he be able to risk his life for him? Would he be putting himself in danger for someone who meant nothing to him? Since he had faced gangsters for Martin, Steve really must have had some filings for him, more than just lust.
Does that mean Dave was really wrong about Paxton?
"Will Steve really be okay?" He asked. At this point, he had no idea if his accusations against Paxton were right or wrong, but he calmed down enough to give him the credit of doubt.
Dave may have misinterpreted Steve and his relationship with Martin, but may not have done so. It was too early to pass an acquittal, but he should also refrain from the convict. After all, a man becomes guilty only when he has been proven guilty. During the proceedings, the prosecutor should remain objective and open-minded so as not to accidentally accuse the wrong person. Dave was ashamed to admit to himself that for purely personal reasons he had ignored this sacred principle.
"Doctors say yes," Martin assured, but his voice did not sound very confident.
"Sorry," Dave sighed. "I reacted too sharply."
"It’s okay," assured Martin. "Surely you had your reasons."
"Yes, but ..." Dave glanced at Sid, who was watching him closely at that moment, eagerly waiting for Dave’s further words.
Dave took a deep breath and announced.
"I hate gays. So far, I haven’t met anyone who is a normal, good person, " he admitted. "But you, Martin ... You’re not bad. You are the first good gay I’ve ever met. "
"Steve is good too," Martin assured, and blushed to his ears. "You just haven’t had a chance to get to know him better yet."
Dave gritted his teeth. He kept telling himself that he should be objective, that he shouldn’t judge anyone, but still Martin’s blush made him reluctant. How is it possible for a decent guy like Martin to feel something about the other guy? Dave just didn’t get it, but he didn’t really want to either. He didn’t want to believe that something as gross as sex between two guys could be enjoyable for someone like Martin.
It really wasn’t easy for Dave. His convictions, his hatred, did not arise in one day and did not arise unfounded. How could he get rid of them in an instant? Besides, he didn’t want to do it. As much as he liked Martin, he even tried to open up to his love for Paxton, but it just wasn’t right. A healthy man cannot desire another man! No, no and once again no! And since Martin was a kind and gentle man, not a degenerate, someone had to lead him astray, and that someone had to be Paxton.
This brought Dave back to the thought that Martin was Steve’s innocent, seduced victim. Only Paxton was no longer a degenerate in his eyes. So who was he exactly?
Dave was sure he wouldn’t figure it out as quickly as he wanted. Perhaps Steve himself was an innocent victim at one time in the past? Or was he born like that? But he slept with women, which meant he wasn’t gay. Unless he didn’t accept his inclinations himself or didn’t know he had them.
It was all too complicated for Dave!
Martin, however, gave the impression that he understood Dave and did not want to convince him or impose anything on him. Martin smiled at them as they repaired this beautiful old convertible together, but that smile grew pale and sadder. Similarly, his eyes grew sadder.
Martin really worried about Steve and it showed. He really gave him his heart.
But it was so much wrong!
Maybe Dave didn’t know Martin very long, but he liked and respected him. He wanted happiness for him, and in Dave’s eyes happiness was a loving family like his. Maybe they didn’t have a lot of money, maybe Dave had to help support the family instead of studying to become a prosecutor, but the boy didn’t see it as a sacrifice because it was worth it. The smile of his younger siblings when he bought them for their birthday or Christmas this one dream gift was something invaluable for him. Someday Dave will have a family of his own, and they may not be rich, but their lives will certainly be full of love.
And what kind of love can Martin have when he has a relationship with a man? He will never see his children and grandchildren grow. He would never feel their love or pride in having such wonderful offspring. Without these experiences, will Martin really be happy?
Plus, Sid chose Martin and Steve’s side! If this goes on, the boy will start to have some strange idea that being gay is beautiful and instead of living like a normal human, he will start experimenting and change ...
No! The hell no!
Sid grew up without a mother and his father was more a beast than a father, so no one looked after him. The school never did him any good, because there were no good schools in their district, such as you see on TV, where teachers care about the student’s well-being. Sid got out of his father’s hand, but Teddy, who had appeared to be a good man until then, was on Martin and Steve’s side. If this goes on, poor Sid will no longer be able to tell what is normal from what is not.
Maybe when Sid finds out what gays really are, he will stop being fascinated with them and start thinking as a normal person?
Maybe when Dave tells him the truth, Sid will find out that his vision of a good gay is a lie?
