Chapter 37: Chapter 37 Setting a Trap for Her to Fall Into_1
Rachel Bailey could never have imagined that the bizarre situation she encountered was the behavior of Glades Horne, the eldest son of the Horne Family, doting on his wife just an hour ago.
As a friend, she had tasted the "consequences" of making connections with the powerful.
The streets were filled with a surge of vehicles. Because it was already afternoon, the sun had lost some of its sting. Don’t think that it wouldn’t be hot in autumn; autumn tigers can be just as fierce. The number of pedestrians on the sidewalks was gradually increasing.
Among the traffic with various car logos, Julia Bluen’s Twitter car was like a small sparrow among a flock of large birds, extremely inconspicuous.
The Twitter car was heading towards Golden Kirin Garden.
Inside the car, Julia Bluen held a bag of kumquat cakes bought from the Shopping Mall, but the bag was tightly sealed, and from the outside, one couldn’t tell at all what was inside.
Julia Bluen had not expected that the old lady’s favorite treat would be traditional kumquat cakes.
But it made sense for elderly people to enjoy such snacks.
Glades Horne sat in the driver’s seat, hands on the steering wheel, eyes fixed ahead as he drove quietly. Only when they entered Golden Kirin Garden did he finally explain to Julia Bluen, in a very deep tone, why the old lady’s most desired treat was kumquat cakes. These cakes cost just a little over ten yuan per half-kilogram. This surprised Julia Bluen; she had thought he didn’t plan to explain the reason at all.
His grandmother’s family was not wealthy during her childhood. Her father had just started his business then, and funds were often tight, leaving no extra money for premium snacks for the children. Later, when he found the time, he learned how to make kumquat cakes and made them himself as treats for his children. The old lady grew up eating these kumquat cakes, filled with her father’s love. Even today, surrounded by great wealth and a large family, she still couldn’t forget them.
"So that’s how it is," Julia Bluen said, realization dawning on her. It’s often said that the older people get, the more they reminisce about the past, and Grandmother is a prime example. Now, even if she were offered all the delicacies in the world, they would taste flavorless to her. Only those treats, filled with memories and a father’s love as vast as a mountain, can still stir her appetite. "But why doesn’t Grandmother let others know?"
Glades Horne turned his head and looked deeply at Julia Bluen. His gaze was so profound that it made Julia sit up straight unconsciously, as if there was a big sign stuck on her face or her clothes were on inside out. She checked herself from head to toe and found nothing amiss. When she looked up again, those deep eyes were still fixed on her. She couldn’t help but ask, "Is there something wrong with me?"
After knowing him for decades, what she dreaded the most were Glades Horne’s eyes—unfathomable as abysses, capable of capturing one’s soul, and with a mesmerizing allure, akin to that of a predatory hawk.
His lips moved slightly, and only after quite a while did Glades Horne speak in a low voice, "Given our family’s current status, what do you think others would say if they knew Grandmother loves eating kumquat cakes?"
At his words, Julia Bluen opened her mouth. She wanted to say something, but after thinking it over, she decided it was best to remain silent.
People, once they become wealthy, unconsciously elevate their own status and start to consider cheap things as lowly, as garbage. She could understand and relate to this.
Glades Horne fell silent too.
Turning her head to look at the man beside her, Julia Bluen gently scooted closer, extending a comforting hand to cover one of Glades Horne’s hands that was gripping the steering wheel. The faint scent of lavender from her wafted towards Glades Horne. "Glades, I’ve eaten plenty of street food. Next time Grandmother wants some, I’ll buy it for her."
After gazing at her deeply once more, Glades Horne’s eyes suddenly curved as a faint, doting smile appeared. "Grandmother has a discerning eye. Her affection for you wasn’t in vain."
He had never told Julia Bluen, nor anyone else, that the old lady had, in fact, always hoped he would marry Julia.
"I always feel like there’s more to your words," Julia Bluen eyed Glades Horne, her apricot-shaped eyes becoming exceptionally sharp in an instant.
There were definitely secrets between Glades Horne and Grandmother, secrets related to her.
Glades Horne’s lips curved into a knowing smile, but he didn’t answer, focusing on driving.
The car quickly entered the Horne Family’s grand villa.
After returning from the Bluen Family, the masters of the Horne Family had quickly dispersed again. Even the distant relatives had all gone out. Only Adele Horne was still cooped up at home, locked in her own room, muttering something with Orlando Evans.
Under a large tree in the courtyard, the old lady lay on a recliner with her eyes closed, basking in the mellow afternoon sun. Mei Yi, the wife of the housekeeper Mr. Ying, stood not far behind her. An old servant of the Horne Family, Mei Yi was specifically responsible for taking care of the old lady.
Seeing Glades Horne and Julia Bluen get out of the car, Mei Yi immediately stepped forward. Bending slightly with a smile, she said, "Old Madam, the Young Master and Miss Julia have returned."
The old lady, who had been resting with her eyes closed, immediately sat up straight when she heard they had returned. Opening her eyes, she saw them walking towards her and laughed heartily, but still didn’t forget to turn her head and instruct Mei Yi, "From now on, don’t call her Miss Julia. Call her Young Master’s Wife."
Mei Yi hastily complied.
"Grandmother," Glades Horne and Julia Bluen approached the old lady, both extending their hands to help her up.
"Glades, did you manage to buy what I wanted?" asked the old lady, feigning ignorance.
"Your command, Grandmother. How could your grandson dare disobey?" Glades Horne replied with a rare touch of humor.
The old lady continued to laugh. Then, turning to Julia Bluen, she said, "Julia, just help me into the Main House. Glades, you can take that to my room." After sending Glades away, the old lady began walking towards the Main House, saying, "Julia, what am I to do? Grandmother is finding herself increasingly fond of your company. Look at this big family, so many people, yet none of them seem to care about this old woman. Sigh, it’s truly pitiful to be old."
Julia Bluen smiled, though her apricot eyes flickered with wariness. Grandmother is very sly, she thought. This grand display of self-pity must be part of some scheme. Outwardly, she responded tenderly, "Grandmother, I will make time to keep you company."
"I knew you were the best," the old lady said with an innocent smile, her eyes rolling shrewdly. As they ascended the steps to the Main House, she continued, "What do you think about couples living together or apart—which is better?"
At these words, Julia Bluen felt the hairs on her neck stand on end. Grandmother’s words have hidden meanings, she thought. She’s digging a trap for me to walk right into!
