Chapter 34: Chapter 34 Overbearing Side_1
"My feelings for my wife?"
Glades Horne raised an eyebrow, his deep-set eyes fixed on Benjamin Robinson’s coffin-like face as he said, "You actually found out?"
"How could I not know about your affairs?" If he didn’t know, would he still deserve to be called my best friend?
"But I only found out about it myself these past few days, and yet you already knew. Can I say you’re a fortune-teller?" Glades Horne was still astonished. He hadn’t even recognized his own feelings for Julia Bluen—how could this guy know?
Benjamin Robinson fell silent.
Seeing him quiet, and knowing he didn’t want to dwell on what he considered trivial matters, Glades Horne had to get back to the point, asking seriously, "Was there anything amiss with the case this morning?"
"The robber is an underling of Long, a local crime boss. He claimed he robbed Rachel Bailey on Long’s orders. Long, in turn, had arranged this after receiving a phone call from Dio Powell, the CEO of Cosmos Group. Moreover, we’ve investigated Rachel Bailey. She and Julia Bluen are friends and colleagues at Cosmos Group. It was Rachel who informed Julia Bluen about her secret boyfriend’s wedding—which you also attended, didn’t you? You exposed Julia’s identity as a wealthy young lady, causing both the Powell family and Nicholas Coldwell great concern about potential retaliation from you and the Bluen family. Consequently, after Julia resigned from the company today, Dio Powell immediately fired Rachel Bailey. He even told surrounding companies not to hire her, intentionally trying to blacklist Rachel from the accounting industry. Still not satisfied, he orchestrated this morning’s robbery."
Benjamin Robinson laid out everything the Police Station had discovered.
Glades Horne’s expression gradually tightened. The earlier amusement in his dark eyes slowly turned grave, and anger began to simmer in their depths.
Damn it!
Wait a second.
How did Benjamin know Julia had a secret boyfriend?
Is he that interested in Julia?
Glades Horne’s gaze fixed on Benjamin Robinson.
Setting down his glass, he stood up. His tall figure stooped slightly as he brought his face close to Benjamin’s. With long, forceful fingers, he rudely tilted Benjamin’s chin up, forcing him to meet his gaze. His eyes narrowed, a dangerous aura enveloping Benjamin as he asked accusingly, "Benjamin Robinson, how do you know Julia had a secret boyfriend? Are you that interested in her?"
Benjamin Robinson, his expression impassive, forcefully swatted Glades’s hand away. "I ran into them once on the street, but she didn’t see me," he replied irritably. He glowered at Glades, his irritation growing. "What kind of person do you think I am? Do I have the same taste as you? A girl you watched grow up—I wouldn’t dare lay a finger on her even if I had all the nerve in the world."
Satisfied with the response, Glades Horne reined in the dominance that had suddenly flared. Smiling again after hearing Benjamin’s words, he said, "What’s wrong with my taste? Are you daring to say my Julia isn’t good enough?"
Benjamin Robinson glanced at him, then suddenly chuckled softly.
Glades Horne also started laughing.
The two men tacitly agreed not to pursue the topic of relationships any further.
Some things were understood without needing to be said.
"Alright, I know what’s going on. I’ll handle it. You can go back to your work." Glades Horne already had a plan. Dio Powell hadn’t dared to target Julia Bluen directly, so he went after the innocent Rachel Bailey instead. Glades would make Dio Powell understand that no one was allowed to harm anyone connected to Julia!
Without saying more, Benjamin Robinson stood up and headed for the door. After a few steps, he suddenly stopped, turned to look at Glades Horne, and asked, "About the wedding, can I attend?"
He would be deeply regretful if he couldn’t attend his only best friend’s wedding.
Glades Horne also stood up, walked over to Benjamin, and clapped him heavily on the shoulder. "Sorry," he said apologetically, "the circumstances are special. I don’t want Julia to feel embarrassed." He had made it clear that aside from the close relatives of both families, no third parties were allowed at the wedding. Even though Benjamin was his best friend, he wouldn’t make an exception.
Benjamin Robinson smiled with understanding; he likely wouldn’t have had time to attend anyway.
"All those twists and turns, nearly marrying the wrong person, almost taking the wrong wife, yet you’ve finally found your happiness. I wish you all the best!" Benjamin’s words were laden with meaning, perfectly summarizing Glades Horne’s many years of complicated love life.
Without another word, Glades Horne stretched out his hand, and they high-fived. He then walked to the office door and opened it himself to see Benjamin out.
Only after Benjamin had left did Glades close the door and return to the sofa.
He picked up his glass with his left hand and took out his phone with his right, dialing a number. Thirty seconds later, the call was answered. His expression unchanged, his voice exceptionally cold, he said, "Ruiz, spread the word: whoever hires Rachel Bailey can negotiate business with Valence Group."
Rachel Bailey had lost her job because of Julia. He would, on Julia’s behalf, get Rachel a new job—a very secure one, a good job from which no one would dare to dismiss her lightly.
He didn’t need to explain further. With just that statement, those who knew how to read the signs would understand that Rachel Bailey had some connection to Valence Group.
"Understood," Ruiz’s steady voice came through the phone, without a single question about the reasons.
"Also, I want to see Jonathan Allen," Glades Horne’s tone turned even colder.
"When?"
"Now."
"Alright, I’ll have him notified," Ruiz responded and then fell silent, apparently waiting for further instructions.
Glades Horne ended the call.
He tossed his phone onto the coffee table and downed the wine in his glass in one gulp.
Leaning back forcefully, his muscular body sank into the sofa.
RING, RING, RING... His phone suddenly blared.
Sitting upright, he reached out and snatched up his phone. When he saw the caller ID read "Julia," his eyebrows lifted, and his expression softened immediately. His long fingers pressed the answer button. He deliberately lowered his voice, making it rich, magnetic, and pleasant—the kind that would make anyone listening feel utterly at ease. "Julia."
"Are you free now?" Julia Bluen skipped any greeting and asked bluntly.
"What’s up?"
"Grandma just called me. She said she’s craving something specific to eat, something only you know about. She wants me to go with you to buy it and then bring it back to her at home." Julia’s words held a hint of curiosity. What was it that Grandma Horne wanted most to eat, that only Glades Horne knew?
