Chapter 22: Chapter 22 What’s Going on (2)_1
What’s going on here? Julia Bluen was bewildered.
All the extended members of the Horne Family had gathered. The old lady herself had summoned them, with the sole purpose of getting Julia and Glades Horne into the bridal chamber sooner.
As soon as the old lady finished speaking, all eyes fell on Julia Bluen. There was confusion and shock, and amidst it all, some gazes held a hint of envy.
Glades Horne observed Julia’s astonished expression. His dark eyes were like two deep pools, unfathomable, making it impossible to guess his thoughts. He stepped forward before anyone else could ask questions. Taking Julia’s hand from the old lady, he pulled her up from the couch and said in a deep voice, "I’ll take her back." Then, he led Julia out of the house.
He acknowledged the old lady’s good intentions.
Their marriage had happened so suddenly that Julia was still struggling to adapt to the change from being his sister-in-law to his wife. He wouldn’t force her, nor would he embarrass her.
"Grandma, what’s going on? Isn’t our sister-in-law Ruby Bluen? When did it change to Julia?" Henry Horne, with his fair complexion and refined, handsome features, couldn’t help asking out of curiosity.
Only when the old lady spoke did everyone understand why they had all been summoned home. It was to hasten the bridal chamber ceremony for Glades and Julia. The old lady was indeed quite shrewd.
"I don’t know what happened. Ruby ran away from her wedding yesterday, and today Big Brother registered his marriage with Julia. They even got the marriage certificate. It was like a bomb went off, leaving us all reeling." James Horne, who had been silent until then, finally spoke in a low voice. His tone held a mix of jealousy and a touch of bitterness, so subtle it was almost unnoticeable unless one listened very closely.
Although James and Glades were half-brothers, they were strikingly similar: both tall, handsome, and objects of female pursuit wherever they went. Years ago, when Pheobe Rogers joined the Horne Family, Mila Anderson had demanded that Gian Horne hand over Valence Group to her own son. She forbade Pheobe’s children from any involvement in the family’s ancestral business. As a result, James had always pursued his own ventures. Perhaps a natural-born businessman, he had since become an important figure in the business world.
Younger sister marrying in the place of the elder? This thought crossed everyone’s minds. Yet, just as they were about to ask more questions, they saw the old lady’s expression grow stern and swallowed their inquiries.
Glades Horne took Julia Bluen and left the Horne residence. He drove her back to the Bluen Family’s home.
The car stopped in front of the Bluen Family’s mansion. As Julia reached to open the car door, she turned to Glades and asked, "Won’t you come in for a bit? My family isn’t as complicated as yours."
Glades leaned in, his handsome face close to Julia’s. His gaze was intense as he looked at her beautiful oval face. His lips parted, and his magnetic voice reached Julia’s ears, "Scared?"
The Horne family relationships were indeed complex; it was a large family, after all.
"Do you think I’d be scared? It’s not like this is the first time I’ve known about your family’s complexities." Julia’s apricot-shaped eyes sparkled with confidence, enhancing her beauty. Even Glades, accustomed to her loveliness, felt his deep eyes flicker.
Affectionately, he lifted his hand to tousle her short hair. His voice, tender and indulgent, saw her out of the car, "Go on inside. Get some rest early."
"Be careful driving."
Julia Bluen got out of the car. Closing the door, she bent slightly to look at Glades Horne through the window. With a faint smile, she added her usual reminder.
It was an ordinary phrase. They had often said such things to each other in the past. But today, both of them found that when they spoke the same words, there was an added warmth—a warmth born from the mutual care between husband and wife.
Glades Horne gestured for Julia to go inside. He wanted to see her enter the mansion before he left, to ensure she was safe.
Julia waved at him, then headed into her home.
Not until her tall, lovely figure disappeared inside did Glades Horne allow himself a soft laugh. His deep eyes flashed with an unusually gentle light.
Only when he saw the light turn on in Julia’s second-floor room did Glades Horne start the engine and drive away from the Bluen family mansion.
After briefly explaining her sudden marriage to Glades Horne to her parents, Julia returned to her room. She sat on the large, soft bed, gazing out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the dark night sky.
It all happened so suddenly, so quickly, Julia felt a little dazed. It’s like I’m on a cloud ladder, lost in a haze, almost like a dream.
Taking a deep breath, she rose from the bed and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, gently pulling it half open. Seeing that the prestigious Rolls-Royce was no longer outside the mansion, she pursed her red lips.
Even if it feels like a dream, it isn’t. It’s real, she knew.
From now on, she would have to accept this marriage, her new reality.
Only...
Nicholas Coldwell.ŸŸŸ His name flickered through her mind.
Then, she forcefully cast it out. She remembered something else: she was still a financial accountant at Cosmos Group. Tomorrow, she had to resign. It wasn’t because she still harbored fantasies about Nicholas, but because she didn’t want to see such shameless people and sully her own eyes.
「The next day.」
Just after seven-thirty in the morning, it was the peak of rush hour for the working crowd.
Buses to and fro were packed with people rushing to work.
Julia Bluen sat on the No. 5 bus heading towards Cosmos Group. Leaning against the window, she quietly watched the street scene outside, her expression calm. Unaware that Glades Horne had revealed her identity, she was squeezing onto the bus as usual.
Today, she wasn’t dressed in her usual white-collar attire from Cosmos Group. Instead, she wore an orange long-sleeved shirt with a black coat over it. The coat, unbuttoned, was long and covered her shapely hips. An orange belt cinched her waist, tucking the long-sleeved shirt into a black knee-length skirt. A pair of black sheer stockings covered the fair skin exposed below her skirt, and she wore matching black high heels. As she was naturally tall and slim, the heels weren’t very high.
Dressed this way, she looked distinguished, poised, and coolly elegant.
From the moment she boarded the bus, the men on board were noticeably drawn to her beauty and grace. They felt she wasn’t a mere mortal, but rather a heavenly fairy, ethereal and untouched by worldly concerns.
