Chapter 825 - 340: The Mother-in-law's Change of Heart
Pan Min asked Su Qing and Li Yan to apologize, saying Su Qing had scared Li Yan.
Su Qing, however, showed no kindness towards Li Yan, feeling that this middle-aged man was harassing her mother.
Li Yan, on the other hand, repeatedly said it was fine, it was fine.
"Your daughter's probably just a novice driver, still learning." Li Yan said, glancing again at the small Mercedes-Benz and wondering internally, how could Pan Min's family afford a Benz when their financial situation didn't seem all that great?
At that moment, Zhou Yuwen stepped out from the front passenger seat, but Li Yan didn't bother thinking about Zhou Yuwen's identity.
Su Qing grabbed Pan Min and said to her, "Let's go eat first, Mom."
Pan Min didn't want to have more interaction with Li Yan either, so she said, "Principal Li, we'll be leaving now."
"Ah, hang on, don't rush." Li Yan stopped them, adamantly trying to push two boxes of sausages toward them, saying no one at his house would eat them, so they should take them instead.
Pan Min kept insisting she didn't want them.
Li Yan, smiling all the while, said, "If you don't eat them, let the kids eat."
"Right, Susu?"
"When I have time, I'll treat you all to a meal."
"New Year's is quiet for you two as well, I'm alone too, we could gather around one table."
Li Yan blocked the path in front of Pan Min and Su Qing as he spoke, completely ignoring Zhou Yuwen.
Zhou Yuwen walked up from behind and patted Li Yan on the shoulder.
"Principal Li, long time no see."
"?" Li Yan turned around and stared at Zhou Yuwen for a long time, unable to recognize him.
Judging by Zhou Yuwen's age, he guessed Zhou Yuwen might be a former student. Adjusting his glasses, he asked, "And you are?"
Zhou Yuwen smiled and replied, "You don't remember me? Back when you and Principal Zhang visited my house, I even served tea for you."
"Principal Zhang" referred to the headmaster of the school.
It was a matter from years ago—some coincidental business led them to visit Zhou Yuwen's house to meet Zhou Guobin.
"Visit your house?"
Frowning, Li Yan thought for a long time but couldn't recall who Zhou Yuwen was.
Zhou Yuwen maintained his courtesy and said, "My father is Zhou Guobin, from the Procurator's Office."
Hearing this, Li Yan suddenly seemed to remember something. He gave a surprised "Oh!" and quickly clasped Zhou Yuwen's hand: "Ah, Director Zhou's son? You've grown so tall! I remember back then you were—"
Li Yan made a vague motion with his hand to indicate Zhou Yuwen's height.
In fact, he had completely forgotten about Zhou Yuwen, only vaguely recalling that a child had served tea in the study once. Zhou Guobin casually mentioned his son, and they had chuckled, asking Zhou Yuwen about his school.
Not remembering was one thing.
But Zhou Guobin's status was undeniable.
With Zhou Yuwen actively greeting him, Li Yan couldn't afford not to play along with pleasantries; otherwise, his years of social dealings would be wasted.
"You were in middle school back then, as I recall."
"Yes, time flies. I'm in university now." Zhou Yuwen replied.
"What are you doing now?" Li Yan intended to ask why Zhou Yuwen was here.
Zhou Yuwen smiled, pointing at Su Qing: "I came with my girlfriend to pick up Aunt Pan."
Li Yan immediately caught on after hearing this: "Oh, oh, Susu's your girlfriend? Wonderful."
"Great, really great. Teacher Pan, your daughter is lucky to have such an outstanding young man." Li Yan mulled over this for a while before commenting to Pan Min.
Pan Min didn't respond.
Li Yan suddenly realized the small Mercedes-Benz belonged to Zhou Yuwen?
The Procurator's Office families really did have money.
Benz, no less.
Li Yan wanted to flatter a bit more, so he asked, "Looks like this car's brand new?"
"Yes, it's new. Like it?"
Before Li Yan could nod affirmatively.
Zhou Yuwen said directly, "I gave it to Su Qing."
"You gave it to Su Qing?" Having grown used to small-town life, Li Yan was nearly stunned by this revelation. They had been dating for how long, and he was already giving her a car? Didn't that mean their relationship was practically settled?
In other words, Pan Min would soon become affiliated with the Procurator's Office?
Still, Li Yan couldn't help but be shocked—wasn't Zhou Yuwen being a bit too flashy despite his father being the deputy chief?
Smiling at Li Yan, Zhou Yuwen casually remarked, "I heard Principal Li mention earlier about inviting my mother-in-law's family over for a meal during New Year?"
"Well, that works out since our family plans the same. Why not let Principal Li join us?"
"No, no, Young Master Zhou is joking." Li Yan quickly waved his hands to dispel the matter. Bullying widowed mothers was one thing he could do behind closed doors with a thick skin, but openly involving people of status would make him a laughingstock.
"Well, then, I just remembered I've got some school matters to attend to—I'll head back now, you all carry on. Teacher Pan, take care! I'm leaving!"
After finishing, Li Yan waved and hurriedly disappeared back into the school, almost fleeing.
Watching this, Su Qing couldn't help but burst out laughing.
Pan Min, however, glared at her.
Pan Min was still upset about what happened yesterday, but she tried to retain her poise. She turned to Zhou Yuwen and said, "Xiao Zhou, thank you for today."
Zhou Yuwen replied with a light smile, "It was nothing, Aunt Pan."
"This is just something I should do."
"Exactly, Mom. Why are you thanking him? He's practically family." Su Qing playfully rested her chin on Pan Min's shoulder as she spoke.
Pan Min glared at her and said, "How bold of you to laugh."
"I haven't even addressed you yet—this car belongs to Yuwen?"
Pan Min had noticed the car earlier when Zhou Yuwen mentioned giving it to Su Qing. It looked brand new, with temporary plates.
Most likely just bought.
Pan Min certainly wouldn't believe Zhou Yuwen had really given the car to Su Qing.
She was actually annoyed because Su Qing's driving earlier had been reckless.
Careless and messy.
"This is someone else's car, and it's brand new. If you dent or scratch it, can you afford to fix it?" Pan Min lectured Su Qing with a stern face, half as admonishment and half as a reminder.
